Can the ending of one dream lead to the beginning of a new one?
Will Gartner made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he finally has his life together. Leaving his reckless teenage years behind, he’s recently graduated from college and is all set to move from Las Vegas to New York to start a prestigious new job. But when an unexpected guest shows up at his farewell party, all Will’s dreams are smashed to pieces. Suddenly, he’s taking a crash course in how to be a father to the five-year-old daughter he never knew existed.
Will changes direction and heads to Harmony Creek, Ohio, and the only person who’s ever really been there for him, his brother Chase. Chase saved Will in the past, but will he rescue him yet again? Some lessons—like fatherhood—can only be learned by doing. Is Will up to the challenge?
And where does Emma Metzger fit into Will’s suddenly upside-down world? Emma knows all about his troubled past and sees his hesitation to commit to his new daughter. How can she commit her heart to a man who doesn’t know what the word means?
Chase always told Will “Follow your heart. Always try to be a good man.” But will following his heart be enough for his daughter, and for Emma?

New Adult Romance/Coming of Age Romance April 2016
This was a sweet book. Will Gatner has made a few mistakes in his life, but it was nice watching him grow into a man and father. His relationship with his brother was heartwarming and I enjoyed watching their relationship. Will had a lot on his plate and a lot of decisions to make that all seemed to happen at once. But that's life. The world doesn't wait for us to be ready. The world just happens whether we're ready or not. I enjoyed watching Will make decisions and then question them immediately after because who hasn't done that? We're not always certain we're making the right choices. He certainly got some things wrong along the way. But when your heart is in the right place, things usually have a way of working out.
I would like to thank the author for an advanced copy. It was a privilege to read Will's story. And I look forward to reading more books by this talented lady.
This was a sweet single dad romance. I haven't read the prior books in this series, but didn't have any issues getting up to speed with all the characters.
Overall, I enjoyed The After of Us, but found Emma a little too forgiving and a bit like a door mat. It's hard to imagine that moments shared at a wedding when you're 15 would turn into a lasting love for her, especially considering how that encounter ended. I both loved and hated Will at times. I understand that it was critical to Will's journey to make the decisions that he did, but it was still hard to swallow his back and forth/hot and cold behavior. I would have liked more push and pull between Emma opening her heart to him versus Will pushing her away whenever things got too serious or real for him. It just felt like Emma was taking any scraps that he was willing to give. The message of following your heart and letting your dreams lead you, however, was a wonderful one and I loved that aspect of the story. It really brought the entire book full circle.
This is the first time I have listened to Lacey Gilleran perform. I thought she did a pretty good job with both the male and female voices, but probably would have preferred a male narrator for Will if possible. He just sounded too young and not masculine enough. There were a handful of times that it took me a second to figure out who was speaking. Lacey's performance as Emma, however, was wonderful. Overall, this was an enjoyable book/listen and I am interested in finding out more about Chase and Kay's history as well as more backstory on Will.
My first book of S.r Grey and I can say I loved it a lot. I really loved the flow, the character development. I loved how Will was conflicted and I felt connected to him a lot. He wasn't suddenly perfect and I liked that. Will still had doubts, his life was already planned and when Lily comes in his life he is torn between what he had wanted and now what he does now. As a third person,, I was shouting don't think that, don't do this But being nit the the party , it must be so hard for him to come to conclusion and adjust to his life. His character maturity really made me feel , I liked Emma and how determined she was to give Will a second chance irrespective of her past, her struggles. She was straight to the point and loved how she loved Will with all his flaws. She wasn't insecure and I liked that.
I will highly recommend this book to everyone who loves men with babies, a good love story.
A short and enjoyable read. Growing up has been a long and rough road for Will Gartner. When he receives a late night visit with a surprise in hand, things begin to take on a new perspective in his life. He doesn't have much choice but to take the plunge and grow up -- FAST!
DNF @ 36% Another freebie bites the dust… I usually give more time, but I can tell this isn’t a good fit for where I’m at right now. I have a feeling it will be a pretty sweet romance though- if you’re in that kind of mood.
This is a spinoff, I think maybe his brother was the other H… The book opens with Will graduating college, and having a party where his ex HS GF drops off his 5-yr-old that he never knew about. (safety- he has sex w/ girl at party if that bothers you, but before h is on the scene) Will is a work in progress, I’m guessing that he’s going to grow throughout the book, but starts out with a party-boy attitude.
