Sky Fall #3

Let the Wind Rise

Rate this book
The breathtaking action and whirlwind adventure build to a climax in this thrilling conclusion to the “remarkably unpredictable” (BCCB) Sky Fall trilogy from the bestselling author of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.

Vane Weston is ready for battle. Against Raiden’s army. Against the slowly corrupting Gale Force. Even against his own peaceful nature as a Westerly. He’ll do whatever it takes, including storming Raiden’s icy fortress with the three people he trusts the least. Anything to bring Audra home safely.

But Audra won’t wait for someone to rescue her. She has Gus—the guardian she was captured with. And she has a strange “guide” left behind by the one prisoner who managed to escape Raiden. The wind is also rising to her side, rallying against their common enemy. When the forces align, Audra makes her play—but Raiden is ready.

Freedom has never held such an impossible price, and both groups know the sacrifices will be great. But Vane and Audra started this fight together. They’ll end it the same way.

YOU KNOW that really annoying thing when you know something is a bad idea but your brain is still like dooooo it. Yeah thats me about reading this book

(this art is by walkingnorth on tumblr!)

ANYWAY me and this series have a pretty rocky relationship. The characters annoyed me so much in book 1, but I stayed in it for the plot. In book 2 the characters got better but the plot fell off. And book 3 ..... everything just burned.

I wanted to read this series because it's basically Avatar: The Last Airbender plot wise. It's about windwalkers or sylphs, a race of people who have the power to control the wind. There is four different wind groups - the Northerlies, Southerlies, Westerlies and Easterlies ... each controls a different type of wind but live side by side in harmony. AND THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN RAIDEN ATTACKED. The main character, Vane, is the last Westerly, and he needs to go up against Raiden to save the windwalkers from total destruction.

So YEAH I was in it for the Avatar plot, and I kinda had hopes for this book because I enjoyed book 2 a bit, but I literally skim read this book from page 200 I was so bored

WHY I COULDN'T GET INTO THIS

Characters. I really didn't like the main character Vane. I found him whiny and annoying for most of it, and his constant inner monologue was really cringeworthy more often then not. He was overly sexual toward the girls in the series and I just found him uncomfortable. I did like that he was an unusual male MC in that he wasn't the gung-ho no feelings fighter manly man type, but I still found him annoying.

Audra I liked more, and I thought after book 2 she'd have more good character development - but everything just crashed and burned. I genuinely don't think she was in any different place by the end of book 3 then she was in book 1.

I DID like the side characters, Arella, Aston, Solana, Os and Gus were interesting and they should have been the main characters.

SLUT SHAMING. throughout this series, girls who wear short clothes are lusted after because they're "exposing themselves" and are also called skimpy, slutty or skanky. One girl has the power to absorb wind - so the more skin open to the air the better her power. Despite this she's constantly called skanky and skimpy and that annoyed me SO MUCH. It was just unnecessary shaming. I also hated the implication girls who dressed less modest were less honest, more likely to cheat and more likely to "steal yo man", basically. Also, the girls hated on the other girls because of their dress and urghghkd WHY

PLOT In this book I found the plot super lacking. For 200 pages literally nothing happens and the end scene wasn't even exciting. I just found it so boring and unsatisfying. The final showdown with the big bad was SO SHORT and it wasn't even dramatic even though he's supposed to be the biggest bad in all the land.

THE ROMANCE it was just unconvincing, to me personally. And I found the angst elements of it annoying, there was SO MUCH unnecessary teenage angst I just didn't care about.

LITERALLY ZERO DIVERSITY

MY ONE POSITIVE I liked the ending. I liked that my favourite character and who I was rooting for got what she deserved. I was pretty satisfied with the conclusion to be honest.

"DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST MISS?" Vane asks.
"I TOLD YOU TO GET DOWN!" Aston shouts. "YOU'RE LUCKY I DIDN'T HIT YOUR GIANT SQUARE HEAD!"
"I have a square head?" Vane asks.

