Read aloud to Gwen and Alec. As much as I loved the first book in this series, book 2 was a little more disappointing. Yes, the STEM aspects were a little over the top and silly in both, but this was so hard to believe (their survival in the time of the dinosaurs, no food or shelter, saving a dino egg, etc) but the friendship and teamwork aspects were still spot on.
This chapter book for the last book of the year for reading to my second graders as part of the Real Men Read program.
The story follows 'The Data Set', three kids who's friendship with an eccentric inventory almost maroons them back in the Crestaceous period with a miniature Stegosaurus from a previous misadventure with 'growth guns' and time machines.
The book starts in the middle of story since it is #2 of a 6 set series.
Not a bad book but not a great spell binding book. And with my classes, if you are going to read a chapter book, it better really hold their attention. This book was right on the edge.
But it does give a lot of things to talk about and learn about if you had time to stop and follow the ideas - how to build a shelter in a jungle, can you really start a fire by rubbing 2 sticks together, can time travel really work.
We celebrated completing the book by giving a plastic dinosaur to everyone in the class and handing out 2 dinosaur eggs (candy eggs) to take home to share with a reader to encourage them to read at home and talk about the story.
The Data Set accidentally was sent back to the time of the dinosaurs with stegosaurs. They walked to find a place to stay. Then a pterosaur snatched stegosaurs and went to its nest so the Data Set ran toward the flying Jurassic chicken's nest. There they found stegosaurs and safely rescued the guy's egg you know chicken. They led stegosaurs to his family and rescued. They made a fire and waited for the man with the time machine. Then an allosaur attacked but one of the members made a fire on its nose so it ran away. The man came and rescued the kids. This book has an adventure with danger and action by the team.
This was an exciting and quick read. Great for the younger kids and the whole family. Interesting, fun, adventure-filled, good illustrations, zany characters and a good ending. Great for reading anytime. It doesn't take long to read but is packed full. Enjoy!
Second in the series. This book picks up where the first left off. The three DATA set kids are back in time. They learn about various dinosaurs and make it back in time for dinner when Dr. Bunsen arrives.
My kid is in grade 2 and he rates the book 4.5 ⭐. He said "I like when the time machine was broken". He reread that part so many times and laughed every time. Great book for kids getting into chapter books grade 2-3.
This is seriously such a cute series. soemthing every kid should enjoy! has great characters even if there not super developed, and great plot! loved this one
If you know a young reader that loves dinosaurs and time travelling adventures, then this is an excellent book to choose. That being said, this is the second book in the Data Set series. If you have not read the first book, which I had not before reading this book, the reader will most likely be confused in the beginning. There is not an introduction explaining who Dr. Bunsen or the children are and it seems as though the reader comes in during the middle of an adventure; which means that the reader must play catch up and determine who people are and what is going on. As a book in a series, if read consecutively, this is a great book for dino-loving young readers. As a standalone book, there is a lot of information that must be grasped very quickly.
3 friends get stuck in the Jurassic era and have to save a baby steogsaurus from a pterosaur and survive long enough to get rescued.
Chapter book appropriate for dino lovers. Good for Time Warp Trio fans, with fewer contemporary culture references, so it will probably seem current longer.
I hope I can get some readers interested in these. I want to see how they react - is there enough story and character development and enough information to interest them and keep them going? Not sure - hope to find out.
I found this book on recommendation from the librarian at the Chicago public library. It is a book in a series about the DATA kids. This time they are sent back in time to the prehistoric era. Some of the kids are loving this adventure while others are not. They are worried about the butterfly effect - if they change something will they change the future? This book is a easy chapter book intended for readers beginning to read chapter books. With its Magic School Bus meets Honey I shrunk the kids feel - the book is a fun read for kids. It also provides some information about dinosaurs for kids to learn from. I would recommend this as a read aloud for kindergarten while covering a dinosaur unit. It is a fun way for kids to learn about dinosaurs. I read this book on a kindle, the book translated well to media print with the pictures are simple and in black and white. They are also pictures that add to the story not create it, so nothing is lost in the picture to print.