After visiting his brother, he runs into Emma the one that got away, which is where I dropped out. My problem was that everything was too green. Like they’re too young at 22… for instance, Emma and Wil’s failed connection happened at 15 when he choked instead of kissing her… leaving her feeling rejected… that she’s still hung up on???? Who hasn’t had an awkward early teen boy experience?? It also felt off that he knocked up the ex the drug addict at 15-16 yrs old. Even the 5 yr-old talks like she’s three.
First of all, don't worry, if you haven't read the previous ones :) the first three books in this series are actually about Chase, Will's older brother :) this one can be read as a standalone, and as a person who is totally new to this series and this author, I haven't felt like my reading experience was worse because I don't know Will's history... it's definitely mentioned here and there, but not knowing every little detail doesn't diminish your experience :) now let me tell you a bit more about this book :)
I'm gonna start with a little something about the main characters :) Will is fresh out of college, on his way to a fancy New York job :) that is until his ex shows up unexpectedly with a daughter he never knew he had... so he and his five-year-old pixie are heading to Harmony Creek where his brother and his family lives, to figure things out :) that is where he sees Emma again :) and I say again, cause they met about six or seven years ago on Chase's wedding :) I'm not sure if that scene was in previous books but it happened :) Emma is now working in kindergarten and there are still sparks between them :) both of them definitely have their own issues with commitment and abandonment but they work through it... although to be honest it really bugged me sometimes when Emma was pushing Will to make some decisions like "right now"... maybe it bothered me that much because I hate when people do that to me... I loathe being pressured into making rushed decisions and doing stuff because someone thinks I should... if I say that I need time it means I really need that time to figure stuff out... :) there were a few moments when I needed to remind myself that they are both very young, so maybe some angst and misscommunications between them were happening because of that... :)
Don't get me wrong, it was a good book :) it definitely started very promising for me, cause I liked the writing style and the fact that the book had two perspectives :) and you know how big of a fan I am of that :) but the more I got into the book the more I felt like the story was rushed... I wanted to know more about them and how they got together... so instead of reading something like "for the next few weeks they spent more and more time together" I would like to actually read about that time with more details... ;) and even though the actual story takes place over a few months of time, I had problems with getting attached to them as a couple, mainly because of the lack of details... this book is not very long and it unexpectedly ended on like 85% because there was also a sneak peak at another book at the end of it, so I was just reading and suddenly there was epilogue and the end... I am definitely curious about the history between Chase and his wife Kay, but it's not my top priority :) I want to blame the lenght of the book for most of my problems with it, but to be honest I read similarly short novels recently that I absolutely loved, so the number of pages is definitely not the problem ;) but be sure to remember, this is just my opinion :) you might read this book and fall in love with it ;) it might even be one of your all time faves :) you never know :) so if it interests or intrigues you, definitely give it a try :) like I said, it was a pretty good book :)
I was gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My favorite stories to read are always the ones where the hero's life is completely turned upside when he discovers he has a child....especially A GIRL! LOL! Mainly because you see the hero go through such a change, a metamorphosis, if you will, in terms of the life he once led to a life that now includes a small precious being that now depends on him. I love it! Will Gartner is no exception.
Will has finally graduated and is on his way to what he believes is his dream job in New York City but first he needs to blow off some steam by throwing a party. At the end of this party who shows up but an ex-girlfriend, who seems to be a full blown junkie now, with an adorable little girl, Lilly, Will's 5 year old daughter and proceeds to just hand her over to Will. Total upheaval for his well, laid-out plans.
Emma was the girl Will had a brief connection with back when they were teenagers. When she tries to make a move on him, he rejects her and they never see each other again...until now. Since Emma runs the daycare in town, Will needs her help. When they meet, they find their connection is still there and the chemistry is still very strong between them.
This is a very good, sweet story about sacrifice, commitment and overall the love that in the end makes every sacrifice worth it. Will learns to now change everything he knew about life, everything he thought he wanted, to take care of his daughter. I liked the way the story progressed and showed us Will's struggle to do the right thing.
