This second book gave this story a conclusion that just fit. I'm not sure how better to describe it, but everything that happened, although not completely realistic, seemed real enough for the book. If that makes any sense.

I don't really want to rehash the plot but I did want to share my feelings/thoughts on the main characters.

Clove
What an odd character. She was at times strong and passionate, weak and whiny, fierce and loving, vulnerable and compassionate, etc. She was a hard character for me to love. I had definite like for her but honestly her inner monologues really tried my patience. She made some stupid decisions, such as aggravate people holding guns to her, or thinking she could outsmart or overpower anyone. It struck me as funny that every time she thought she had the upper hand, or thought she was pulling the wool over someone's eyes, they were two steps ahead of her. And the people who were "on to" her weren't scholars lol. However, her love and devotion for her husband and more than made up for her silliness.

Turner
Man oh man oh man. I felt so strongly for this character. There wasn't a damn thing about him that I didn't like. He was so devout, I was jealous. I felt so bad for what he had to go through, especially because he was ignorant to the truth of his circumstance his whole life and had to pay the consequences anyway. This poor man just wanted to love and be loved. Envious and spiteful people really do exist out there and this book was just an example of the crazy lengths some people will go to get what they want, particularly when they have the wrong things motivating them..

Trent
Is it weird that I had a hate/feel sorry for relationship for this man??? There were times that I felt validated in my negative feelings for this character. The many "evil" things he did and why he did them made me so freaking angry. What's crazy is that the author made it almost impossible not to feel compassion for him. His beginning, his torment and abuse at the hands of his father, the many ways he was manipulated, etc. were what made me feel so so so so so so so bad for him. I'm glad he didn't get off too easily and I'm thrilled that he made some reparations towards the damage he caused.

Tina
All I kept hoping for was the end that we were given for this character . The price she had to pay wasn't enough but anything less would have been an insult. She was a freaking monster and I only wish there was some explanation for her behaviour other than the obvious (narcissism). How a woman could have so much hate within her, especially for her own child, was just insane. But to be honest, between her and Trent, they made the book. Every scene with them was exciting. I loved that I never knew what was going to happen next or how they would turn things once again to their advantage.

Overall an incredible "Journey" of a book and I would be interested in reading more from this author.

Enjoy! xo

5 SATISFYING STARS

This read was excellent. This is basically my recap of book #1 being not much more could be said without blowing it. I'm not very big on mysteries and going into this I had no idea what to expect but the synopsis got me. There was not one dull moment and it shocked me at almost every turn. This author wastes no time at all, taking off right away, which I was so delighted! It's frustrating when they take off so slow, I can say though, it hasn't happened to me a lot.

The minute Clove's husband Turner steps off that plane, her world gets turned upside down! Clove is going to have to do some things that may have you asking yourself could you do this? My answer is...

There are numerous characters in this story that will have you wondering who Clove can trust, even those that are the closest to her will be questioned. Abuse, betrayal, shock, angst, and a lot of lies...

I absolutely loved the main characters, (I will spoil if names are mentioned, associated with book #1) I will share with you husband and wife Turner and Clove.

This was a delight to read if I do say myself and happy that I had to guess what was going to happen next all the way to the very end!

Review by Jen Hagen

Wow…How about that ending to Contrite? I was beyond excited to find out there was going to be a sequel. I thought for certain I was going to have to live my life never knowing for certain if it was Trent or Turner whom Clove was talking to. Clove has given birth to a daughter, Journey, and the baby is 3 months old when the story begins. Clove has been held captive for over a year by Trent and a character I am purposely going to leave unidentified.

Trent’s not smart enough to do this on his own; that much I have figured out. His dad wasn’t, either. Every stick has two ends; Trent and his dad are on one end, and someone else is on the other. But who? Who in the hell would want to do this?

The “who” may be in question, but the “why” is known – for money. They are willing to rip apart a family all for the sake of money. Trent has additional reasons for keeping Clove – he has fallen in love with her. He feels like he knows the real Clove because of all the stalking he did prior to pulling off the scheme and because of the intimate moments they have shared while Clove was pretending. He is a loon, but yet I still felt a little sorry for him.

My own selfish reasons keep her here. I love her. I need her.

On the other side of the story we have those who have been looking for Clove with nothing to go on, but suddenly a lightbulb moment occurs and they know who the mastermind behind all of this is. Whoa Nelly!! That is something warped, I tell you. But back to me feeling sorry for Trent…I do. He doesn’t know what it was like to be loved growing up and he has never had anybody show him what love consists of. He’s always had to take care of himself and his father. Who has ever taken care of him?? I know I shouldn’t have any empathy for this monster knowing what he did to Clove in Contrite, but I am a sucker for the lost puppy.

