The Right Kind of Wrong

Monroe Lockhart left Cypress Falls, Texas at eighteen and thought she’d never look back. But that plan was easier said than done with a brother in prison and his five-year-old daughter, Maisie, being raised by Monroe’s mom.

When Monroe’s mom passes away suddenly, Monroe finds herself back in a town where she never really fit in, raising a niece she doesn’t even know. And if there’s one thing that Monroe’s certain about, it’s that she has no business being a parent, even if her new next door neighbor and former high school crush, Blake Bettencourt, disagrees.

Blake is also reeling from being thrust into a life she never expected to lead. Her ex-husband cheated, got his mistress pregnant, and suddenly, Blake’s standing on the outside of a life that used to be hers.

Monroe’s not in a position to turn down help, even from someone she never expected to call a friend. But Blake keeps showing up for her, breaking down the protective walls that Monroe’s spent a lifetime building.

The lives that they’ve both been thrown into are all wrong, but they may find out that’s exactly what makes everything between them so right.

for the reader who wants a cosy read that does not skimp on the emotional support

also there's a generous amount of spice I know that's what some of you maniacs are here for

neither Monroe nor Blake are living the life they expected to live in their small town, but they end up being neighbours so it's not all bad. my favourite thing about the author's books is the advanced, comprehensive emotional support. like yes we're going to have fake marriage shenanigans or the leads running an inn together, but that's not going to stop two women from being present, attentive, and compassionate. the book takes great pains to set up that Monroe and Blake are having really an awful time in their small town and are in a very complicated emotional place. and then we get hundreds of pages of them untangling each other's traumas and talking through miscommunications with empathy and care

also, I love a romance novel that does the small town but really dives into the good and the bad of it. Blake in particular is getting the rough end after finding herself divorced from the figurative horse of a one horse town, but the book also highlights the community that she's able to find along with Monroe

also also, I really enjoyed the pacing of the book. I will always love a romance novel that takes its time, and The Right Kind of Wrong very much lets you sit in every phase of the story and Monroe and Blake's relationship

also also also, like The Pining Paradox there's a character who feels neurospicy. it's never said whether Monroe is one way or another and it's not a big Thing, but if she is meant to be neurospicy as Brynn felt neurospicy I thought it was very well done. understated and never the core focus, but the hallmarks are there. neurodivergence as character seasoning rather than neurodivergence as drama

unless this is completely off the mark in which case she's still an excellent character

a cosy, comfortable, emotionally complex read that continues the hot streak the author's been on

Monica McCallan is a go-to author for any reader looking to be immersed in a somewhat messy and extremely believable story of love and the unpredictable paths life can take. Monroe and Blake are characters who grew up in the same town, but a world apart. Monroe was quiet and artsy, she got out and became successful in the ways she dreamed, but she still wasn’t happy. Blake stayed, married her high school boyfriend with the big name and lots of money, and lived the debutante dream until it all came crashing down; only for her to realize she had never been truly happy either. The two reconnect at a time when neither has much to give, but somehow they find everything needed to be there for each other. It’s a romance book, so the reader will know how it ends, but the story of the good and the bad of small town living, and the process of slowly building a found family while falling in love will keep you hooked (never mind the many fantastic spicy scenes). This is the kind of story that generates conversations about society, from the high brow art scene to the southern pageant circuit, there is somewhere on the spectrum for everyone to carve out their own piece of happiness when they stop letting the judgements of others get in the way.

Absolutely adorable

I loved this book! Monroe is a rockstar!!! I related to her so much, having helped raise my nephews with my parents I felt for her. Blake was such a beautiful god send to Monroe’s life and they had such great chemistry. As Jesus s fan of this authors work and writing style. This one might be her best yet ❤️