Overall this is actually a 1.5 star. Really wouldn't recommend this series to .... anyone really. BUT I have heard good things about Shannon Messenger's other series so she's not cancelled yet, I might check out one of her other series. This one just wasn't for me AT ALL

But I am glad I've finished it at least because yaaaay one more series I can mark as completed.

Update #1: Praying that there won't be a cover change like a certain series! *cough* Across the Universe *cough*

Update #2: My prayers weren't answered... The new cover looks fine, but the originals looked so much nicer! Whyyyyyy *cries*

Review:

This was such a great conclusion. It always held my attention with its constant action. A full review will be coming, but it's needless to say that this series is one of my favorite trilogies out there!

"DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST MISS?" Vane asks.
"I TOLD YOU TO GET DOWN!" Aston shouts. "YOU'RE LUCKY I DIDN'T HIT YOUR GIANT SQUARE HEAD!"
"I have a square head?" Vane asks.

I had to use a quote from probably my favourite character and why not one where you can witness his sass.

3 stars for this conclusion so far, because at first I might have rated it even a little lower.

I don't think conclusions help me this year. In other cases it's my too high expectations. In this case, I just felt indifferent to the story...? Maybe?

The entire book is just two sequences and I was rather bored with the first and the second lost me at some points too.
I also didn't care about a few characters and to be specific, it was the females.

I don't know why but it happened. I didn't care about Solana from the previous book (unecessary drama at points), but Audra lost me as well and I didn't like that. I missed that previous tamed spunk? I felt she was lacking a little in this one? I just didn't feel her.

And based on my reactions on these two, I became indifferent (not always) on Vane too. And that's even more sad because I like Vane. I like that he isn't the typical macho guy that fears nothing and just masters the techniques 20 pages in, but he is in fact senitive and scared most of the time and pretty sarcastic. And I love his reactions. But he was dragged down by the others. And the romance might have been all over the place.

On the other hand, though I loved Aston (who I still can't remember in book 2) and Gus. I think that crucial part that stars Gus made me feel something for the first time while reading this book and with Aston I just loved his many shades. And he was probably my favourite character by the end of the book.

I don't know. I still feel confused about my experience reading this. Perhaps if I read it at another time, I might have enjoyed it more, but right now I feel it was a nice conclusion but nothing that will leave everlasting effects on me.

And that's a shame because the concept was pretty unique for me, since I hadn't read (and still haven't) a similar book (in terms of windwalkers and such) before.
Maybe a re-read in the distant future will be required.

This book is very different from the others. They gripped you and held you at the edge of your seat. I did not feel that with this one.
One major problem I had in this book was the ending. Raiden's defeat was low-key to say the least. Also, Audra had training and sacrificed so much to avenge her father and keep Vane safe. The end goal for her was always to be able to defeat Raiden, she was even willing to sacrifice her own life to defeat him. Then, Messenger decides for her to sit home and wait for her man to return from battle. A terrible decision really. She built the trilogy for Vane, Audra, and Solane to defeat him-they all had the most reasons/grief over Raiden's actions and should be the ones to see him dead. All four of the new rulers should have fought him to show unity. Instead, Audra sat and had everyone else fight her for. Which was very disappointing for me and was unrealistic to the story line.
Another thing that bothered me was Messenger's overuse of short paragraphs, all capital words, and italics. I get that short paragraphs and italics are an effective way to showcase a important sentence or way to empathize something to the reader. But when she used those devices three times in two pages it got annoying fast.
Overall, this was not the book I thought it would be.

09-25-16: page 105, DNF'ed it.

I wasn't too wow-ed by the first two books, but I flew through them which made it easier. This one on the other hand...

Maybe it's because 2016 just hasn't been a very good reading year so far, maybe it's because I decided that life's too short for crappy books, maybe it's because this book simply is really badly written...

I mean, c'mon... the plot's so thin it's almost non-existent. The characters are two-dimensional at best, but mostly they're just shells of gender-stereotypical, immature seemingly 15 but probably meant to be older. The only one mildly interesting is Arella yet she’s dismissed as an evil, betraying piece of shit who isn’t worth more than a second glance. That’s an interesting perception which could have been a great spin on the “plot”, but it’s just left at snappy comments and “winds being thrown at her.” I’m so tired of winds being thrown around, it’s literally all that happens in this book. That and Vane being a 10-year old with the vocabulary of a 7-year old.
I find it hard to even have opinions about this book, that’s how little it excites and interests me. I hate to see a trilogy end like this, even if it wasn’t a very strong one to begin with.