I close my eyes as a foreign sensation washes over me. I wonder what it is, until it hits me. For the first time in my life, I am feeling what it truly is like to be loved.

Tell me you didn’t feeling a little something for Trent in those words. The first half of the book is riding the coattails of Contrite in which we never know whether Trent is serious, crazy or delusional. Whose side is he really working? The second half is more about forgiving and coming to terms with what one does in desperate times to prove how far love will take us into the darkness. Can Clove forgive herself for her betrayal to Turner or will she accept it as the means to an unknown but hopeful ending? Clove is a strong woman who wasn’t beat down by Trent and his conspirator, but when in the security of her family she realizes the truth of what she did and she struggles with it.

“You and my dad are both treating me as if I’m fragile and you’re afraid I’m going to break. But what the two of you fail to realize is, you cannot break something that is already broken.”

I loved Contrite. I rate hard and very few books earn 5 stars from me – Contrite earned that, but with Reprisal I feel like I am needing something more, but yet I cannot pinpoint what that more necessarily entails. More from Trent? More drama between Clove and Trent? Maybe that would have jolted me a little because as it is I didn’t feel a WOW factor or any type of exclamation. I do know that I have a couple questions lingering in my head which did not get answered and this frustrates me to the point where I become obsessed with finding the answers. I still remain a steadfast Contrite fan and am certain it will find its way on my top 2015 list, but the sequel just fell a little flat for me. I have truly enjoyed the crazy ride Ms. Coopmans took me on and I think this story will always remain with me.

This all started out as a game to me. A game in which I would have a life where I never had to worry about food, shelter, or how I was simply going to f#*cking survive from one day to the next. I never expected to fall in love with Clove. And yet I did. I didn’t lose that game. I won.

Contrite was fantastic, Trent was hot as hell and I loved him to pieces. I know I'm in the minority, but I did, I freaking loved Trent, evil and twisted as he was, he was hot and he loved Clove too. I really, REALLY wanted him to end up with Clove, and yeah, I know that's sick as hell, but that's what I wanted. But this story Reprisal, for me it was just meh. I really missed the steaming hot as hell sex in this one. Turner was kind of a puss in this story, so I could not connect with him at all. Clove was okay, but nothing exciting there at all. Clove's mother was a fucking bitch and I got sick as hell of her in a hurry, but like herpes, she just never went away. And the way things worked out for Trent in the end was very disappointing. I really had to push myself to finish this story because I ended up bored of the characters, and the story just drug on forever. I enjoyed the heck out of the first book, but for me, like so many others, this one got the "curse of the sequel". I will still check out this author's other books. The writing on this was tight, I just didn't like the story at all as much as the first.

Finally!! I get to finish the crazy twisted story of Clove, Turner and Trent. I have been waiting for this book since the minute I finished Contrite. I was elated to see it delivered to my Kindle for a review.

Here is what I love about Reprisal:
1. We find out who carried out this crazy plan and how deep it goes.
2. We see a lot of Clove's dad, and I really love him!!
3. Even with the huge cliffhanger in Contrite, we do see a HEA in Reprisal.
4. Lots of STEAMY HOTNESS!!

But my excitement quickly dwindled as I realized the twisted craziness I loved so much in Contrite was not going to follow in this second part of the story. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book! But I think I was expecting MORE dark and twisted. I think Kathy Coopmans gave us all such a great twist in Contrite that Reprisal felt flat. It was a great conclusion to the story, just not what I was expecting.

I look forward to reading more books by Kathy Coopmans in the future!

Your alone.
Isolated.
Locked in a room with no way out.
Your husband is gone.
Dead.
Every move you make in that tiny room is being seen.
You are being watched.
You are being held against your will.
There is no escape.

How do you hang on to hope, when hope is slowly slipping through your fingers?
How do you fight?
How do you stay strong?
How do you escape?
How do you hang on to faith and hope that you will one day return to your family?

This is Clove's story.

Being held against her will, Clove must fight for her existence. She must find strength to survive her captors. Not just for herself, but also for the one person that needs her the most.

Her name.

Journey.

But how will Clove break free from the evil that lurks behind those doors she is locked behind?
How will Clove escape the clutches of her two enemies?
Ultimately how will she break free?

Her plan.
To play the same game they are playing.
To manipulate.
To draw them in.
To finally be free.

But will Clove ever be free?

You will just have to read Reprisal to find out.

Reprisal.....What can we say?

This novel is nothing short of brilliant. We were captivated from the very beginning to the very end. We simply couldn't put it down. It's raw, edgy, confronting, dark, gritty, heartbreaking, breathtaking....So many emotions it will leave you wanting more and more.