Lilly just about broke my heart when we first meet her because you can tell she's been through a lot in her young life. I mean, it's 2 a.m. and her mother is dragging her around with her little pink suitcase and is ready to drop her off with this strange man she doesn't know who her mother tells her is her daddy. Wow! Poor child. I had to cry over her statement that "mommy leaves me with her friends". I had to cheer when Lilly finally got the stability and family she deserved.
I would recommend this book and I also have to get on the task of reading the other books in this series.
I am a huge fan of S.R. Grey. The writing style works with my style of reading, it flows. This book shortly followed ‘Southern Pleasure’ and I felt like it was single father week. To watch these men take responsibility and take care of their children is something that I love reading. Fathers do not get the recognition that they deserve and in most books it’s a single mother that meets a man willing to take on a family.
Will is trying to get out of his mother’s house and move on to the big time. He wants it all, big house, big money, and a new life away from Las Vegas. On the night of his goodbye to his friends, his on again off again girlfriend stops by with a 5 year old girl claiming he is the father.
It was funny to watch him have no experience with kids and trying to figure it out. This child in many ways was probably more mature than him at this stage. She has put up with a druggie for a mother, being left at people’s houses, and having to be quiet so she have a place to stay. He has no clue what she’s been through. He immediately thinks of his brother and his family to help him with his newly found daughter.
He has all these ideas of what life should be, but by the middle of the book he starts getting it. He starts seeing that family and his daughter are more important than any career with the top salary.
He is thrown back in contact with an old crush. Emma is a sweet woman, a teacher, and has such a caring heart. Although it is beaten up a little by Will who is still determined many times to get to the life he feels he deserves, she is patient with him. These two along with his daughter had me cracking up, had my heart pounding, and had me ready to throw Will out the window. R.S. as always has done a great job at showing real people, real issues, and giving us a happy ending.
The After Us is the promise of second chances and letting go of what you think is the right path.
Will had quite the crazy and reckless life growing up – all choices he made. He eventually grew up and chose to make something of himself. Prove everyone wrong that’s he more than just a loser.
Will is set to take off to New York and his new job. And he’s thrown the a huge curve ball. What he doesn’t expect is to be given a second chance at the one person he let walk away before. However, life can always throws obstacles in your way. Will he choose to pursue a dream he always had or follow the path that he started out on when he wanted to prove everyone wrong?
I love watching the relationship between Will and Emma blossom. They don’t ignore the chemistry between the two of them but they also know they need to get to know one another on a different level. And watching Will interact with his daughter – that is something you can’t fake. It’s awesome watching a father and his daughter bond together.
Ms. Grey wrote a beautiful story full of hope, love and happiness. It’s a sweet story that will leave you smiling and feeling happy. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I absolutely loved this book. S.R. Grey does not disappoint with this story . It is a spin off of the Judge Me Not series, but can be read as a standalone. This is the first time I have met Will. Will has just graduated from college and has landed a once in a lifetime job in NY city. He is out to prove to his family that his reckless ways as a kid and teenager are over and he can manage his life and career like an adult. Right before he leaves Vegas to travel for his new job, he gets a surprise visitor.. His ex-girlfriend, with his daughter. Needless to say this puts a dent in his plans. Now trying to decide what to do with a five year old, he decides to visit his brother in Ohio, to get advice. While there he meets up with Emma. Emma is a kind, loving and single small town girl. Will and Emma had a past in high school, but they never got together. Do they have a chance to be together now? Can Will make some choices for him and his daughter and will Emma be included in his plans ? Will now has to pick between his new career and his family. Can he choose the right path and find love in the process? Read this wonderful sexy story to find out!
Will Gartner has made a lot of mistakes in his past. Now that he has started to get his life on track he comes to find out there was one big mistake he didn't know about. That mistake turns out to be one of the best things he has ever done and gives his life a whole new meaning.
Absolutely fantastic! After seeing him struggle so much in the Judge Me Not series I was thrilled to be able to read Will's story. And although he isn't perfect by any means it was an absolute pleasure being able to see him grow into the man he always had the potential to be. I also loved the fact that we got to check in on the life of Will's brother Chase and his wife Kay. It was nice to see how their lives moved forward after their own story had ended. Though there were some big bumps in the road ultimately this was a sweet book that definitely pulled on the heartstrings and left me smiling by the end. I truly couldn't have asked for a better book to wrap up these characters lives and in my opinion The After of Us is Highly recommended.
