Mouseheart #2

Hopper's Destiny

Rate this book
A brave mouse attempts to rebuild a fallen empire in this second book of the epic animal adventure series set in the subway tunnels of Brooklyn, for “fans of Erin Hunter, Brian Jaques, and Kathryn Lasky” ( School Library Journal ).

The battle to free Titus’s camps is over, and Hopper, Zucker, Firren, and their loyal followers are working to rebuild. But the tunnels are in a state of chaos, and without the sinister peace accord to protect the rodents, Queen Felina and her growing army of ferals is a greater threat than ever before.

In the Mūs Village, Pinkie has led a coup and is now ruling with an iron paw. And Pup has become cold and defiant, a change that Hopper never saw coming.

When exterminators raid the tunnels, Hopper is snatched away by the intruders and taken back up to the daylight world where he was born.

Upland, Hopper makes new allies, and as he enjoys the sights and sounds of Brooklyn, he wonders if he will ever make it back into the tunnels to restore safety and prosperity, as foretold by La Rocha’s prophecy.

But why should Hopper fulfill a destiny he never wanted in the first place?

Theme: In Mouseheart, the author explores the theme of the boarder between good and evil. The emporor titus has a peace accord with the cat queen Felina. The accored states that Titus sends mouse to be Felina's food every period of time to protect the citizens. He is trading life for life but to protect people, and is he evil? Another example in the story, Hopper's sister Pinkie made the MŪS villege a strong and safe place. However the way she strenghthen the villege is by being a dictator and forcing every citiznes to join his army. Could we say that she is evil?

Connections: As I am reading, I am starting to notice a few connections between Hopper and Salva (A Long Walk To Water). Hopper were taken away by humans to the Brooklyn uplands. Away from his friends. Away from his family. Away from his home. His friend Firren and Zucker were missing and no one knows if they are alive or not. Same with Salva, when the war broke out in his villege, he had to flee his home, away from his family and friends. They have two things in common, they both had faith in there family and friends that they are able to escape. "Faith brings hope, and hope brings strength."

I love how the author make the small animals big and almost human like with Atlantis and how they all have human emotions. It really changes how you feel about rats and mice. They experience loss and when the exterminators destroyed Atlantis and the cats moved in after to "feast on the rat-bouquet" it really chilled me to the bone.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it because my son asked me to. After reading the first one, I was hooked. I actually liked this one better than the first one. I found there were a lot of truths about life that my son and I enjoyed talking about. The characters were relatable and how they handled trials and joys, were great.

Was mir hier allerdings wieder aufgefallen ist: Hoppers unbeständiges Wissen.

3.75 ⭐️ A great sequel!

In „Mouseheart-Hopper’s Destiny“ by Lisa Fiedler we continue Hoppers journey to save the animals living in the New Yorker underground.

This book starts off immediately after the events of book one and manages to keep the fast pace of its predecessor! It’s again mostly written from Hopper‘s point of view but we also get Pip‘s insight and some diary entries from the legendary „La Rocha“.

I’m truly amazed by the great characterization and character development in these books. Hopper and his siblings have tremendous story arc‘s and I loved the unique spin on the „chosen one“ trope. The book deals with heavy topics in a way children can comprehend without loosing nuance. Overall I appreciated the exploration of morally grey actions and the question if the ends justify the means.

I read the physical book alongside the audiobook and both are wonderful. The physical copy has many beautiful illustrations and the audiobook narration managed to immerse me even more into the story.

The story had not as high intrigue as the first book for me which lead to my thoughts partially drifting in the middle part of the book. Nonetheless the ending hooked me again to see what will happen in the third book!

I like the series so far, but there are few thing I didn't like, sometimes there were a lot of repetition and unnecessary details, and I didn't like the La Rocha character, it's disturbing, and bad influence, as it is a character that wants to solve problems through lies, and giving himself god powers which were not necessary at all.

It's a long novel about nonstop war. It is a war story that I had to give it my full attention as it wasn't a tale that could make you relax.

On the positive side, the story is interesting in general and has some good values that could teach children, but I felt it was unnecessarily long, and I had to skip few pages from time to time.

Mouseheart, Hoppers Destiny is about a young mouse who ventures up into the Brooklyn streets and meets whole lot of new friends. He also enjoys the food along the way. But when he is called back to the Brooklyn subway tunnels he hears grave news about his friend and family. My favorite scene is when Hopper tries candy and gets on a serious sugar high. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventures of animals with a big hearts.

Th is book got me in my feelings. The author knew exactly how to get the book started and how to end it. The author made the adventure very interesting. There is nothing I can add to this book because the characters and plot were created just to good. I would recommend this book to anyone. It shows how anyone can get through whatever situation their going through.

Whoa
This book was most definitely a step up from the first book.
I love love LOVE the way in which Fiedler is able to write such powerful but simple dialogue in a way that makes it accessible to kids while still teaching such great life lessons. Though definitely still a children's book, I forgive the simplicity and praise its ability to touch readers.

Man this series. For a "Junior" novel it can get rather dark. Great stuff over all though. Good life isn't always good vs evil lessons. Definitely a good series for those kids in between the Junior and YA sections.

The second book in the mouse heart series. It gives us the final battle against Felina and her Gerald against the smaller animals and hoppers adventures when he goes upland because of a terrible thing that happened in Atlantia. Overall it is a very good sequel.