It's a novel about hate and greed. It's about the lengths that people will go too for money. It's about strength and will. It's about survival. It's about hope and faith. It's about love.

To Kathy Coopmans....We cannot thank you enough for giving us a brilliant read in Reprisal. If we could give this novel more than 5 stars we definitely would. The emotions that you were able to evoke in us was nothing short of amazing. We absolutely loved it.

Guys, Reprisal is a MUST to be added on your TBR list. A novel definitely not to be missed.

A HUGE 5 star read.

Reprisal is book 2 in the Contrite Series.
You should read book one in order to read this book .. I say it is not a standalone. .
I gave this book 5 blow your mind stars!!!

Holy what the heck Batman?? This story is going to blow your mind. It leaves off a few months after the first book, and this book is anything but ordinary or BORING! I picked it up and could NOT put it down. There are so many twists and turns and total mind F**K's you will be spinning for days! I needed this book in my very everyday ordinary life! Kathy has ruined me for so many other authors!

This book is better then the first and I wasn't right for days after that one. This one is going to take me much longer to get over! Thank you Kathy for ANOTHER AMAZING story! "Not for the faint hearted"

This book was where the action kicked in. The first (contrite) was a build up for what was to come in book 2.
Wow was it worth the build up! some part in the book that you read and think .. I never seen that coming.
The book is full of surprises and very addictive

Contrite (first book) left me on the edge of my seat. As much as I wondered did that really happen I couldn't wait to find out how it was all gonna turn out. This sadly was too far fetched. It did a total 180, sorry but it didn't work for me. I couldn't wait to finish it, I skipped lots after I got the gist of the storyline :-(

✯✯5 Non-Stop Crazy Stars!!✯✯

Wow!!! When I finished Contrite I was left screaming no and my jaw was dropped. I was stalking Kathy Coopmans praying there was going to be a book 2. When I saw there was going to be I almost jumped through the roof. Reprisal was just as crazy and twisted as before. Just when I knew what was going to happen think again!!

We pick up a year after Trent shot Clove's husband Turner his twin brother. Since then Clove has tried to kill herself. She was drugged until she gave birth now her daughter who she called Journey is three months old. Clove doesn't remember much from her pregnancy. Her and Journey are locked in a bedroom that is identical to the one her and Turner shared.

Clove spends her time locked in the room 24/7 with just her daughter. She knows Trent and his partner are watching her. But, she could care less. Clove just tries to figure out a way to get her and her daughter away safely.

Zack spends 24/7 trying to figure out where his sister and Trent went. His dad's health is starting to suffer from Clove's disappearance. Zack knows his sister is alive. He can feel it inside him. He will not sleep or move forward without finding her. Zack just needs a break in the case.

Trent is in love with Clove. He can't stand his partner. The partner I won't tell you who he or she might be. We learned in the beginning that they're after Turner's money. His partner is still trying to figure out how to get it. By any means necessary. Trent wishes day in and day out that Clove loved him that she was his and her daughter was his. He knows deep down that is not the case. But, Trent will not allow his partner to hurt Clove anymore then it already has.Trent has gotten himself into

I am not giving away much more. I will tell you there was so much emotion in this book. With everyone involved. Poor Clove. I don't know how she got through everything that happened to her. Kathy answered all my questions I had going into this book. I just wish we get at least one chapter inside Trent partner head. Why,that's all I want answered. Trent. He made me feel bad for him at times. He never had anybody to really give and show him real unconditional love. I want to say for me he redeemed himself a little at the end for me. But, it was still a little too late.I wish I'd be able to handle everything that Clove did. I def could not!! This is one of my top series.

Kathy Coopmans you have left me utterly gobsmacked!! Me and my blogging partner were up long into the night discussing this book! With every new twist and turn in the plot line it left us literally screaming at our kindles one minute and sobbing the next!
This is the continuation of Clove's story from book one Contrite and this is not a standalone book, let me tell you this story is a monster of a story!
Katelyn and I have been left utterly speechless by this one am I right?
KATELYN: Oh my gosh, yes! You know how words explain emotions and form sentences? Well when I finished it I couldn't even put two words together when writing the review. NOTHING I say or write does it justice.
ME: I couldn't agree more! Kathy started out as a blogger and I don't know what took her so long to become an author but man am I glad she did. She writes with her heart and soul, not only are you clinging to your heart sobbing like a baby in some parts, but in other parts of the book your heart is melting into a giant pile of goop.
KATELYN: I definitely cried in BOTH books, but especially in Reprisal. The emotions are so real and so raw that it hits your right in the gut. You can feel Coopmans passion in her writing, deep down to your core. It amazes me how real it felt. I actually yelled out loud at one point, because it's like you have to get it our of your system.
ME: I was totally in yell mode also at my kindle!! This book is full of so many twists and turns we don't want to give away any spoilers, does Clove find her light again? Well you better one click this little puppy to find out...Amazing job Kathy I cannot wait for more of your masterpieces!!

