There's a big surprise for the Shelter Pet A group of sato puppies has arrived! Satos are homeless dogs -- of various breeds -- from Puerto Rico. The kids will help them settle in until they are ready for adoption.

Suzannah plays with a pup named Paloma until the little dog falls asleep in her lap. It's puppy love!

That's why it's hard, the next week, when a line of people forms at the shelter to adopt the satos. Suzannah should be happy that Paloma will soon have a new home. The only problem is... she's not ready to let the dog go.

Is there any way for Paloma to get adopted without breaking Suzannah's heart?

Animal lovers will adore this third book in the irresistible Shelter Pet Squad series by Newbery Honor author Cynthia Lord.

Read this with my Second Graders for Book Club and am a new fan of the series. A sweet story about a group of friends who volunteer at a local pet shelter. Liked that the story wasn’t too predictable in who would adopt the animals and truly felt characters were relatable for young students. Love that Cynthia Lord gives activities to do at the end and ideas on how to get involved with a Pet Shelter in your area.🤓 Bonus⭐️it’s a series!!

Read this book aloud to Juliana during the summer between her 1st and 2nd grade years. It's a great beginner chapter book series about a girl, Suzannah, who does not have any pets of her own b/c she lives in an apartment that doesn't allow pets. She volunteers in a pet shelter because she loves animals. In this book, she gets to learn about and meet "sato" puppies that were found and rescued in Puerto Rico. Paloma is one of those sato puppies. I love reading this series to Juliana - she loves animals!! so perfect

Suzannah and the rest of the shelter pet squad are surprised with satos, strays from Puerto Rico. Suzannah takes a special liking to puppy Paloma.

Cute starter chapter book for kiddos who like pets. Fun activities and questions at the end of the book to make pet toys and learn more about animals and shelters.

Only think I didn’t like was weird gender dynamics, with the boys in the squad playing only with the boy puppies and naming only the boy mice. Same with the girls. And Suzannah picked out a lion and elephant toy to help the boy dogs “be brave”, which seemed like a weird detail.

This is a cute book, and it didn't matter that I started with the third in the series. My girls volunteered at the local animal shelter for years in a Saturday club and summer camps, and this book really captures what their experience was like.

Did we really have to have the boys name the boy mice and the girls name the girl mice? 😑

Anyways, this was a solid conclusion to a great series for young animal lovers. Each book is just different enough for the stories to stand strong enough on their own and prevent boredom.

Shelter Pet Squad Paloma is the third book in the Shelter Pet Squad series. Suzannah and her friends volunteer at a shelter and they are excited because six Sato puppies from Puerto Rico are about to arrive. They have a fun time learning about taking care of the puppies and give them a name. Suzannah becomes attached to the one that she names Paloma. She is glad for the chance to visit with her everyday. The only catch is that someone will soon be adopting all of the puppies, so she will not have much time to spend with her. I would recommend this for any collection looking for heartfelt stories about animals and teaching children the value of being responsible. The illustrations are nice and depict the characters and move with the story.

{My Thoughts} – First off I really want to make note of how much I hope Scholastic Press will continue this series. I enjoy that it’s about a group of children that help our at an animal shelter. It shows that children no matter their age are never too young to make a difference. It helps to show that if you put your heart into something that you can be rewarded in so many different ways. There are a lot of children out there that can’t have animals where they live and this series gives them an option of an idea of how they can be around animals and make a difference in the lives of animals. Helping out at a shelter not only is rewarding for the animal but also for the pets involved. Every living creature deserves the feeling of safety and love. This series also gives step by step instructions of how to make some of the crafts they do in the book for the animals and most are fairly inexpensive and children could easily make them and donate to their local shelter with their parents help. I will be sad if this series isn’t continued as myself and my children both enjoy it. We also help out at the local animal shelter from time to time and it’s a very rewarding experience.

{Book Review} – Suzannah is the only child in the Shelter Pet Squad that doesn’t have her own real live pet at home. At school they are doing a pet day where students can bring their pet and talk about it, bring a picture of a pet or write a story of a pet they have or wish they had. Suzannah decides to do her story on a puppy named Paloma from Puerto Rico. The puppy had traveled along way to get to the shelter she helps at and needs a home. Suzannah is hoping that by talking about the puppy to her class she may be able to help the puppy find the home it so desperately needs.

It is a given that cute little animals and children mix together so nicely. Suzannah becomes attached to Paloma and wants to be able to spend as much time with her as she can. However, she understands she can’t keep her and wants to help her find her forever home. When it is her turn to talk about the puppy at pet day she and the class get a surprise. The animal coordinator at the shelter she helps at brought the puppy for the whole class to see and spend time with.

