Join Rider and the Pups Investigators Pack in their second silly mystery about a fishy impostor.
Rider Woofson is the best dog detective in Pawston, maybe even in the whole world! His job is to protect the city and its citizens from the dangerous criminal underbelly. So when Prince Bubbles—a reclusive but friendly prince—visits Pawston from the underwater country of New Sealand, Rider and the PI pack receive a tip that the prince is an impostor and spring into action.
With another purr-fect mystery on their paws, Rider and the PI pack set out on an exciting investigation to uncover the truth about their royal visitor.
With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Rider Woofson chapter books are perfect for beginning readers!
But I'm starting to notice that something seems fishy, and that’s that the illustrator is (at least subconsciously) reenforcing a white hero stereotype. Most of the villains are dark - the cat, the Rottweiler, the octopus, etc. - and most of the characters in the PI group are light-furred. So, even though I think the story has value for children in its text, I think it's a book that's only appropriate to be read aloud to children. Children don't need to be shown the pictures that accompany the text. That said, it's not badly drawn with its cute cartoon style. (How much of this light vs. dark skin/fur decision was the illustrator's? It could have been the editor's call. I don't know where the blame lies, but it probably does not lie with the author of the text.)
Delightfully punny. The Rider Woofson series has jokes, action, easy to follow mystery, and great illustrations. It's a great series for reluctant readers due to it's quick pace and peppery text. It moves fast and readers won't get bogged down with so many words. They'll feel successful in finishing this one.It kept my 6 year old captivated as I read. He started reading it on his own (Yes, he's a very high reader) right after I was done. He's asked for the next one immediately upon finishing each of the first two books in the series. I highly recommend them for your 1st-3rd grade reader.
If you know a young reader that enjoys animals and solving mysteries, then this is the book for them! This book contains everything that a young reader could hope for: a prince, a kidnapping, unexpected villains and a detective squad! I appreciated how this book, while part of a series, can be read as a stand alone; the books within this series do not have to be read within sequential order. On the whole, a paw-some book!
