"Authorized by Hanban, HSK Standard Course is developed under the joint efforts of Beijing Language and Culture University Press and Chinese Testing International (CTI). With HSK test papers as its primary source, HSK Standard Course is characterized by a humorous style, familiar topics and a scientific course design. Matching the HSK test in all aspects, from the content, form to the levels, it is a series of new-type course books embodying the idea of ""combining testing and teaching, and promoting learning and teaching by testing"". It is suitable for the Confucius Institutes in different countries as well as other Chinese teaching institutions and self-taught learners.
The whole series is divided into six levels matching the HSK test, with one volume for each of Levels 1-3 and two volumes for each of Levels 4-6, totaling nine volumes. With a textbook, a workbook and a teacher's book in each volume, there are altogether 27 books. This is Textbook 1, which includes 15 lessons and covers 150 words and 45 language points required by the HSK Level 1 test. Upon finishing this book, students will be able to ""understand and use a few simple Chinese words and sentences to meet their specific needs in communication and to prepare themselves for further learning"".
The book is illustrated with photos match the style of the test and is printed in full color. An audio CD comes with the book.

This book is designed to aid in passing the HSK 1 exam. HSK is Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi which is an exam for non-native speakers of Chinese outside of mainland China. The exam can be taken anywhere and is governed by the Ministry of Education of the Peoples' Republic of China. There are 6 levels of examination to test for proficiency. There is vocabulary (words and characters), listening, reading, and writing. HSK 1 requires the memorization of 150 words/174 characters, 20 listening questions in a 15-minute period, 20 reading in a 17-minute period, but no writing at this level.



This book is a detailed immersion-style with 15 lessons. The book is written in Chinese/English with transliterated pinyin and the accompanying audio. The lessons have tones, stroke order, radicals, and you develop the language relatively quickly. It starts with greetings and basic grammar to more complicated sentences and grammar (adverbs, modifiers, pronunciation rules, etc.). I would like to take the HSK 1 exam sometime next year just for fun. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to further their Chinese language skills and/or for passing that exam. Thanks!

Language learning milestone, yay!

This is one of the better, and more up to date Mandarin Chinese textbooks. Each one of the 15 chapters is built up similarly with the same types of exercises. It does engage more language skills than NPCR, but not all. There is no listening comprehension and not enough production tasks. There's also some mistakes in the English translation of some sentences.

I’ve been working on this book off and on for a while but this past month I really applied myself and finished it.

The textbook, which is what this is, takes you from the basics “what is in a syllable?” Hello and goodbye and so on, to more complex topics and concepts. And each chapter has a list of new vocabulary, new grammar and then some exercises to help everything stick.

This is the workbook that accompanies the HSK 1 textbook. It reinforces the concepts learned in each lesson and works on your listening, reading and writing skills. What I love most about it is that it takes the vocabulary you learned in the textbook and uses it in new situations which helps with reading and listening a lot.

Also the workbook has a mock HSK1 exam at the end which you can try.

**UPDATE** With a combination of self-studying from this book, and group lessons revising all 12 chapters I got 100% in the HSK 1 exam. Message if you want to talk about Mandarin!

I waded through this at the rate of just over 1 chapter a week with a teacher from CI.

The course is clear, and concise but gosh can it be a bit dry in places! If you're not up to speed with terms like "nominal predicate" or "adverbial modifier" then the grammar explanations are going to be a bit dense. Heck, even as someone who's comfortable studying languages I found the grammatical explanations sometimes needed a second read, along with careful note-taking.

I also used another website/ app to gain a little more fluency and confidence, and did some extra reading on the side (check my "chinese-learning" shelf if interested).

Fingers crossed that this will have been enough to pass the HSK 1 exam.

This was an okay book. This is really popular, and I heard from one friend that he used it with his Chinese teacher and spent 40 hours going over all of the information. I, however, spent only 5 hours, I think.

i finished studying this book last week, and the most challenging portions for me to understand were the sentence translations and the grammar that can be a little tricky at first, or maybe my brain is just slow… hopefully i can manage with HSK 2.