Wow! I'm completely blown away. This book throws you some shocks and surprises. It was extremely good. I love how the story came together. Very easy read and once I started I simply couldn't stop reading until the last page. The characters are great you can really feel the emotions come off the pages and the chemistry is sizzling! I loved everything about this book but I do have to say Lily cracks me up and it's hard not to fall in love with her! I love that this author never disappoints. She always gives us amazing stories that stay with you long after the last page is read!
Will finds out he has a five year old daughter with his high school girlfriend, who battles drug addiction is not fit to be a mother.
So instead of flying to New York for his new job, Will leaves for Ohio to seek help from his older brother and to figure out this mess. Here he runs into Emma. She is an elementary teacher and also in charge of the small town's daycare. She and Will met 7 years ago at his brothers wedding. Back then they hadn't even as much as kissed, so it didn't actually feel like a second chance romance. They had a connection during that ONE time they met. They didn't have any history whatsoever.
I liked Will. He was just a 22 yo college graduate. He didn't know his daughter and had to figure out how to move forward. I felt like everyone was a little too hard on him and judged his (first) decision to still move to New York City too harshly. Give that guy a break. His whole world just got turned upside down.
One of the people who judged to harshly in my opinion was Emma. She had abandonement issues since her father left when she was seven and projected her on own feelings on Will's relationship with Lily. Frankly, I thought she was a bit of a b**ch. When Lily had an accidant while being in her care, all she thought about was herself. I did not like her one bit and I usually have to connect with the heroine in the romance genre.
Being a sucker for single dads, I was drawn to this book immediately. Will Gartner has had a rough past. His relationship with his high school sweetheart was a drug infested party, and resulted in a surprise to Will several years later! With Lily now in his life, Will is forced to make some adult decisions. His first job since graduating college is waiting for him in New York City, but will this "new" bundle of joy fit into that new life? Visiting his brother Chase and trying to figure out life, he gets to see Emma Metzgar, a woman he met at Chase's wedding and had an instant connection with. Sparks fly, but is it enough to change his plans, especially now that he has Lily? Will's story of life, love and personal self growth is inspiring and gives all the feels. These characters are true to life and SR Grey has a way of writing their story that makes you feel like it is someone you know. She is able to portray the story is a way that is relatable. Take this journey with Will and Emma(and Lily, she is just so cute!) to growing up, realizing your true dreams and finding your happily ever after!
Lacey Gilleran's narration is beautiful. She has a very soothing voice, and is age appropriate for this new adult book. It's my first listen by her and I found her pace easy to listen to and her voices easily distinguishable.
This book is going to have you feeling all sorts of ways! I started off feeling shocked and angry which lead to hopeful and sappy, then back to angry and finally love! I think the entire idea around this story was great and it wasn’t your typical book in this genre. I really loved the characters and the depth to them, the book was written in a way that made it seems like you were there. If you haven’t read or listened to this book yet, I suggest you get started. You don’t want to miss this one!
What a great story! I listened to the audio. Just a nice easy story to listen to and I did enjoy the narrator. Loved Will and Emma and of course Lily. Looking forward to going back to read Chase’s books. I didn’t read the blurb for this so I went in blind and was pleasantly surprised by the storyline. Figured I would dislike Will from the beginning but quickly changed my mind.
I am sorry that this series has come to an end. Although this book was centered on Will we still were able to follow Chase and Kay and their marriage. I loved the way that the characters changed and adapted with a fair amount of effort and not that easily. I will miss them all.
When I first started reading this book I was reluctant to go in with it.It started like so many party books,ho hum.But I decided to keep on and am I glad I did! The story is terrific, the characters bright, and an ending I needed. So if you’re looking for a great book with a five year old precocious little girl, look no further, this is for you.It even made me cry,in a good way,in several places.Try it,and I hope you’ll like it as much as I did.
Will Gartner is finally getting his life together. After making a ton of mistakes as a teenager with alcohol and drugs he pulled himself together, went to college and is now graduating and on the road to a better future. Just as he is about to move to NYC his past comes back to bite him in a way he never expected. Will has a five year-old daughter he never knew about and her mom is in no shape to care for her. Will is now the sole provider for Lily which is kind of comical since he barely knows how to care for himself. So on his way to NYC decides he's gonna stop in his hometown and beg his big brother to help him.