I will be the first to admit that I waited to read Contrite until I could read Reprisal. I personally am not a huge lover of cliffhangers. I love the darker mindset of these books that Kathy has given us. Reprisal MUST be read after Contrite or you will not be able to make heads or tails of the story.
Clove….what a strong woman. She has endured more than imaginable but was willing to sacrifice everything for her family. Now let’s clarify…not the twisted woman that called herself her mother or the brother-in-law who turned her life upside down. No those family members get what they deserve when all is said and done.
Trent, Tucker and Clove…this little triangle has more angles that I would have expected. Yes, I said Tucker but you will need to read Reprisal to know why. Trent, well he made me feel bad for him a few times but when all is said and done he is man enough to know that he stands no chance at capturing Clove’s heart and that all of his selfish deeds will not go unpunished.
This book was a little lighter than Contrite but still an amazing read. The story pulls you right back in and has you wondering when then next twist will come and just when you think you have it figured out the story shifts again taking you in another direction.
This book was a bit hard to review as I don’t want to give any of the story away. Grab your copies of Contrite and Reprisal and take the twisted roller coaster ride of Clove, Tucker and Trent. I will be waiting for the next book Kathy is working on.

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, murder, suspense, secrets, betrayal, pain, abuse and heartbreak.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
Contrite (Contrite, #1)

This is more of Cloves story. This book picks up a few months after the last book. She and now her baby are being held. She is in a prison that is now her home until they decide what to do with her. She is told she will die as soon as her baby is ready to be handed over. Her brother is frantic and still searching for her. Will he be able to find her before her daughter is taken and she is killed? What other secrets are lurking? Who is really behind everything? Will she ever get away and if she does what has this done to her family to have worried for her for over a year? Will she ever get back to her family?

I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.

Okay so when Contrite ended I will tell you I immediately went to Kathy and said What in the F. Like so many other readers I'm sure did the same thing. However because I absolutely love that women she made us wait and holy cow was it worth the wait. So Clove husband twin psycho has her but it's not just him and man when this story unfold it will be like. NO FLIPPING WAY!!!!! Zake, Clove's brother has been searching for her for a year and has come up with nothing. Not one thing to find her and he's about at his wits end. When an offhanded comment from their dad comes the secrets start unraveling and someone from their past is reveal. Clove is alive and trying to keep it that way, but she is having doubts she will ever leave alive. When push comes to shove and secrets are reveal who will be left standing? And how much blood will have been shed?

I absolutely loved Contrite and couldn't wait when this sequel came out. This sequel is a closer to end Contrite and how the starring couple was going to move on from the events from book 1. I honestly loved Contrite because it was dark and twisted. I've been veering towards loving dark f'ed up contemporary "romantic" novels ever since reading Romig's Consequences series. I felt like this sequel was lacking the darkness of the first book that I was drawn to. Still, I was interested in the characters and what would happen to them, though I couldn't care for Turner. He was mostly missing for book 1. Secretly, I wanted Trent to get a better redemption even though he didn't deserve it. That was the dark twist I was looking for but never found.

The first book in this series blew me away. It left my heart laying wide open. I will say that this one has closed up my open wound and has made my heart very happy!!

Clove has been put through the ringer. Everything has changed. But the one thing that hasn't changed is the love for Turner that keeps her going even if he's gone forever. The love of her family might be the only thing that helps save her.

Ahhhh these characters are written so well and the book had a great flow. I would say everyone needs to buy these two together so the panic attack doesn't last too long. Lol.

Big kudos to Kathy for writing a brilliant dark and twisted read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

One hell of an ending to Clover's story. She is being held captive she has lost her husband. She has one reason to live and that is Journey. This book holds even more twists and turns than book one and it just gets better and better. You think you know how it is going to end? You have no idea.

This is a must read and Kathy is an author to be on the lookout for. Cant wait to read even more books from her.

After being confused after finishing book 1, I just had to read book 2 to get the story. I am glad I did, because I preferred this book, so much more to the first. Clove and Turner have went through, and this book see's them being reunited after the chaos of book 1. I was glad to see this book turn out the way it did.

