Well-Designed Reinforcement Tool …

This book was reviewed as part of Amazon's Vine program which included a free copy of the book.

I found SIMPLE STEPS FOR FOURTH GRADE to be an excellent tool that parallels my daughter’s current 4th grade math and language arts curriculum.

This SIMPLE STEPS lesson book is divided quite evenly, with 136 pages devoted to math and 129 pages for language arts. I found the book to be well-organized and thorough.

MATH:

The math segment of this book is broken down into five main math category chapters with specific and comprehensive sub-lessons pertaining to each category:

1. Addition/Subtraction
2. Numbers and Place Value
3. Multiplication/Division
4. Fractions/Decimals
5. Measurements and Geometry

The step-by-step instructions and examples illustrating each lesson use colors to identify key concepts and math terms. A set of practice questions that reinforce the material follows each lesson (an answer key is at the end of the book). The start of each chapter illustrates simple concepts that serve as a refresher with increasingly more challenging subsequent lessons that incorporate accumulated concepts. The last pages of each category serve as a review “test” that covers all the material presented. A comprehensive “test” that covers all 5 categories concludes the math portion of the book. I found the pace moderate and the instructions/examples easy for my 4th grade daughter to understand. The book focuses on traditional math methods which differs slightly from the methods used in school (Common Core is not used in my state) and served quite well in reinforcing her understanding of math concepts (as well as providing an alternative source to verify her answers). The practice/exercise pages provide a decent amount of space for the student to “show” his/her work.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

The 2nd half of the book is dedicated to language arts and, like the math section, it is broken down into main categories (3) with sub-lessons pertaining to each of the categories:
1. Parts of Speech
2. Sentences
3. Usage

The language arts section utilizes the same presentation as math with key terms and concepts being assigned specific colors. I found the lessons easy to understand, quite thorough and the practice questions were quite effective. I particularly liked the book’s approach to tricky or confusing language rules that often plague adults: when to use “who” and “whom” or the difference between similes and metaphors, for example. Concluding each category is a cumulative “test/quiz” and the language arts segment ends with a comprehensive “test/quiz” that covers all three categories.

Collectively, I find SIMPLE STEPS FOR FOURTH GRADE to be extremely useful in reinforcing material being taught to my daughter in school. The material covered is wide, but the lessons are succinct and presented in a manner that is easy to digest/understand. So her younger sister can benefit from this book in a few years, my 4th grade daughter uses a separate notebook to work-up and answer all the practice questions (keeping the book intact).

The only issue I had with this lesson book is that the answer key at the back of the book is too small and required a magnifying device to read. Other than that, SIMPLE STEPS FOR FOURTH GRADE is an excellent reinforcement tool for a public school student and a nice instructional resource for home-schooling.
