Triple Threat #3

Heart of Ice

Rate this book
At first glance, the crimes appear random. Arson. Theft. Fraud. Murder. But these are more than random crimes. They're moves in an increasingly deadly game. And the one element they have in common: a woman who is gorgeous, clever…and lethal.

Elizabeth Avery has a winsome smile and flawless figure, but underneath is a heart of ice. She's a master manipulator, convincing strangers to do the unthinkable. And she orchestrates it all without getting too close. Until now.

When Elizabeth ruthlessly disposes of an inquisitive young reporter, her crime catches the attention of Federal Prosecutor Allison Pierce, FBI Special Agent Nicole Hedges, and crime reporter Cassidy Shaw. They know they're dealing with a cold-blooded murderer who could strike at any time. What they don't know is that they're already on a first-name basis with the killer.

And one of them may be next on her list.

While the mystery itself, was intriguing, we were in the mind of a sociopath/psychopath and I hate hearing those sickening thoughts so I felt heavy and yucky inside while reading it.

A Quickie Review

I tell you, I've been in a Lis Wiehl craze lately.  This is the third book I've read in the past two or three weeks that was written by her.  Just like the previous Triple Threat books, this one is an enthralling and intense murder mystery; only this time, there's a femme fatale that seems like the girl next door.

Content Concerns: 17+
Though this may be published by Thomas Nelson, it probably would be too much for kids and most young teens.  Along with people being shot and/or killed--sometimes in graphic detail--there are details of a woman dealing with breast cancer and some sexual references, including a guy sketching a woman's nude form.  Even mature adults may find it scary.

Score: 4/5

If you enjoy suspense and high stakes stories, you’ll love this one. It can be read as a stand-alone but I prefer to read series books in order—in case you’re like me. :)

This is the third book in the series, something I didn't know when I chose it. I think it would benefit readers to read the others in the series first - not for the story but so you can better "bond" with the characters.

Elizabeth is fascinating and very well written. I disliked her immensely, but I couldn't take my eyes off my Kindle when she was there. I wanted to see what she would do next.

The "triple threat" all did their jobs well and were pretty realistic. Their friendship didn't get in the way of the case (I've known some books that have done that - and it becomes more about the friendship than the mystery). The problem was that I hadn't read the other novels so the relationship felt somewhat shallow to me.

Although this is put out by a Christian publisher, one of the three is very anti-religion and one is a Christian who mentions she prays every now and then. There is no Christian themes or people accepting Christ, no prayers, sermons or anything like that in the book. This could just as easily have been published by a secular publisher.

It was an interesting story the pacing was good throughout. I want to thank Thomas Nelson for providing my copy in exchange for my honest review.

This triple threat book follows the live of three women, a TV reporter, a federal prosecutor, and a FBI agent. The women have faced a lot of situations, but what they are dealing with with the cold blooded murder Elizabeth Avery. As Elizabeth leaves a trial of bodies, the women much piece together the clues in or to stop her.

I received this book from BookSneeze.com. I must say that I did not like this book. There was a lot of action in this, and I do love action, but the book was kind of boring. The plot was very predictable. I always new what was going to happen next, I could just guess and boom, I was right. I didn't anticipate in this book. You know how you read a book and you just can't wait to see what happens next, this didn't happen to me.

The characters, I didn't care for. I feel like I didn't really get to know them. There wasn't enough character development for any of the characters. I didn't connect with any of the characters and I don't like that about a book.

The book was fun and entertaining at times but it wasn't a page turner. It didn't keep my interest. But if you like mystery and murder, maybe this book is for you.

this book took what felt like forever to get through. the constant back and forth between 4-6 characters POVs was a hard thing to get past when the descriptors of who was talking were limited. after about 60% through it, it became interesting and fast-paced. I unfortunately will not find myself reading any other works by Lis or rereading this novel. It unfortunately was not my cup of tea.

Sissy was truly a scary character. She smiled while stabbing you in the back and used people for her own purposes all the time. Just makes you more aware of the people you let into your life. This was a well written book and I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I had a "Love-Hate" relationship with this book. It seems "Sissy" can twist people around her finger and make them do STUPID, unspeakable things. Some of these people are supposed to be intelligent.I have to admit, some were just misfits who could be taken in by just about anything. I am losing respect for Cassidy, the reporter. She is all about getting the story, and talks about murder victims as if they are just a dirty pile of laundry that you walk around. I find it hard to believe that her 2 friends, who are in law enforcement, share things with her that should not be shared. Also,in a situation when you clearly have the upper hand of having a weapon, why would you lay it down and jump in a pool, when you know you are not as strong a swimmer as the criminal? SHOOT the gun! Anyway, I read this in 2 sittings and found I had to finish it just to find out the twists and turns of the story.Hoping the next one,Eyes of Justice, shows a little more "smarts".