It's hard for me to rate this book. I liked it in parts and didn't in some parts. The parts I liked, I liked a lot and the ones I didn't were crucial for the story structure so I'll go with neutral 3 stars. Spoilers follow!!
This book kick starts where the epilogue of the first book ends. We learn about Clair's pregnancy and then there is a year back where Journey is born ( It is a very nice name) Clair is confinement to a house with Trent and the true mastermind behind the whole plan - Tina( Clay's mom). This revelation which is supposed to be a big shocker fell flat for me. It almost fell like the author did it just to pull the rug off our feet. Just for the sake of some twist and shock. I am really curious to know if right from the start this was planned or it was a decision that she took when she started with this book. James ( Turner's dad) was more of a monsterr than a villain and it seemed to right to kill him in the first book but that obviously left a void for a new villain and since Trent was already showing redeeming qualities, it didn't seem right to give him that Honor, so entered Clair's mom. She was never portrayed as evil in the first book- more like someone behind money, but in this book- she is eevn worse than James?! ( If that's even possible). So for me, her inclusion and intention didn't quite add up. This is my take on the story - but Tina"s character was too elastic and pure evil. I still don't get why she hates her daughter as much as she does. Is that even humany possible for a 'mother'?!
It started out with a promising story which actually had me biting my nails in anticipation but the way it progressed- though it was unpredictable it didn't live upto to the hype. Everything fell into place too smoothly for a HEA but there were so many questions left answered and loopholes that overall treatment despite any over dramatization fell flat and lacked luster. I wish there were more drama and suspense. Till the last page I was waiting for it, but nothing happened except what was supposed to? It really let me down in that aspect..leaving me so many what ifs..And also what happened to the great plans of Clair?! It wasn't mentioned what it was in the first place - except that she planned on using Turned. But despite that she acted pretty dumb, letting her emotions take over especially in times of danger.
What I did like - Clair. In this book she was someone I could emphatize with and root for. I liked her determination and will to fight.I also liked how after she is reduced, she takes her time to get over her trauma and how delicately those scenes are handled. I also liked chapters from Turner's POV. The author has tried hard to make us sympathize with him and I did, so that's why for me, the ending was satisfactory. I liked Journey's adding into the story and the whole family - especially TURNER. He is the best example for an ideal husband. I loved everything about him.
I also had a problem with the pacing- mainly because of the number of flashbacks. one or two would be enough but there were too many with her and Turner which didn't add much to the plot except show us just how idea a couple they used to ( that was pretty much established in the first book). So adding it just for the sake of sex scenes seemed unnecessary.
Overall - Not great but not bad either.

This is my review of the audio version of the book as posted on Audible:

Book 2 of the series is definitely better than book 1 and I'd give it 3.5 stars for the story, really.

I liked the criminal part a lot - it's full of suspense, undercurrent emotions and psychological games. There is an unexpected twist, when all the plotting and betrayal comes out into light and we find out who the real Manipulator was, and that's a great plus from me. The "romantic" part is still a bit repetitive, though luckily this time there aren't too many sex scenes... which is good, as the book and its plot are more conscise and logical now. I also liked the introduction of multiple points of view; letting Clove, Turner, Zach and Trent tell the story from their perspectives added dynamics to the pot.

Narration by Ms Hazen is as usual at least good, often very good and at points just excellent. She makes the characters really come to life and sound true, especially in their inner monologues parts.

When reviewing book one I confessed I would probably skip part 2 if I hadn't promised to review it - I'm glad I didn't as "Reprisal" really is much better than "Contrite".

All I can say is 'wow.' I couldn't believe it when I finished it - particularly as this story REPRISAL, CONTRITIE Book 2, follows up to CONTRITE Book 1. Kathy Coopmans gives us such a flair here - changing points of view, changing time lines. It's sexy, provocative, gut-wrenching, heart-stopping all at the same time. It was challenging to record brothers - so very different and yet as the story indicates, identical twins. I loved the way Coopmans takes us on this roller coaster ride of a thriller and keep us on the edge of our seats, really allowing us to consider "What if this were true? What if this really happened?"

Reprisal
: Kathy Coopmans

I have tried multiple times to listen to this book. I made it to the first hour and twenty minutes when the erotica began. The plot was interesting, but I couldn't get past the graphic sexual content. I am sure if the listener likes that genre they would enjoy the book. I'm not one of them.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Kelley Hazen always gives her best.

Reprisal picks up where Contrite (Book 1) left off and I advise listening to the previous book first. Without giving away anything, there are some major plot twists that I didn't see coming. The twisted drama finally ends for Clove in a very unexpected fashion. This was a very satisfying follow up and worth the listen. Kelley Hazen as narrator was terrific once again. I really enjoyed Reprisal: Contrite, Book 2 and would recommend it.