The After of Us by S.R. Grey is a truly amazing story about the choices we make and how they can affect the ones we love. It shows you just how quickly your well planned lives can be altered and that it doesn't have to be in a bad way. As long as you take control and decide on what's right for not only you, but your loved ones, the changes you make can turn you into a better person.
Will Gartner has graduated college and landed himself the job of a lifetime. He should feel unbelievably happy getting this job as a graphic designer in New York City, but something doesn't feel right. The pay is incredible, but his heart just isn't in it. If he gives this up, he may never get another chance and he needs to get his name out there. His dream is to make his comic into a graphic novel and keep moving from there.
Will decides to throw one last big bash at his mom's house before setting off to be someone he isn't quite sure he's meant to be. The party is huge and as he's locking up for the night, he gets an unexpected visitor. Cassie, the girl he once believed he loved, the one real girlfriend he has ever had, is standing in front of him, completely strung out. It seems although Will has left the drugs in his past, Cassie is worse than ever. He wants to help her, but that's not why she is there. She wants him to take Lily, the five year daughter he never knew existed.
Now, Will has a dilemma. What will he do in New York with a child? He needs help and there's only one person he trusts to help him with a problem like this. He decides to set off to his hometown of Harmony Creek, Ohio to dump his newfound daughter with his brother, Chase, sister-in-law, Kay, and their kids, Jack and Sarah. Chase doesn't know it, yet, but he will be taking care of Lily until Will can work out what's best for himself and his daughter.
The plan is a few weeks. Will will go to New York, get settled in an apartment and at his new job, set up daycare for Lily, and come back to collect his daughter in a few weeks. But first, he needs to set Lily up for daycare in Harmony Creek which is not as simple as it sounds. To do this, Will must come face to face with the teacher, Emma Metzger.
Emma is Will's old crush and they didn't exactly part on good terms the last time they saw each other. But damn, if the attraction isn't still just as strong between them as it was all those years ago! Emma agrees to take on Lily even though she disagrees with Will's actions.
Although, this seems like the best solution, Will is finding it more and more difficult to leave his daughter. She is smart, sweet, and has managed to tie Will around her little finger. It's also uncanny how much she is like him, with her artistic abilities. Especially with her drawing, which is impeccable for a five year old! Will decides to put his trip off for another week.
You will be surprised what can happen in as little as a week. Does Will decide to stay in Harmony Creek with his family and Emma, the girl he is falling for? Or will he carry out his original plans, knowing Lily will be in daycare for long hours? Is it better to take the job in New York and never have to worry that Lily is deprived of anything? Or could Will realize that money is nothing compared to his daughter having an active father figure in her life? I highly recommend you to read and discover the answers for yourself!
S.R. Grey had me experiencing so many different emotions while reading 'The After of Us' that I forced myself to stop from time to time. And believe me, it was difficult. It seemed nearly impossible to tear myself away from this book once I started because I was so anxious to see how it would end. It was unpredictable and I loved that most. I also loved how I caught myself yelling at Will on more than one occasion. I can honestly say that I've never actually talked to a character in a story until I met Will, but I adored him as much as I did all the others in the story. This author sure knows how to make her characters come alive in a book and I look forward to seeing what she does next.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Will Gartner has been a favorite of mine since I met him in his brother’s series. He’s always been a little trouble with a lot of soul. A lot of heart. And his book? It was so much more than I ever thought it could be.
“With you in my life, I’m finally the man I’ve always wanted to be.”
Will has finally defied the odds from his youthful (and troublesome) past. He has grown up and graduated college. His life is on a fast track to success with an amazing job opportunity in New York. He is literally hours from starting his life post- college when his past comes back and puts everything to a halt. A 5 year old daughter, he knew nothing about is left in his care. In true fashion what does Will do? He turns to his big brother, Chase. He learns that sometimes we are meant to be in the very places we try to run from.
“It’s true, Emma does save me. She grounds me, keeps me on course.”
Totally at a loss, Will decides to stay with Chase for awhile to figure out what exactly should be his next move. He is so drawn to his daughter, Lily, but he is truly at some crossroads on the path he should take. He has dreams. Big ones. And he knows abandoning the one person that depends on him is not an option. The struggle between pursing his dream and caring for his daughter becomes his biggest challenge yet. But when he meets Emma Metzger, he finds out that letting go can be the best thing that has ever happened to him.
