Kayla Meadows’ life, with a wonderful husband and great career, couldn’t be more perfect. But when a routine flight into Dallas goes horribly wrong, her fate and the fate of the others she meets is left in jeopardy. Someone has set off an EMP device, shutting down the entire power grid, including communications and all motorized transportation. Chaos has ensued, and now Kayla must confront her deepest fears as she struggles to get home in an increasingly hostile environment. And it’s not only her fears that she must deal with, but the anxieties and doubts of those she suddenly finds herself responsible for. Written with unbounded intelligence and seen from a uniquely female perspective, this is a novel about pushing the boundaries of fear, adapting to life in an uncertain world, and finding faith in the face of raw ambition and power. Kayla has never truly been on her own before and now faces a nearly 200 mile trek on foot through what’s quickly becoming hostile territory. Joe and Monica, a couple thrust upon Kayla, don’t want to face up to the new reality. Mike, a teenager who was home alone when the event occurred, is looking for adventure. And Jim and his crew don’t want to rock the boat, even after they become aware of the sinister plot behind the catastrophe.
Finished with a trite and disappointingly, stupid end.
Started out pretty good, then got into bible thumping and comic book totally unrealistic, immature prose. Sorry I wasted time finishing it. What a sorry excuse for a potentially good read.
she was in a plane that was just about to land when a emp hit the whole us. the plane crashed but she got out. her ankle was hurt
after seeing no one was coming to help she started walking to dallas which was 150 miles away. if she could go 5 miles a day it would take a month and half. she took a elderly woman with her
she found a dog in a house and the dog came along with her she learned how to purify water and hide from people
a man was trying to rape her and the older woman hit him in the head with a tire iron but his gun went off and killed the older woman. she took the gun
she found a church offering food and water. the preacher wanted her to take a group of people with her. she didnt want to but she did. one of the men died in a attack at a hotel
she found FEMA and just wanted some food and water, but they wanted her to stay there in the encampment. they tried to drug her and killed her dog. she got away but the rest of her group was in there
she joined another group and convinced them to go to fema and try and get the church group out but they found a shed of bodies, 2 of them from the church group
the group got larger as they recruited more people to help escape camps. they wanted to start farms and split off into groups
they made their way to dallas airport to set off their own emp to take out the fake fema people and it worked but she was wounded. she got medical aid and met up with her husband

I was Definity unprepared for how bad this book was going to be. Geeze - the main character is either dumb, deaf or blond (I mean blind)... look around you chick - the whole airport and surrounding cities are filled with bodies, crashed planes, trains, cars, tractors and everything you can think of. People are fighting over eating out of the trash cans and all you are worried about is that the plane you were on crashed and you cant find your luggage. Do you not see this is a major disaster and not about YOU! She spends the first 150 pages of the book making a list about how she is going to sue the airline... ah, really - that is the only thing on your mind..
So, the first 150 pages she whines about how somehow the airline has not taken better care of her, then once she tires of that - she moves on to blaming God for doing this to her.
Needless to say I stopped reading at about page 200. If anyone actually gets to the end of this book - please DONT let me know how it ends, cause I cared so little for it :). My guess is she finds God, saves a bunch of people and ends up not suing the airlines after all.
If the book had introduced some dinosaurs or a large green alien was discovered then it might have been worth finishing. At the very least, if she had a German Shepard at her side I would have kept reading! :)
The plot is decent and some of the characters are well developed. The relationships between characters lacks development, leaving the book lacking in that department. Then there’s the water poisoning-people die of that. If they don’t die, they’re in bed, unable to walk or function for a while. Recovery only happens with iv fluids. So, the lead character should have died at the get go. Then there’s the starvation for the first half of the book, but no one is tired, nauseous, anxious, depressed, or passing out. Then there’s the group that lives underground who ought to be depressed, but they aren’t. And Texas doesn’t have long days and short nights. Again, interesting book but needs editing. I don’t understand how it won two awards.
Fewer grammatical errors than I’m used to so that’s good. I took off a star for how the book started, with Kayla having been told it was an EMP yet still acting like she was going to complain to the airline. Also, fish are easier to catch than the hundreds of rabbits Kayla seemed to catch. Took off another star because you took out the dog! At first, I almost stopped reading because of the “FEMA Camps” - I worked from FEMA. Most are good folks. Luckily, I was able to see that’s not where you were going with the story. I added a star back on because of the ending. I liked the little surprise at the end. I do hope Mike is okay!
Kayla. Kayla learned to have the Faith of a Mustard Seed. When an EMP strikes the United States, things go from bad to worse quickly! Kayla, one of the survivors when her flight goes down because of an EMP, learns fast on how to survive in this new situation. With her new found Faith in GOD, Kayla slowly begins to understand this new environment she finds herself. Read this thrilling and exciting adventure in the state of Texas to see how Kayla adapts and learns about survival, faith, love, and trust when things and situations turn quickly down.
OK...I realize the book is called unprepared, but geez! Author spends a LOT of time over explaining actions, makes big leaps/assumptions and the book just didn't seem to be going anywhere. Stopped at 66%. Thought it might get better. It did not. In fact I wonder why it's rated so highly. I have one question though...Why were they guarding a shed full of dead people? Did I miss something there? Would I have found out if I kept reading?
What would happen if the world stopped!? There was good building of story and characters. Kayla found she could learn to survive when world fell apart, that she is stronger than she thought. Wanting to survive and to get back to her husband, motivates her.Along way meeting friends and faith. I liked it. Good read
First of it's kind to read. Not overly religious but it's there just when it's really needed. Good characters, well developed, some of my favorites didn't make it 😣, others flourished and kept me interested. Recommend Dr. Sieffert enjoyable and extremely well edited.
Loved this story where someone totally unprepared fights until they win with lots of problems that are overcome! Plot goes crazy and character developed so well! So sorry for Camilla and Butch. Great ending with a satisfying result no matter how twisted it was to get!
Not a traditional EOTWAWKI. The story started off strong but I felt there were too many preachy elements to the story that evolved into modern day conspiracy theory. Also……. Spoiler………. ………. ……. The author killed off too many good guys AND THE dog. ( frowny face).
Wow! And I mean WOW! This is a great book, and we all are unprepared. As a nation we really do need to be more aware of what is going on around us. The faith they have is what truly got them through, as it does in our daily lives.
I could not put this book down. Starting with the first page, it got you. I guess no one thought how we would react if the world as we know it would just change in an instant and we would have to fight to get it back. A story worth reading.
In ever way bad .lousy concept the government going to imprison and punish people of faith after a EMP .main char I tot can spear kill rabbit so the Texas out back any time so never a food worry
But this one was special. This is the first time I've read this author and they was he gradually added God into the story was lovely. He didn't above it down your throat. It was gently introduced. Thank you for a wonderful book!
I was riveted and couldn't read fast enough. I've wondered off and on about prepping and I'm leaning toward doing so after reading this book. The events seem plausible and I am going to seek God's direction in future planning. I highly recommend reading this book.
Other than some continuity issues, my main reason for the rating was after chapter 31 the author implied only a particular subset of political adherence could be Christians. This was a huge distraction.
The book was good. The plot of a dark government taking over was pretty unrealistic. Also, please tell me how a husband and wife can look directly at each other several times, not recognize the other!! Not possible! I get that he has a beard, but the wife, really?
I loved it from the first chapter of was hooked . It was so good I read right through it. Just to think this could very well happen to the world. I look at peppers a whole lot different now
This was my first time reading this author. Very good storyline! It explains events and makes the character's handling of the events relatable. Highly recommended
