"Would you leave everything behind to follow your heart blindly?""Crazy Free – An Epic Spiritual Journey is the true story of one woman’s sudden spiritual awakening - a solo traveler's adventure across the American wilderness, a sacred and powerful exploration of life itself." Once a successful geophysicist and conventional suburban wife, she leaves everything behind to craft a new way of seeing, of choosing, of BEING. Down the Rabbit Hole, she faces shadows, fears and addictions with a sharp scientist’s intellect, meets masters of magic and teachers of chaos, and learns – sometimes reluctantly - to trust her own heart. There are many paths to awakening the True Self. Ms. Wyld’s meanders through pristine wilderness and exotic lands, from the depth of desiccated Death Valley to the heights of the Pacific Crest trail – over 2,600 miles on foot, 400 miles by kayak, and 15,000 miles by road, with a side trip down the yogic path in the Indian Himalayas. At each step of the journey, she must surrender to the path of magic and unconventionality or shrink back to a world of debts, jobs and social expectations. A truly extraordinary journey. Praise for Crazy Free "Many of us dream of giving up comfort and security for absolute freedom but lack the courage or confidence to really give it a go. If your mind ever goes there, this book will strike you to the core. If not, it might just take you there." ~ Evan J. Larsell, world traveler and big-wall climber “Crazy Free is a sort of Eat Pray Love with dirt under the fingernails, an Into the Wild type of story where, thankfully, the heroine returns safe and sound from the wilderness, having learned, grown and transformed. [...]" ~ Christopher Loren, author of Unspirituality – Permission to be human “Melissa Wyld is an original, expressive, and provocative writer, honest, vulnerable, wide open, intellectually curious, with a huge spiritual hunger and a courage to seek it out of life.” ~ C.M. Evans, author of The Oak Park Taoist Primer "From the serendipitous way I found this book to the day I read the last page, I could not put this book down. It lived in my heart and spoke to my soul with every page, every story and every revelation. This book is a must read for anyone contemplating an adventure, a life course change or just in need of a little belief in magic, love, friendship and the powers of the universe." ~ Amazon Reader "A testament to human potential. A winding journey through the mountains and deserts of the heart. This little bit of literary sunshine brings hope to the weary and reminds us we're all human. Though our paths may vary they all lead home.” ~ Amazon Reader "I feel as though I have lived vicariously through her journey and have been inspired to create more adventures and be more open to receive what comes my way. I'm still reading the story but it's the best book I've read in...it may just be my new favorite!” ~ Amazon Reader "I absolutely love this book! It came into my life when I needed it, just like anything else we receive. The author spoke to my soul and added to the teachings I've been receiving from others who have crossed my path. When the pct came to an end, I cried. So touched by this book and look forward to reading the next. Thank you.” ~ Amazon Reader … more below.
Wow. What a journey. Like Melissa I found this book years ago and was not ready to hear what was to be said, but found myself in it’s presence once again and had to pick it up. I am truly inspired to follow the magic that life will present to me in one way or another and feel I am on my upwards spiral towards opening my spiritual realm. Thank you Melissa for inviting me to partake in this vivid story and for recharging the heart within
The book held my interest because the author did a good job of describing the people and the places. I found it difficult to believe that the author was willing to live so long without a job to provide her with an income for paying for a place to live, food to eat, gasoline, clothes, insurance, etc. Yet she survived and more than once quit her jobs to pursue her love of freedom and adventure. She must have been blessed with charisma because she had many friends who would allow her to camp out at their homes, use their showers, wash her clothes at their homes, and eat their food. Hers was not a lifestyle I would want for myself, but it did provide interesting material for the reader. There were quite a few errors not caught by her editor. Often, an "s" was missing, and a few times I found subject/verb disagreement.
Wholly inspirational. A bit droll at times, but the dynamic of this woman whose love for nature and curiosity in science leads her to finding her spirituality while writing her dissertation. Provoking the duality that what she has worked for, that be relationship and doctorate might not be where her heart aligns. Her curiosity brings her on quite a spiritual journey that has you inspired and questioning whether or not you’re living in your truth or not.
I’ve read this book twice and I plan on reading it again. I get something new out of it every time, and I’m reminded that finding what makes our soul and curiosity set on fire is what will shape how our lives unfold with fulfillment.
Thank you Bobcat for sharing this splendid journey with me- me as in yes we! We create the magic, it is our perception and therefore our truth. Live and safety on your journey. I've been following it on your blog. Peace
One of my favorite books!! Seriously epic spiritual journey. helped me through some difficult times where I felt lost and didn't know who god was to me anymore. Brilliant story!
Rarely have I been unable to finish a book. I really wanted to. But the rambling oddness just didn’t connect. I may try again at another point in my life.
This is kind of a hard book to review. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but sometimes did not understand it . The author went from a married woman with a loving husband and a good job, to a free spirited wanderer, going where her spirit tells her to go. I was fascinated to read of her adventures, from kayaking the Yukon river in a race, to walking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific crest trail or studying yoga in India, even attending a Vision Fast in Death Valley. She is always searching for her higher self, and relying on the universe to guide her and supply what is needed, and things do seem to present themselves to her quite often. She has ongoing talks with God or a higher spirit, which was fun to read about. . She is one who feels better sleeping in her truck out on the desert than living in the confines of a home and the same with relationships never really wanting be tied down. It is a fascinating look into the life of Melissa and her pursuits that we would all probably like to take some aspect of. I guess you will have to decide for yourselves, if she is just a free spirit, completely in tune with herself, a bit crazy or very imaginative, in a mid life crises, or maybe a combination of all. Whatever she is, it makes one think, want more and just to enjoy her adventure. I am looking forward to her next journey.
Although I never left my living room, 'the Bobcat' took me in step with her through each of her amazing adventures. Wyld is truly a free spirited soul on this journey called life, while making it nothing less than epic! Her storytelling is intense, yet taught me more about myself than I would have ever guessed. An inspiration to us believers in magic, as well as incredible proof to those with doubts. Thank you!
Epic is an understatement! From the moment with Jumping Mouse through each word, and page I was brought through the Journey with vividness. I could feel the black spots looking from above, and then to the last page and seeing again the frog as sight came back and with a new name Eagle. Thank you Bobcat, look forward to more!

Melissa's spiritual journey was packed with gems and I loved taking it with her. Her scientific background made her spiritual journey intriguing, challenging and delightful. It will make you think. Really enjoyed reading this.
This book is more about self awareness than hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. And this lady is aware, very aware, of self and indulges "self" in what she believes to be a quest for freedom and spirituality. There are better hiking-the-trail books.
