A sweet story of two friends building a fort in the backyard. Illustrations were just this side of weird, but it didn't detract from the story. I loved that the simple sentences rhymed, but there's still a lot of text for a supposed Level 1 easy reader (our library has it as Level 3).
Busy Bug wants to build a fort. His friend Bitsy comes over to play. They build a fort outside. I'm not really into bug books, and I didn't especially like the illustrations.
Busy Bug gets creative and uses materials around the house and yard to build a fort. Always a classic childhood activity! I hope this easy reader inspires some children to create their own nooks.
Nice spacing and word placement (nice bright backgrounds that do not cover images; mostly white but some blue). However, I felt that some of the words were more difficult than a level one reader. That's the thing about publishers creating their own criteria for early reader books! For them, perhaps it fit the standard, but wouldn't for other pubs.
The rhyming is pretty inconsistent, but the story is nice enough.
I do love Carter's buggy pop-ups, though, and this was a cute format!