Wiehl and Henry have a knack for creating villains you wouldn't want to run across in your daily life. Even though the identity of the murderer is known early on, the motivation and methods aren't revealed until the heart-pounding ending. This novel is an exciting addition to the Triple Threat Club series.
SUMMARY: Elizabeth Avery is well-practiced at getting exactly what she wants. She's gorgeous, manipulative, and a cold-blooded killer. When she discovers that television reporter Cassidy Shaw can help her, Elizabeth spins her web of lies and draws Cassidy into her lair. Can Cassidy's friends, FBI agent Nicole and Federal prosecutor Allison, discover what is going on before it's too late?

This was a very enjoyable book. My Goodreads closed while I was writing my review, so I will keep it short this time. There were just a couple of things I did not like. 1: There was a hole in the story that would have changed the story. 2: There are some areas that were predictable. Other than these, I thought the book was very good, and I had a hard time not reading it. It did not have the language and romance that most of these books have. I was able to read it without feeling guilty about it.

That was great! I liked the story, especially the character of Elizabeth. She is terribly evil, cold and manipulative. As the title of the book, she had a "Heart of ice". Also, I liked that the lives of the "Triple Threat" were normal and conform to the reality of many people. They are not only heroines against crime, but also human.

This is the 3rd of a 4 book series. I have enjoyed every one of the Triple Threat thrillers by Lis Wiehl and plan to read more. Her murder-mysteries move along quickly and hold my interest. I also like that there is a Christian theme that runs throughout the series as the main character is a Christian. Although there is alot of violence in these stories there is no swearing or graphic sex details which I find refreshing.

So far out of the 3 books in this series I've enjoyed this one the most. It wasn't your typical case of find the bad guy and put him in jail. Instead it was a slow build up and waiting for the "bad" person to get caught. Running tangent was another case that they were working on.

Elizabeth, aka Sissy, was a very attractive woman with a trouble past as a child. She used her looks to her advantage as she basically got what she wanted. She played "The Game" in her head and people around her were like her pawns.

This book also went more into depth about Nic. (Nicole). A health scare has her beginning to open a bit more to Allison and Cassidy. An episode with her daughter also seemed to give her a new outlook on things.

What I love best about this series is how fast the pacing is in the books. Things don't overly drag on. The only problem I have is reading them back to back after (it appears the series may be over) is the repetition on things. I understand why as books take time to come out and one always needs a refresh of the characters. Overall best one out of the series to far.

They had gone to the same private school, it was their choice of career that blended them and became the triple club. The connection was Crime Cassidy covered it,Nicole investigate, Allison prosecutes them.
A young girl, who knew how to manipulate people, the scarred, the loner to do her work. She wanted someone, she had no thoughts of wrong to having someone dispose of what might be keeping them in her way. until she did the wrong person. Which caught the attention of the FBI. They didn’t know it was her, she had perfected her self so complete. Haunting that a killer might be someone you have known

This was the first book by Lis Wiehl that I have ever read, and it is officially a favorite! I loved the different plot twists, and the fact that you knew what Elizabeth was going to do before hand.

I also greatly appreciated the fact that there was more than just the main storyline of an insane woman that gets what she wants by being a master of manipulation.

I felt a distant, but also personal connection to this story, as my grandmother had breast cancer a few years ago, and that was what Nicole struggled with throughout the story. I loved watching the characters grow, and everything unfold.

Each Triple Threat novel is better than the one preceding it. This one centers on a manipulative, sociopathic female who is willing to do anything it takes -- lie, cheat, steal, even kill-- to get what she wants. And God help anyone who gets in her way.

** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED **

(One of the best things about these books is that each chapter is only a few pages long, which results in a fairly quick read.)

Fiendishly evil villain in this one, who gets a little to close to the Triple Threat Club. What I like about this series is that the books are quick reads, the cases/villains/victims change each time but the real story is the three main women and their ongoing relationship/lives. Interesting developments there.

This was more thriller/suspense rather than mystery. The sociopath antagonist was very chilling so the title was great. This one did not really highlight any of the three women like the past two. They are good friends, but the authors have not done enough to help me buy into their tight bond. Easy read- kept me reading to see if and when the antagonist was going to bring in one of the ladies.

Throughly enjoyed this read! Liz is a fantastic suspense writer and this book was no disappointment. It kept me interested the entire way through and was always difficult to put down. High suspense and an evil character is a great combination when written with care. I am ready to get another one of her thrillers!

Liz can really write. She takes the reader down a highway of emotions, is the TV anchor that trusting, is the FBI agent too concerned over her cancer, and the D.A.'s sister who has done time gonn'a mess up the plot? End comes fast and all's right with the world in Portland, Oregon.

I gave this a 3 star because I have not read the first two. I actually listened to this book on CD as I traveled. It was good, but I think I will be better after I read the first two and then re-read this. I will repost when I read it again. :-)

2.5 stars. I enjoyed the book well enough, but there wasn't really the suspense or the twists I'd hoped for. They were all given away too easily. I'm definitely going to give Wiehl another try, though.