I really loved this book.
The ending was....... marvelous.
And the fact that Vane (spoiler) is so unlike a Westerly that...
I don't know, I guess I just can't seem to grasp how...
but then again, he DID find that way...
I don't know.

I'm really happy that Vane and Audra are together, though.
Oh yeah! Did I mention that they (spoiler) again?
I WILL CHERISH THAT MOMENT FOREVER

Oh, yesh, and when Solana roasted Os so badly that time... joy!!!!!! FINALLY you do ONE thing right, Solana!

I was going to rate this two stars, because I got sick of all the violence, torture, and tiny dresses—but the way they was pretty clever, so three. I was reading this series to preview for my ten-year-old who is a fan of the author, and my final answer is . . . no way!

Ugh. I'm so happy this mess is over.

It really makes me sad how much I disliked this series. I love Keepers to death and was expecting a grand YA adventure in this series.

Instead I got the usual YA tropes...

...with a male protag.

Honestly, this book brought nothing new. Sure there were a few twists and a few of the jokes were a little funny but it suffers from the typical issues that YA has.

Especially the useless female protag trope. I was begging, begging for Audra to show off the amazing skills that she apparently had.

Spoiler alert, it doesn't happen. Audra isn't even there for the finale battle! Solana was there and she showed off more badass-ness than Audra. THE DANG GIRL IS A PRINCESS. I love my strong princesses but still. Like...whut.

Also, like always male gaze is in full effect to the point it doesn't make sense.

These slyph are used to showing skin. WHY DOES SOLANA AND AUDRA FEEL AWKWARD AROUND VANE STARING AT THEM. He was staring at their legs, ect. Aka, body parts that both should be okay with showing.

That was downright infuriating for me.

I can't even really talk about the ending because I was skimming for most of it because I just could not take it anymore.

So....when is Lodestar coming out?

Let The Sky Fall- 3.5 stars
Let The Storm Break- 3 stars
Let The Wind Rise- 4 stars
Average- 3.5 stars

Despite an unnecessary love triangle (square? kinda?) and a LOT of similarity to KOTLC, especially in the first book, I wasn’t disappointed by Shannon Messenger’s other series. Sky Fall is full of action, romance, and humor, and the last book was by far the best of the trilogy. Vane and Audra annoyed me in the first book, but grew on me over the trilogy, and I thought their story had a perfect ending. I’d recommend it for any 12+ fans of KOTLC, or anyone who loves a kinda stereotypical YA fantasy. Overall, I’d say I like KOTLC better, but Sky Fall helped bridge the gap before Stellarlune comes out in November.

March 9, 2020 review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐this was a great ending of the Sky Fall series! I loved how the entire book was packed with action from the beginning to the end. Audra was super courageous in this book, and I loved how she kept persevering even though she watched her best friend die. The ending of this book just made me sigh. It was so perfect. Overall, this book was incredibly amazing, and super hard to put down. I would totally recommend it.

Meh. Let the Wind Rise was about the same quality as the first one, and not on par with the second. Am I the only one where the second in a series is the worst one?? The sudden change in this series threw me for a loop.

There wasn't a lot of plot. A majority of the book was fixing the cliffhanger from the last book with a very minimal conclusion tying the entire series together. I thought the book was poorly paced, as I spent more time reading about the escape/rescue than I did with them trying to stop Raiden.

The characters were also a huge letdown. Vane was still boring and only thinking about girls, and while I liked that he wasn't the typical 'macho' male lead, he had very little personality other than sass (which was great, I admit) and thinking about Audra/Solana/other such female issues. Audra was better in the second, too, because she suddenly became defined by her relationship - again, even though she had grown in the last book. The other characters had little roles even though they could easily have been almost-main characters (where they should have been) and yet their characters are Flat Stanleys walking with two stick figures. Was that the right metaphor? Does anyone even remember Flat Stanley?