“My love for Emma is deep. It’s something undeniable in my soul.”
Will and Emma met years ago, and there was a spark between them. Years later, the moment they see each other again, this spark has been set ablaze. You feel it coming off of the pages. Their past so unfinished, so many what ifs. Their reunion had my heart racing as you felt them both come alive in the presence of each other. They fell easily. Softly. Their love can only be described as a magical awakening. Neither of them realized just how much they were missing a part of their souls.
“You’re making me fall for you, Emma Metzger.” “Good. Because I’ve already fallen for you, Will Gartner.”
Lily is the breath of fresh air Will didn’t know he needed. She is his strength, his heart. His dreams. Even his fears. His love for his child is overwhelming. Endearing. He is a better person because of his love for Lily. He never knew he could love this deeply until her. And this is what made it so easy to fall for Emma. She knew the type of father he could be. She brought out the best in him. She showed him just how powerful love truky is. How love overcomes. It saves. In all things, choose love.
“Love makes us all desperate in one way or another. It’s an unavoidable consequence of placing your fragile heart in another’s hands.”
The writing was mesmerizing. I found it hard to put down as the author masterfully executed a story that keeps the reader engaged the entire time. The After Of Us is a thought provoking story about love always ending up where it belongs. Will thought his future was set. But a 5 year old who quickly became the love of his life changed everything. She shifted his world. And a woman who deeply loved him forever changed his heart. Emma taught Will that he should trust in love, and everything would fall in place. Never stop running from the very thing that is meant to save you. What an amazing spin off to this series. Will Gartner now owns a piece of my heart.

Thank you so much Give Me Books Promotions for sending me an ARC of this book! It was just the right form of hope and sweetness that i needed! :D
5 Heartwarming Stars!!
I have heard so many wonderful things about author S.R. Grey and i'm beyond thankful that i finally got the chance to read her work! Ms. Grey had me hooked from the very first page and i hated when the story ended so i'm for sure going to check out the Judge Me Not series! This story isn't just about someone trying to wrap their head around the uncertainties of life but it's about that person finding out the life they were meant and wanted to lead. No ones plans are ever set in stone because anything can change in the matter of seconds and this book proved that. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's definitely one of those feel good stories.
One quote that stuck with me comes from Will – “They say moments of clarity come at the strangest times, most often when unexpected.”
Will Gartner was a character that had just started living his life the right way when a surprising revelation arises and everything changes. He was a very kind, at times reckless, and strong character. He shocked me more times than not and made me proud a lot throughout the story. I wasn’t sure if he was going to just give up and run due to the drastic change in his life or if he was going to man up to be the father that his daughter needed. He was a talented artist and dreamed of making his own graphic novel. His relationship with Lily was something so beautiful. His relationship with Emma proved to be one that was worth it. Will has a claim on my heart and is officially a book boyfriend of mine.
Emma Metzger was a character that had a heart of gold and a guy on her mind for years. She was a teacher that ran a daycare and adored children which made me like her almost instantly. I wasn’t sure where she stood when i first came across her in the story and it thrilled me to see how she acted in later chapters. She wanted nothing but the best for Will and for him to be happy especially if that meant him following his own dreams. Emma was determined to help him figure out his life. I adored her relationship with Lily and the way she treated her. Her relationship with Will was special and she determined to be the other half that he deserved. The way she could relate to Lily was heart breaking but it showed how much that happiness and love meant to her.
I highly recommend The After of Us to anyone looking for a story that’s about how things in life don’t go according to plan but how the changes that are made to characters lives can make them the happiest they’ve ever been. I felt like this story was about two people finding their home in the love exchanged between each other. It was brilliant and just the read that i needed to leave me in a great mood for the rest of the day! If you haven’t already go and One-click this beautiful story! You won’t regret it!! :) 5 Stars all around!!
I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 Beautiful Stars!
The Review: S.R. Grey has a talent for pulling you right into the emotional struggles of her characters. You not a bystander just reading a book. The fluid writing, the connection with the characters, the intensity and “feels” you get from one of her books is such a heartwarming and a heartbreaking thing. You don’t read. You FEEL. It’s one of the many reasons I love her books. This one was no different. Beautiful, angsty and sweet.
