The population pushes ten billion people. The future is bleak. Scientists have determined that if the population continues at its current rate of acceleration, global resources will be depleted in a generation. Earth’s sixth extinction does not include the human race. Something needs to be done. In an attempt to control and decrease population, a mutated form of the measles is released. As a precaution, an assurance plan is placed in motion. A sampling of mankind is hidden away in a protective bunker, placed in stasis where they will sleep through the entire event. They are set to awaken one year later to a perfectly balanced world. Not all goes as planned. Sadly, only a few survive the stasis process. Nora Lane and Jason Rudolph are two of those who survive. When they wake, like the other survivors, neither of them remember how they got there and why. All they know is they must get out. A countdown clock on the door winds down to something. They are ill-prepared for what they will face when that door opens.
This was a unique premise in what can sometimes be a stale post-apocalyptic genre.
Human created plague Mass die-off Hidden bunker Stupid ‘intelligent’ characters Not a romance No aliens No zombies Cliffhanger ending
The plan:
A sampling of mankind is hidden away in a protective bunker, placed in stasis where they will sleep through the entire event. They are set to awaken one year later to a perfectly balanced world.
Buuuuut, you know that got all messed up!
This is a very easy story to read. There is little to no character backstory, information is slowly dribbled out, reads like a late night tv sci-fi. Not bad, not great. Might read the next book.
Like so many self-published novels, this one tells an incredibly compelling story - I'd venture to say much more so than is typical - but the editing is absolutely horrendous. It's nothing as simple as a few misplaced commas and grammatical errors......This one takes it several steps further, and at times I felt I was reading something at the level that my fourth grader writes (and she's a pretty darn good writer)......It is truly that poorly edited!
I NEVER take the time to review books, but I just had to for this one because the story concept is so incredible, but the grammatical and punctuation mistakes are so distracting - sometimes to the point where you have to re-read several times to figure out what the author is trying to say.
I get the point of self-published books, but come on......The author could've had a grade school class read this book for editing and it would still be a major improvement. The sentence structures, grammar and punctuation are an absolute joke. I'd like to be able to actually enjoy the process of reading this great story, but the writer needs to get it together. These are more than careless errors - the multitude of mistakes make the author appear to be completely uneducated. Hope she gets an editor (or a fourth grader) to proofread her next novel.....
I'm actually in the middle of reading the sequel to this book but my review is for this first one "Reset" If once again you put the editing to one side you have here a very good story, but just about every readers review in every book I've read by Jacqueline Druga complains about the dreadful editing and I can't understand why she doesn't fix this problem as I'm sure she reads these reviews. Google tells me she's written 61 books so surely she's taken the hint by now. Anyway, the storyline is great and as with some of her other books could quite easily be made into a mini series. People wake up after being in stasis for an unknown amount of time not knowing how they got there or why. The story progresses from there and they learn that the new world they themselves in is nothing like the old world they left behind. This book is quite a quick read with a different view on the apocalypse.
This isn't the greatest book I've read from this author. The storyline is weak, and the characters aren't well developed. A group of strangers wake up in a strange place, without knowing how they got there. They've been in suspended animation, but they don't know why, at least initially. And the world has changed a great deal. An apocalyptic event has wiped out a huge percentage of humanity, and these few strangers may be the key to start up a new society. Or maybe not. Also, this book is very short, and there's a second book, which I may or may not read. Results: there were several spelling/grammar mistakes, and the story felt rushed. This is not one of the author's best.
The author is very prolific but goes for quantity over quality, at the expense of grammar, punctuation and spelling. And logic. Even so, I enjoy her books because they are imaginative, post-apocalyptic and they have characters with backgrounds. There is always a strong female lead but unfortunately she is always exactly the same person, in every book.
This particular book features the highly unlikely scenario of a group of people unknowingly and unwillingly put into hibernation by the government at the start of a plague, in the hope that some will emerge with skills and knowledge to help the human population regrow and establish itself. Things go wrong, of course.
I really enjoyed this book. In true Jacqueline Druga style, the post-apocalyptic world was very well done. I liked how the group of MCs started off in the stasis chambers with no memories and the slow reveal of information.
The pacing was good and I enjoyed the different POVs.
I wish this went through another round of editing because there were some typos and errors that made me go back a few pages to double check what had happened, and I was pulled out of the story every time.
The ending was a bit abrupt for me but I'm glad there is a second book because I need more answers.
I just wrote a fairly detailed review of "Reset," and as I was quickly rereading it before posting it just disappeared. I don't have to tell you how frustrated I am at the moment! This time I am going for short and sweet (or at least a little shorter and a little sweeter)...
I often enjoy apocalyptic thrillers, but the ones I do read usually have zombies in them. Yet, when I read the synopsis for "Reset" I just had to give this novella a try. It did not disappoint! Quite frankly, the quicker I write this review, the sooner I can get started on the second book in this series titled "Salvation."
The biggest difference between "Reset" and the zombie novels I usually read is the fact that this could really happen. The dead may never rise from their graves and start eating the living, but a virus could easily ravage most of the human population.