The conclusion was also a letdown. I kind of hoped Raiden might be given a chance to better his character. Because of everything the crew had found out it was setting up a way for him to do a quick change in personality. Instead, he went the opposite direction and all the buildup and details to his character went out the window and were basically forgotten. He could have been Darth Vader, guys, come on.

The romance wasn't as bad, mainly because the characters were again separated for a majority of the book, but I think the 'love-triangle' was already cleared up in the previous book, so I didn't understand why there was so much confusion and hesitation and mutual pining in a way that read like fanfiction.

I feel like there were more issues but I can't quite remember them now.

Well, I read Sky Fall because I thought it would be interesting and so I could cross it off my Want To Read list, and I can safely say that one of those things was accomplished.

3.5 stars. It was a good read. Good, not great. I would still recommend it when one is looking for a time killer.

The good:
Vane grew up a lot in this book. He isn't as whiney and he definitely learned to take charge. The climax was as expected. There weren't any weird twists that made you leap out of your seat with manic frustration, nor was there anything that broke the author/reader contract. I actually liked the turn of events with Arella too.

Now for the gripes:
Am I the only one who feels as if Audra turned from tough guardian to wimpy damsel in distress? I understand that torture changes you, but it felt as if she became a completely different person, as if she and Solana changed places in some sort of weird brain swap. I don't know, it just felt strange to me.

I also found a couple more grammar mistakes than the last one. Missing words, lost punctuation...man, I feel like I should be on a grammar treasure hunt when I read such things. Oh where, oh where did your quotation marks go? Did they magically disappear in the conversion process to ebook? Or did it get lost in editing?

Anyway, it was still a decent read.

For my clean readers:
Mild language, violence, torture in both physical and mental forms, sexual nuances but no follow through or descriptions, insinuation of possible rape, and murder.

Gus - NOOOOOO! Was so sad with that part of the book. I had hopes for Gus and Solana in the future, but that was not to be.

Grateful that Arella FINALLY turned over a new leaf and helped her daughter. And embraced the meaning of her deceased husband had spoken of with Audra being how he had left his legacy behind.

Audra and Vane - their kiss with many audience members was awesome. And glad it got under Os's skin. Good!

My favorite line of the book was from Solana: "Honestly, for two stubborn, willful people, you both can be insecure and wishy-washy." Great way to sum up Audra and Vane's insecurities about their relationship. So glad Audra and Vane finally figured it all out. And Solana helped them along the way.

Having lived in New Hampshire for nearly twenty years and being able to experience the Cog Railway on Mount Washington this past summer made the sylphs' castle being set there super special and very relatable. Loved that setting!

Fun read - loved the romance aspect, know others (like my husband ;)) might have different opinions about that.

This book was rlly good it was like a 4.8 any way GUS Dies by raidens suicide draft I think that’s what it’s called 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I was literally crying 😭 and they rebound vane and Audra also solana starts using the power of pain but at least she learns how to control it by using already ruined winds by raiden they do end up killing raiden🎊 I was kinda scared they won’t but actually something that shocked me was that it was vane and solana in the last fight against raiden but I get why and that’s actually better for them also the way there going to start ruling was rlly smart so there gonna have 4 leaders for each wind and they will be vane, solana, Audra, and Aston it should have been his but since he died Aston was it I rlly like Aston tho one of my favs but anyway this was a rlly good book over all and I would recommend that’s all from me luv u all bye 😘

To be honest, I had a really hard time rating this book. Don't get me wrong, this book was amazing, but there were some parts that I was a little disappointed about. The huge battle against all of the Stormers verses all of the Gales felt a little rushed. There was tbis huge build up and then it was over. Also, the battle against Raiden, Vale, and Solana. What was that? They go over there for a few minutes and then they kill Raiden just like that? It was too easy in my opinion. I did decide to give it 5 stars though, because everything else was really well written. The ending hit me right in the feels! Shannon Messenger is an incredible author!