Does the puppy find a home with one of Suzannah’s classmates? How does Suzannah handle knowing she has to let go of the puppy and let it start it’s new life with it’s new owners? There’s so much going on within the pages that it’s a fairly fast paced read. If you want to know the outcome please please read the book and the other two books in the series. They are incredibly well written and well worth the learning experience that takes place between the pages.

In the third addition to Cynthia Lord's Shelter Pet Squad series, Suzannah and her friends welcome a group of Satos - stray dogs found on the streets of Puerto Rico. Though the kids' job is to help the puppies find homes, Suzannah takes a particular liking to Paloma, and finds it difficult to let her go.

What I love about this series is how it continually introduces kids to interesting animals they may not know much about. Even though the pets in this story are dogs, they have a unique backstory that most other shelter dogs in kids' books do not have, and the reader therefore learns something new while also experiencing the comfort of familiar subject matter. As in the other books, there is also a human subplot. This time, Suzannah worries that her friends will learn she lied when she told them she had a pet at home. (In fact, the mouse is stuffed, and not a pet at all!) Her anxiety over this and the ultimate outcome are both handled realistically.

At this point, I feel like I know what this series is all about, but I keep reading because of how good the writing is, and because Suzannah is so appealing. There really isn't an over-arching plot to the series as a whole, so I'm probably not going to miss anything if I decide to stop reading, but I'm pleased that I have yet to stop being impressed.

Paloma is the third installment in Cynthia Lord’s Shelter Pet Squad series. Animal enthusiast, Suzannah joins her fellow Shelter Pet Squad members who volunteer at the local animal shelter one Saturday morning to hear a surprise: the shelter is getting six Sato puppies from Puerto Rico. The squad excitedly gets ready to meet the puppies by making dog beds and preparing the pens. After the dogs arrive, the squad members get to know the dogs as they help them adjust to the shelter. Suzannah immediately falls in love adorable Paloma, a tan chihuahua-mix puppy. Knowing that she can’t keep Paloma for herself, Suzannah sets out help find her a home. Lord’s use of easy vocabulary and clear sentences as well as an interesting and relatable storyline make this series perfect for students transitioning into chapter books and pet lovers alike. Endearing and sweet, Shelter Pet Squad inspires children to make a positive difference in their communities as well as properly care for their pets. Lord has added a fun and useful extra features section at the end of the book that includes: Fast facts about dogs, Ways you can help Shelter Animals. Caring for a pet, two pet related crafts, Shelter Pet Squad Pledge and a note from the author. Recommended for animal loving 2nd-4th graders.

Second grader Susannah falls in love with Paloma, a Sato puppy from Puerto Rico who has been rescued and flown to the United States. Although Susannah, who is a part of the Shelter Pet Squad of volunteers, wants Paloma to find a new home, she also wants to spend time with her herself. After all of the other Satos have been adopted, Susannah feels guilty and goes to great lengths to make sure Paloma gets what she needs. Ideal for second of third graders, the book is touching on many levels, including Susannah's fondness for energetic Paloma and her guilt over pretending to have a pet mouse named Whiskers. Readers who are unable to have a pet of their own will easily relate to her feelings. The author includes adorable descriptions of the animals and how humans react to them as well as suggestions for responsible pet ownership in the back matter. This solid addition to a good series would be a great book for sharing aloud with youngsters to remind them how to take care of the animals in their lives. Although they will remain cute and adorable, they also have many needs that must be considered when thinking about bringing a new animal into one's home.

Chapter book about a shelter that takes in 6 sato puppies from Puerto Rico. These are mixed breed puppies that have been rescued from the streets. The children volunteers at the shelter welcome the puppies with puppy beds they made and toy. Suzannah loves all the puppies but she really favors one named Paloma and wishes she could keep her. She struggles with the fact that Paloma will need to be adopted. It is a charming story of caring for pets and at the end gives a list of ways that kids can help animal shelters. Reading level is about 3rd grade but kids in 1-4th grade will enjoy this story.

Paloma is a mixed breed dog that came from Puerto Rico. It is Suzannah's job to help the dogs get ready to be adopted. She would hate to be separated from Paloma though. Suzannah purposely tells the people more good stuff about the other dogs so that Paloma won't be adopted.
Later, Suzannah realizes that making Paloma not get adopted is making her sad and gloomy. Will Paloma get adopted? read the book to find out, if you want to find out.
This book is cool. I really like it. You should read it if you haven't read it yet.

Suzannah volunteers at the pet shelter every Saturday. One Saturday, she and her friends find out the shelter will be receiving some new, special puppies. The kids are excited and work to make the puppies happy as they try to find new homes.
I loved that this story had lots of education without being forced.
