I’ve missed Desiree Shapiro. It’s been a very long time since I read about her hijinks. Although this one could have been done and dusted in about 100 pages, I think. Which of the 4 friends killed Bobbie Jean? Or was it a member of the country club? Or an employee? I don’t think anyone can blame the killer for finally bumping her off. She’d fine enough terrible things to make sure someone would off her at some point.

250 pp is about right for a cozy mystery.
Setting: Manhattan & Long Island,NY
Ellen’s Aunt Desiree Shapiro is a PI with an office she
rents from a legal team.
c2003 Signet
Wow! This PI lies so much (as noted in other reviews).
This is a “one and done” for me.
Mildly amusing.

"Murder Can Rain On Your Shower" is a humorous mystery novel. But Desiree is not a very clever or dedicated private investigator. She was very easily distracted from the case and would stop work the moment someone suggested going out to dinner or she felt upset or she felt like having a bubble bath. She even did hated housework instead of work on the case! It's amazing she got anything done on the case except that most of the interviews were done over breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Desiree also overlooked obvious clues and possibilities in preference of the easiest route--focusing on "the obvious suspects." When she finally noticed a few, slight clues, she made up a whole story of how the murder could have been done, promptly decided that's how it must have been done, and then she's shocked the police don't call her a hero and immediately go out to arrest the person. Not to mention that she lied to the police and regularly lied to and manipulated people but didn't see anything wrong with it. The only reason she solved the murder was because, in my opinion, the person wanted to get caught.

That said, the characters were charming in a lying, manipulative sort of way. The details about the food, decor, and appearances were vivid if those sorts of things interest you. The mystery wasn't difficult to solve--I saw the possibility of who and how back when the murder was committed, but I figured it was too obvious. I'm still convinced it was someone else. While quite possible, I wasn't satisfied by the solution.

There was a minor amount of bad language. While the murdered woman was a seductress, there was no explicit sex described. Overall, I'd recommend this novel to people who enjoy humorous investigators but don't care so much about clever mysteries.

This story is called a mystery but it's the most boring one I' ve ever read!
I read the entire book, hoping it would get better, but it didn't.
The story is about the women who attended a bridal shower where one
of them dropped dead, shortly after beginning to eat her salad.

This is the first book that I’ve read in this series, although not the first book in the series. I found it to be a pleasant and not difficult read as well as being different as it was told by the main character as if she was talking to you.

Thumbs up for Desiree Shapiro, July 19, 2012

This review is from: Murder Can Rain on Your Shower (Mass Market Paperback)
Desiree is busy at work again as my favorite P.I. And exactly what kind of work is she involved in this time?
Well, it appears that while attending (Desiree actually helped organize a shower with the soon to be Mother-in-law of Ellen)her niece's (Ellen) shower at a very elegant Silver Oaks Country Club a murder occurs. The victim...Ellen's soon to be Aunt Bobby Jean. Almost as soon as the police, establish that this is a homicide by poison (monkshood), Desiree is asked to investigate by Mike (Ellen's fiance).

Then Desiree begins her investigation by questioning the most prominent enemies of the victim. They all turn out to have been present at the shower. But why all the animousity towards Bobby Jean? It seems that Bobby Jean was not the nicest of persons to anyone...including her friends.

While all the deducting is going on Nick (Desiree's neighbor on another floor and possible future significant other) starts to show an interest in her. Unfortunately, their dates are cancelled due to Nick's son, Derek. Nick's ex has taken off to Las Vegas after her much younger rock star boyfriend and Derek has been left with Nick.

Ellen (desiree's favorite and only niece) stays in touch with Desiree as does Mike. It's usually take out chinese food at Ellen's while keeping up with possible clues uncovered by Desiree. Even Desiree's neighbors are interested in finding out how far she's gotten with this case.

The one person who is definitely not interested is Chief Porchow.

I just so enjoy the smooth writing of this series by the author. It's such a pleasure to find a series that never lets me down. Desiree Shapiro doesn't have one great book and than a 2nd boring, dull or shallow book. This is just a great series. Desiree is a fun character who has a terrific sense of humor that she shares with me (the reader). All the characters have detailed lives that are believable, interesting and that add to the story.

A wonderful book which I highly recommend to all cozy lovers.