Teenagers and adults alike who enjoy a good apocalyptic thriller will enjoy reading this novella. I would personally have no problem letting my teenage daughter read "Reset." Sexuality is basically nonexistent; and I can't think of a single instance where there was any bad language that some readers don't like to deal with.
My only complaint is the fact that the editing could have been a little better. There are a few places where a word was repeated twice in a row; and there were even a few sentences that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. This all could have been avoided if the author or editor just read through the book one last time. I do admit I am a perfectionist at times; but no matter what, these typos and mistakes were easily noticeable. For this reason I would give "Reset" 4.5 stars; but since I can't give half star ratings and the story itself was amazing I still had to rate it 5 stars for all intensive purposes. The editing errors were far too minor to take away a whole star.
I have read a few other books from Jacqueline Druga in the past, and they have all been really good. Once I am done with this series I look forward to reading other books written by her.
For the writing this was 3.5 stars because there are a lot of errors. At one point, the name Greg was there but I realized it was really supposed to be Grant. Just one example, and a decent editor could really help. The story itself was really good (nearly 5 stars). It starts out so differently than most and the mystery unfolds for you at the same time as the characters (one of the talents of this writer). I very much enjoyed this and look forward to the next with hopefully fewer errors and typos.
~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~
The narrator did a good job with this book; no complaints there.
However, overall the story was a bit slow and with so many characters to follow and it being so short it was difficult to really connect with many of the characters.
Interesting premise though and if you have kindle unlimited worth a looksee.
Very well written with an interesting plot. I was surprised by how easily the writer caught my interest & reeled me in. I could not put this story down, I finished it in one go & must now find the sequel.
The overall storyline was great. It was interesting and kept me turning the pages. My problem with the story was the typos. There were several. I’ve always enjoyed Druga’s books but, truly, can you not hire a proof reader?
4 stars. Could be longer however thoroughly enjoyed this book and will continue with the next in the series. Like her other series - while the books work well stand-alone, I have a feeling the Series will in fact read as one great big epic. My favourite kind.
Loved the story line, great premise. Author needs to get a professional editor/proofreader, many small errors and inconsistencies that detract from fully enjoying the read.
I don't know how Ms Druga comes up with so many different apocalyptic scenarios but I'm sure glad she does! Zombies and EMPs are getting tiresome. Starting bookc2 of this series now.
This one took a while for me to get into it just because of me not the book. But once I got to about 60% I had to finish it in that sitting. Can't wait to see what happens in the second book.
Another plague story! We have survivor's guilty and evil people left over and a fight for survival. Same old story. I really don't why I bother to read these novels. Everyone has the same story, just a few minor changes. Please think of something NEW!!!!
The Positives There are several good things to say about this book. First, the characters are completely believable and react just as irrationally and emotionally as I would expect most people to do in these circumstances. They're not particularly likable, but neither is the average person (if you ask me). Second, the mystery of what happened to the world and how these people came to be here is well presented and engaging. I definitely found myself wondering how much time had passed, what had gone wrong with the majority of the genesis pods, what happened to the president, etc. Lastly, the level of description and the basic writing style was solid, and the whole thing was well-paced. Definitely an intriguing and well-presented story.
The Negatives There's really just one HUGE one. OMG, get a copyeditor! The number of grammar mistakes, typos, random tense changes, and sentences that just plain don't make sense was maddening. If you can't clean up your own work, hire someone. Just don't run spell check and assume it's okay.
In short, if you're someone who is bothered by poor grammar and semantics, just don't pick this one up at all. You'll be saving yourself ground-down teeth and a lot of eye-rolling. Because the story is solid enough that once you start, you'll want to finish despite how annoying the lack of copyedit is.
I find that there are plenty of reviewers that will explain the details of the story. I would rather tell about my experience than let out any of the mystery of the story. I am a longtime fan of this writer. I have several of her books that I have enjoyed more than others. This story has many components that I like. It has a mystery and unknown factor that made me want to know what will happen next. I've read so many books that I have a difficult time getting lost in the story. This story kept me engaged and wondering. I was surprised at a few points but I always wanted more. I am not someone who gets annoyed with grammar but I did see a few mistakes. To me this was a minor irritant several times, but I know that some find this a deal breaker. The other issue that I had was I thought the ending was too fast. I enjoyed the build up and story. This author built a world that I did not want to end. I wanted to see more of it. I wanted to experience more of what happened and the people. This was a pleasure to escape into and relax on for an afternoon.
Gotta love Jacqueline Druga, all her books are great! But this one was really slow and uneventful. There could of been so much more action for this book but there was on my two instances of violence and those were uncreative. She did put a lot of info in the book and by the end all of your questions will be answered but it hurt her trying to split up the group between so many characters that I found myself not really loving any of them. I'll probably get book 2 since its free for me on unlimited but I wouldn't have bought it of it wasn't. Other than that it WAS a good story, just not a page turner like I was hoping it would be. 3.5*
I choose to rate this a five star because it had an excellent story line, kept me turning pages until I finished, great characters and only a few areas where it appeared the story was sit down then picked up again. Another reason is alot of situations seemed entirely plausible, there was none of the mutant cyborg zombie stuff everyone has completely worn out!!! All in all, I loved it! Kudos to the author!
