About the author

Guy Ernest Debord was a French theorist, writer, filmmaker, hypergraphist and founding member of the groups Lettrist International and Situationist International. In broad terms, Debord's theories attempted to account for the spiritually debilitating modernization of the private and public spheres of everyday life by economic forces during the post-WWII modernization of Europe. Alienation, Debord postulated, could be accounted for by the invasive forces of the 'spectacle'—"a social relation between people that is mediated by images." Central to this school of thought was the claim that alienation is more than an emotive description or an aspect of individual psychology; rather, it is a consequence of the mercantile form of social organization which has reached its climax in capitalism. Debord committed suicide, shooting himself in the heart at his property on November 30, 1994.

A very elegant little book of three essays by Guy Debord. The most interesting piece for me is his thoughts on the Watts Riots in the early 60's. Debord just cuts to the chase, but he writes like a poet who thinks of the world in very logical way. One of the great pleasures of reading Debord is his style of writing, which is both grand and almost like a reporter on the job of a hot story. Donald Nicholson-Smith did a beautiful job of translation from the French into English. Excellent!

An elegant but vacuous little book. Debord’s analysis doesn’t really hold up much at this point, utterly reliant as it is on the concept of class- and mass-comms-defined national “society.” Doesn’t have much to tell us about a social media saturated world of in which laterally defined political identifies have largely superseded class based ones rooted in national states. Plus, the well turned sophistry doesn’t do it for me any kore.

Une société qui n’est pas encore devenue homogène et qui n’est pas déterminée par elle-même, mais toujours plus par une partie d’elle-même qui se place au dessus d’elle, qui lui est extérieure, a développé un mouvement de domination de la nature qui ne s’est pas dominé lui-même.

La rivoluzione o la morte

Inconsistente e incomprensibile a larghi tratti (ma forse è un mio limite), leggere Guy Debord per me è estenuante, anche perché per lui sembra tutto chiaro e apodittico e non si spende in grandi argomentazioni. Va aggiunto poi che si tratta qui di un'operazione editoriale furba, in cui un minuscolo scritto dal titolo attuale e seducente, "Il pianeta malato", che occupa appena 11 pagine, viene accorpato ad altri due testi autonomi (non molto più lunghi, in realtà), senza nessun legame al primo, sebbene la nota introduttiva di Alice Debord cerchi di convincerci che la "diversità dei temi trattati" sia solo apparente. "L'inquinamento è oggi di moda": così si apre il testo in questione; ecco, appunto, quindi vendiamoci un libro. Aggiungi un'idea di decrescita a caso nella quarta di copertina (che non si ritrova nel testo) e il gioco è fatto. Detto ciò, le 11 pagine contengono spunti interessanti ed effettivamente attuali,

sulla produzione d'impiego in una società che permette in teoria di lavorare di meno:

La funzione ultima, confessata, essenziale dell’odierna economia sviluppata, nel mondo in cui regna il lavoro-merce che assicura tutto il potere ai suoi padroni, è la produzione d’impiego. Si è dunque ben lontani dalle idee “progressiste” del secolo precedente sulla possibile diminuzione del lavoro umano grazie alla moltiplicazione scientifica e tecnica della produzione, che dovrebbe assicurare sempre più agevolmente la soddisfazione dei bisogni precedentemente riconosciuti da tutti come reali, e senza un’alterazione fondamentale della qualità stessa dei beni che risulterebbero così disponibili.

sulla premonizione del greenwashing:

La sedicente “lotta contro l’inquinamento”, per il suo lato statuale e legislativo, creerà innanzitutto nuove specializzazioni, servizi ministeriali, lavoretti [jobs], proliferazione burocratica. E la sua efficacia sarà del tutto commisurata a tali mezzi.

e sulla necessità di cambiare il sistema per lottare credibilmente contro l'inquinamento:

Non può diventare una volontà reale, se non trasformando il sistema produttivo attuale dalle fondamenta.

I really like the concepts explored here about the attention economy and how hierarchical structures encourage us to watch the news uncritically. after the first few pages though, it just becomes a lot of references to current events at the time of writing that I don't understand