Will Gartner is all grown up. Starting out with a shaky childhood and a questionable future, we meet Will as a brooding and conflicted teenager in the first books in this series. His big brother Chase, who I freaking LOVE, who didn’t want his younger brother following the same destructive path he had been on, helped to steered Will onto a solid path with a bright future. Years later, we see a mature, confident Will graduating college and preparing for a successful future at his dream job.
That all comes to a halt the moment his past connects with his present and he’s left with a young daughter he knew nothing about. Struggling to figure out what to do next, he goes back to his brother Chase, the one person he knows who can help him.
I loved watching Will form a hesitant but ultimately solid bond with his daughter. He’s scared and undecided at first but Lily’s is too innocent and adorable to ignore. It was captivating and sweet and though he had some very tough decisions to make, and he felt like he was on shaky ground once again, he was a solid character and become the hero his daughter needed him to be. The author writes their interactions with struggle but also with such warmth and strength, you can’t help but fall in love with everything about them.
And then there’s Emma, a pleasant surprise from years ago and one he never forgot about. Emma was a beautifully written heroine with her own shaky past. She knew herself and knew what she wanted but she was also afraid of getting hurt. Knowing that Will might not be around for long had her cautious but also because of her strength, she helped seal the bond between Lily and Will. Their push-pull was romantic and sexy and Will all grown up, could rival Chase in the hot-and-steamy department!
Watching them build a connection as a family was full of challenges but never wavered in its enchantment... just like the books before it. This series has never let me down. If I want a romantic read that will entertain and give me the angst I love, I know I can find it here. I’ve reread the first three books several times and this one is in that same reread pile.
As a side note, I love, LOVED getting more of Chase. I fell in love with him in the first book and seeing how far he’s come, how much passion he gets out of life and his family, how wise and wonderful he is as a husband and a father, made me giddy and warm all over. ;)
The after of us is a standalone novel in the Judge Me Not series and tells us Will's story, who is Chase's younger brother. It's set a few years down the track where Will is steering his life in a very positive direction and appears to have a bright future ahead of him. Until his ex girlfriend appears and turns his world upside-down and has him questioning all his decisions.
Will is a very likeable character. He's a self proclaimed 'prick' at times but it's easy to understand why as he's a very loving guy and cares deeply for those close to him. He has to deal with a life changing situation and I found that his reaction was quite realistic in terms of his maturity in this novel. The development of this character has been well written and the transition from a boy to a man even more so.
The secondary characters are some we already know in Chase and Kay along with some of the other townsfolk of Harmony Creek. It's nice to see how they've changed as well.
Emma is Will's love interest and she's a lovely character. She's a teacher and generally cares for the well being of others. The love and support she provides Will with is gorgeous and her emotional reactions to him and his moods/behavior are what you would expect someone to feel in reality.
Told via the dual points of view of Will and Emma, it gives the story depth and a great view of their emotional turmoil. I love the writing style of SR Grey and this book is no exception.
My only disappointment would be that I expected a little more drama from the ex girlfriend or her mother, but they were both less involved than I thought they'd be.
Overall, another fabulous read in this series and I recommend you pick up this series now.
4 stars.
Thank you to SR Grey for providing me with a copy of this book.
The After of Us is a standalone book in the Judge Me Not series. It read good as a standalone, however I would like to see what really went down with Chase and his wife Kay as well. This time around it is Will, Chase's brother and Emma's turn to shine.
Will Gartner is ready to start his life as a big boy. Sounds like he was quite the mess in the past, but has overcome his demons, graduated from a fine college and is now ready to join the rat race in New York. Will's train of thought is, the more money he makes the more successful and removed from his past he will be. His real passion is art, however that isn't going to make him the kind of money he thinks he needs right at this moment.
As Will is ready to leave, his past pulls up in a scummy cab and leaves his future at his feet in the name of a five year old girl. Now he needs to decide what to do with her and the job that is waiting for him in New York. Needing some advice, Will decides his brother Chase would be the most help. Too bad his home is Harmony Creek, a place Will really didn't want to return to yet.
Emma Metzger met Will Gartner when she was fifteen years old. A missed kiss is all she's got to remember him by. Now that he's back, better than ever, Emma wonders if there is any chance Will still has feelings for her. Little did Emma know, Will was coming back with some baggage and serious choices to make.
