When the Brody family goes on a summer camping trip, they have no idea that something is about to happen that will destroy most of humankind. One day, the sun glows purple, there is lavendar lightning. Mark Brody becomes extremely ill with a bizarre disease. By morning, he is dead. Within days, the children have been murdered. Ellen Brody fears she is alone in the world, but soon discovers that there are others who have endured the same horrors. She is forced to take direction action against one of them, and then sets out to discover what is left of civilization. As other women, and a few men, come together, they learn that most of the survivors are women and most of the men have become psychotic killers. But life goes on, albeit a very different type of life than they knew. Word reaches the groups of women that the psychotic men (called Maxes) are going to join forces and kill or kidnap the remaining women, plans are made to use force to stop them. Ellen, and her closest friends, know that bringing about a war is the wrong thing to do, but no one has any other answer to the problem. When the time comes for the battle, Ellen is thrust into a role that no person on earth has ever experienced. She becomes the SHAWOMAN and her actions change the future.
