Christy Roberts, owner of Alfie's Bed & Breakfast, has been getting a nice flow of customers due to the Winnona Peak’s Annual Dog Show. When one of the shows participants J.W. Augustine turns up dead in his room at Alfie's Bed &Breakfast, Christy is determined to find out if this was an accident or a stealthy-murder.
With a complicated trio of possible suspects in play, each with motive, Christy, along with her two trusty Pomeranians are set to find out who is the killer. But this one could get a little hairy.
Find out what happens in book one of the Winnona Peaks Mystery!
A cute, short, quick read. It needed more development and left me a bit confused at times (the cop that wasn't a cop?). A dog photographer is murdered in Christy's B&B and she is caught in the middle of it all. I liked her. I liked some of the supects (the typical dog show insane owner which makes me think of Best in Show). I liked the premise and I did enjoy it overall but it needed some work. Will try number two though.
I had not read a book by Emily Page, so I'm very happy to have read this first book in this series. I love stories with mysteries surrounding a Bed and Breakfast, and this one did nit disappoint me! It was great getting to know Christy and her fur babies. I also loved when they gather all of the guests together in order to solve the mystery. I pictured an old movie during that scene. It was a smooth and fast read. I loved it ❤
I picked this up as a Kindle freebie and found it to be a cute story. At only 58 pages, there wasn't much room for character or plot development, which somewhat hindered the story for me. Some characters were thrust into the story with little or no introduction (the cop "investigating" for instance - did she work for the local police department? Was she a cop from somewhere else on vacation there? What? I have no idea.) and the epilogue was a little forced. Yeah, it tied up the loose ends, but it felt tacked on to the end, rather than a continuance of the story.
Overall, not a bad little book and a good start, but still needs a little work.
This is the first part of author Emily Page's "Winnona Peaks" mystery series. Main character was B&B owner Christy, or at least it seemed that way. Story was told in third person pov, and it followed several characters.
Christy is enjoying an influx of customers at her Bed & Breakfast, thanks to a local dog show. When one of the judges, JW Augustine, dies in his suite, Christy can't help but think he was murdered. The police have to wait for official cause of death, but Christy begins asking questions. She is aided in her endeavors by Greg Hinks, a retired cop who would like to get to know Christy better. They have three main suspects, all of whom JW had argued with recently. Will they get to the bottom of the mystery before the players leave town?
I am very meh about this story. The plot was not cohesive, characters were not fully dimensional, and there was no building up of clues to allow the reader to reach the same conclusion the mc did. This wasn't even interesting enough for me to hate it. As I said, just very meh. Two stars.
I loved the dog show idea, and Christy's two Poms were adorable, but a lot of the time I felt a little confused. Maybe there was just so much going on for such a short book. It was still a good mystery though. I figured out from a fairly early clue whodunit, and it was pretty sweet how Christy figured out how to prove that. She and her old friend Gregory made a great sleuthing team! My first time reading this author, but definitely not my last. :)
This is the first in the series. The main character is Christy who runs a B & B. There is a dog show in town and the people in her place are all involved in the dog show. Either a judge or to take pictures or having entered a dog in the show. When one of her renters dies, she sets out to see who did it and why. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more of her adventures.
A fun, interesting read about dog shows and the shenanigans of the dog owners coming to a small town with behind the scenes looks at what happens in the dog show world. The bed and breakfast owner, Christy, is very welcoming and capable as she helps in the discovery of the evil doer.
I think the story was too short to fully develop the plot and the characters, but I think that Christy's Bed and Breakfast has a good future. I wonder if the retired cop is going to open his coffee shop. I hope that he doesn't just sell instant! He and Christy made a good detective team.
The first chapter really drew me in and I finished in one sitting. It's a cute story with an interesting plot line that made for a fun break between serious (and long) books I'm currently reading.
I've got to say, the reviews for this novel have me stumped. It was a decent enough idea, but the execution was terrible.
Independently wealthy dog show photographer dies in a quaint B&B. A motley collection of potential suspects; the put upon secretary, the dog show diva, the rival photographer, a recently arrived to town ex big city police detective and of course, our home sleuth running the B&B she inherited from her Grandmother.
There's a random cyber fraud investigator who turns up out of nowhere and the first we see of her, she's interviewing suspects for a friend of a friend. There's no police anywhere to be seen, because the dog show wants everything kept on the down low.
To be fair, that I could forgive but the lack of editing is just the deal breaker. You "take a kettle off the stove", not "off of the stove." You can't see the look in your own eyes, unless you're looking in a mirror, the phrase is "it would be best" not "it would it be best." These are just some of the basic editing mistakes that spring to mind.
While I appreciate the effort that went into this eBook by the author, I'd recommend getting an independent 3rd party to review it, and provide a basic edit. I really think the author had a good story, but she fluffed it by rushing it to the market with obviously no editing or at worst a self-edit.
I can't say I'd invest anymore time on this series.
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. It drew me in enough to keep reading even though the way the story was told was unusual for a mystery. The suspects all had POV chapters which got you into their heads and gave you motives but just felt really weird. I had expected Christy to reveal the clues and motives much more than she did.
This is a very short mystery so there isn't much room for character development. I would have liked to learn more about Christy especially.
There were many confusing places in this book where I wasn't sure if I was reading something wrong or if there was something muddled in the story telling. Those things didn't take away from the fact that the mystery was decent to read. It was entertaining and while it wasn't amazing it wasn't terrible either.
The best characters in the book were the dogs though Christy and Mr. Binks were okay as well.
I picked this story up for free and if you like mysteries and dogs it is worth the short time it will take to read it if it is still free.
A very short read, I finished it in one sitting. A mystery encompassing a dog show and a bed and breakfast. Christy, the innkeeper needs to find the murderer, murder is not good for business, you know. Enjoyed the story line, but found numerous spelling errors. Not well edited, but still enjoyed it.
I am so glad I found the books by Emily Page. I have loved each one so far. I am always pleased when I find new authors to add to my must read list. Can't wait to see what book 2 brings.
Murder a Alfie's Bed and Breakfast! Christy Roberts runs the inn where she has guests who are participating in the town's dog show. The competition seems to be so fierce, because someone commits murder. Short story!
What happens at dog shows may not stay there. When some of the dog show personnel stay at Christy Roberts bed-n-breakfast named; Alfie after her grandfather, someone is murdered. Who can it be? A good light read!
The short story was OK. I will not read anymore of this author's work. It wasn't my style. It doesn't mean others might not enjoy how it was written. The mystery gets solved amd there is also a trace of romance in the air.