Mouseheart was a delightful random read that I came across last year. It wasn't perfect, but it reminded me of my days reading Redwall and had a solid, well-written plot. I really enjoyed reading it and looked forward to other book in the series. Hopper's Destiny is the recently released sequel to Mouseheart.

Hopper's Destiny picks up almost where Mouseheart left off. Hopper, our hero, is struggling to figure out how he is going to help the citizens of Atlantia. The battle that occurred in the first book may be over, but peace may not last forever and the citizens of the city are not prepared to fight. Hopper believes that the only way to succeed is to work with the outcast Mus encampment that is currently being run by his sister, Pinkie. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned.

Somehow, upon returning from his meeting with Pinkie, Hopper is transported to the Upland, where he meets new friends who will prove helpful in the upcoming final battle against Queen Felina.

Overall, I felt Hopper's Destiny was just as strong as Mouseheart. It had solid writing, it was fast paced, and the characters were evolving from the first book. The battle scenes were detailed and didn't border on the grotesque. I really enjoyed seeing how the characters drew out some of the battle strategies and planned for certain events.

I was really glad to see that the author took the time to make sure that not all cats were portrayed in a mean or evil way. As the story progressed, there were cats that were good, cats that were indifferent. It was a little disheartening to see that every cat in the first book was mean.

Most of the loose ends from the first book are tied up nicely in Hopper's Destiny. The whole La Rocha aspect of the series is explored and explained (fairly) satisfactory. There are some aspects of Hopper's Destiny that are left unresolved and we have to wait for the next installment, but the ending was satisfactory. It felt complete and not a huge cliffhanger.

Even though Hopper's Destiny was a strong book, it wasn't without its flaws. One of the biggest issues I had, which was similar to Mouseheart, was the way the mice/characters would do certain things. It didn't make sense to me, unless they were mutant mice.

For example, Hopper is a mouse. He isn't a giant rat; he is a normal, regular mouse. There is a scene in which he flings an extension cord up and over his head. The cord flies through a mail slot and he uses it to climb up and out of the mail slot. I struggle to see how a mouse could pick up an extension cord (used by humans) and toss it unless it was a mutant.

The scene above is in direct contrast to the other references to the animals/characters size. There is a beautifully drawn photo of a mouse in a small bed and behind it are human earrings used as wall hangings. It seemed the sizes were disproportionate to what was going on. If earrings were used as wall hangings, how was an extension cord so easily used?

I don't think the size issue is something children would notice, but I think older readers would definitely question it. Sure, we are talking about talking animals and animals with human-like behaviors, but I just think the portrayal could have been a little more realistic.

Another issue I ran into, and this is purely personal preference, was Pup (the younger brother of Pinkie and Hopper). He was so mean and damaged throughout the novel, but I didn't understand his anger. It seemed a bit of a forced element to the book, as he just seemed angry or damaged for the sake of plot progression.

Essentially Hopper's Destiny is a solid second book in a series. Younger readers, who may not be as critical of the character portrayal or somewhat predictable nature of some of the plot elements, will certainly enjoy it. Older readers, especially those that loved Redwall and Warriors, will still continue to enjoy the series.

Personally, I am still enjoying the Mouseheart series. This is certainly a second book in a series. It didn't wow me, but it was solid and moved certain plot elements along. I'm certainly on board for book three.

I do not usually care for talking animal books (and in the same vein, FIGHTING animal books). #1 was an exception. So is #2.

There is a lot going on in this one. Not sure whether the author is really trying to say "more" or it's just a story. I guess the reader can decide. A little unsure about a couple of the twists but hopefully book #3 will make them ... necessary.

Here are some of my favorite lines. I am always a bit jealous of authors who can put words together like this.

Page 37
"Chosen One, There is still so much to be done. Have faith and be strong, for I shall come for you."

Page 51
"... first a sycophant, now a malcontent?" VOCAB LESSON ALERT!

Page 118
"Maybe all you need is a good meal and a little rest ... I always find that things have a way of getting better if you just wait 'em out. You have to put the bad stuff behind you and get on with your life."

Page 142
"If I see more, it is because I look more deeply and with greater care. And what I know is knowable by anyone who takes genuine interest. If I have any power at all, it is the ability to contemplate."

Page 199
"If you don't try ... then you've done something worse than fail. You've quit."

Page 223
"I know," Hopper muttered. "But why did I have to be the one with a destiny?" Firren laughed. "Hopper, everyone has a destiny! Yours just happens to be a little more exciting than most."

Page 224
"That's the thing about destiny, Hopper. There's no deadline, no expiration date. You just have to keep trying until you make the difference you hope to make ... until you make things turn out the way you know in your heart they should."

Page 255
"...this was the power of faith. Faith made it possible to face the unknown. Faith brought hope, and hope brought strength ... it was inspiration. And inspiration was just another word for the desire to do something good and noble and important ... and believing that you could."

Page 288
"... there are things worth fighting for, and those are the things you must protect with your whole heart."

OH! This turned out long. I just love those words so I wanted to remember them.

I love this series of books! This one is about the main character, Hopper, finding new friends. Exterminators come and destroy Atlantia. All that is left is the crumbling remains of the town. Hopper nearly dies by falling of a bridge in the so called human world. A new friend saves him. A cat of all things. He is given a temporary home by this nice cat and meets the cats friend, a dog! What is it with all these unusual friends? One of the morals in this book is no matter who you are, you can be friends with anyone. This series, yet again, is definitely my favorite. I definitely recomend this book to people who like stories about unusual friends and animals.