The story is cute, very well rounded and buttoned up at the end. Written from duals points of view, with an epilogue, there wasn't enough angst for me between Will and Emma. It sounds cynical, but I like my romance a little more troublesome and gritty, however for a sweet romance reader, this is the perfect book.
Admittedly, The After of Us is a different style than I'm used to from SR Grey but that doesn't mean I enjoyed it any less than her more suspenseful work. I also hadn't read the series that this book is a spin-off from but I don't feel like I missed anything. The plot here was very clear and easy to follow. And for me, it was nice to read a sweet book after all the angsty ones I've been reading lately.
Will thought he was ready to step into adulthood but he had no idea how quickly his well-laid plans would come crashing down around him in the form of a lonely little girl named Lily. Oh that girl stole my heart from the first moment I met her; and she stole Will's too though it took him a little longer to realize it. I loved that they shared a mutual talent and that they used it to strengthen their relationship. This new turn in the road led Will to his brother's doorstep and to Emma's classroom.
I was taken aback by Emma at first. She was equally sweet and sassy. Her goodness shone through as did her undeniable attraction to Will. The sparks between these two flew from the moment they met. I liked that she didn't back down and told Will exactly how she felt about his actions and how they were effecting Lily. I really enjoyed Will's progression for man-child to man. He learned how to put others wants and needs before his own and what unconditional love really was all about.
S.R. Grey gave me sexy, sweet and silly in one easy to read package that left me wanting more. The After of Us is a story about the detours life takes you on and how that side road you never intended drive is sometimes exactly where you're supposed to end up- just like Will and Lily. It is a story of how love can heal even the most fragile and sheltered heart, just like Emma's.
I must first point out that I did not read Chase's story before diving into this book...I will more than likely go back and read it though because this was a pretty great story. There wasn't a lot of outside drama in this book...there was drama but it was self caused by Will upon himself most of the time. This book was more about Will finding himself and learning to let go, it may have taken him awhile but he did find himself. Lily in this is seriously just the cutest 5 year old ever...she's so much older than her age. She had to grow up really fast being with her mother and that is never a good thing but add on the druggies she was around and that is one of the most terrible ways for a little girl to grow up. I was happy that Cassie put on her big girl panties and gave Lily to Will, and even though he didn't know it at the time...having Lily thrust upon like she was is the best thing that could have happened to Will. She is nothing he envisioned or wanted at the time but everything he needed to wake up and realize he was missing things in his life. Emma I liked because she is a no nonsense type of girl...if she wanted to say something she would without regret of how blunt she was being.
I enjoyed this book a lot and I highly recommend this author as she is an amazing author.

I love a sweet read and this one sure hit the mark. I also adore a second chance romance!! This book had it all...love, loss, lusty goodness. Finding out who you really are is a crazy ride sometimes. For Will and Emma, finding the happily ever after wasn't just about them together. They needed to figure out how to grow a once upon a time crush into something more.
I wasn't so sure about Will's character when he was first introduced. He was hot headed and very self absorbed. When a little white blonde haired beauty is literally dropped on Will's doorstep, watching him transform from an "all about me" man to a family man was sweet to read. Taking his daughter to meet his brother's family is where the love affaire begins. Seeing is character grow paternally made him ultimately ready for his reintroduction to Emma. Watching their relationship thrive was a sweet and full of spark. Once those two got going, there really wasn't much that could stop them. She was as good for him as he was for her and their unity helped add so much stability for his daughter.
This book was an absolutely easy read for me. No terribly angst but rather just a great story. The writing was well done and flowed well. I appreciate a good second chance love story and this didn't disappoint. Well developed and completely recommended. 4.5 easy stars-FMR Book Grind
Will is a bachelor, living his life with very few cares. When a daughter is dumped literally in his lap, his whole world changes. As he struggles through learning fathering on the fly, he truly becomes an amazing man.
I found myself wishing there were more men like Will. More stand up dads who want to be a part of their kids lives. What a difference it made to Lily, and to Will and his family. Emma, who had always loved Will from high school even changed her thoughts about Will as he continually put Lily first.
This is a feel good story about a new dad finding his way. It shows how one small act can change your life for the better. It truly is an amazing, must read story.
Lacey Gilleran is a perfect narrator for this romance. Her soft, sweet voice really helped bring the characters to life. The different tones she used for each character enhanced the story. Lacey made the story become a movie in my mind, one that I could not stop until the end.
