"With a well-paced plot, mounting tension, and a surprising (real) twist at the end, this is a good book." Historical Novel Society
BASED ON A TRUE STORY:
It’s December 17, 1931. Nelly Don, millionaire fashion designer, has been kidnapped. It’s no ordinary kidnapping and no ordinary rescue attempt. Before it’s over, a powerful Senator may see his downfall and a Syndicate Crime Boss will have played a major role.
"I've been a writer since age 6 when I pinned the wildly successful (in my own mind) THE DAY SNOOPY GOT MARRIED. My teacher was so impressed that she shared it with the entire school staff. Unfortunately, I never got it back!
I've written over 10 screenplays; some of which have been optioned. Hoping one will make it to the big screen some day. I envision Universal's spinning globe, with it's majestic horns announcing the opening of the film ... my film. Gives me chills.
I've written and directed a few short films, "STRINGER," about a rogue photog on the edge of a nervous breakdown, and "F-HARMONY"; a funny spin on the dating site with an unexpected twist at the end. I've written and produced a short stage play, as well as founded "two film festivals. I've also written and produced/directed three book trailers..
After reading short stories from Derek Haas' (bad-ass, big time screenwriter and producer/creator of Chicago Fire) website, aptly called "Popcorn Fiction," (where he features short stories from writers), I decided to give it a go.
I came up the idea of THE UNFINISHED by marrying 1940's Film Noir with Sci-Fi. Love the idea of taking a character out of one world and implanting them in another... known as "fish out of water" story.
My lastest release, THE ABDUCTION OF NELLY DON; is a full length novel I am so proud of. It released July 2,
Given my busy schedule, my average reading time for a novel is usually a week but I was able to read this novel in only two days. The abduction of Nelly Don is a story bursting with twists and turns. I personally love psychological thrillers but I am now adding true crime to my repertoire. Nelly Donnelly is the owner of a very successful and profitable clothing company. She didn’t suddenly stumble on her wealth; in fact, she had risen from humble origins to amass immense wealth. Nelly is ambitious, driven and determined. One example is the fact that she only took weeks to recover from giving birth just so she can go back to work at the factory. She started from the bottom, a few orders at a time, and within a year Nelly and her husband Paul had the business out of their home and into a small factory.
The story took place in the 1930s during the depression and kidnapping schemes were rampant. The story begins with the kidnapping and murder of a young man named Brook Hart. This is the type of novel that will hook you from page one. Nelly’s abduction occurred in a similar manner. She was abducted because of her wealth. Paul’s world turned upside down when he hears that his wife had been kidnapped. The notes and bloody garments provided evidence of the kidnapping. Several key people were instrumental in helping with the case. The police force, the senator, and even the crime family were involved in finding Nelly.
The book grabbed me from beginning to end, and kept me in a constant state of anticipation. The author takes her reader’s on Nelly Donnelly’s horrible nightmare. This is not just a true crime novel with boring details, Marks wrote the story with fluidity; although several characters were introduced, the pacing was right. The reader is able to spend time with each character and learn them and be part of their voyage. This was especially the case with Nelly’s driver George who was murdered at gunpoint before he was able to propose to his significant other. The author’s writing style will draw you in immediately. The scenes are descriptive and full of emotion.
The story is properly executed. Author Patrice Williams Marks is an impeccable storyteller. The narrative will not disappoint.
Let me start this review by revealing a few things about myself; I when received this ebook I agreed to give it an honest review, I abhor time pieces, and I have lived through the kidnapping (and safe return) of my oldest biological son. I started this story with a chip on my shoulder, a preconceived conclusion that I would dislike the book no matter what it was, I was wrong! I can assure you that even though this book is a "True Story", you won't get bogged down in the details. The story flows an twists when and where it should. With a manuscript jam-packed full of close calls, kidnappings, organized crime), and a do-gooder politician on a mission there is not one page of this book that isn't superb!
The Great Depression was in full swing, but the Harts were living the American Dream, until that fateful day when they weren't. A carefree handsome young man, Brooke Hart, was kidnapped. Senator Reed was called upon to help with the case, but was unsuccessful in his attempt to assist. Senator Reed didn't become discouraged, but was impassioned with determination when yet another victims name crossed his desk, Nell Donnelly.
Nell Donnelly, or Nelly, was a self-made millionaire in the 1930s. She made her fortune by creating not so everyday dresses for ordinary women. She had tapped into an untainted market and struck gold!
Not only was Nelly ahead of the pack in the fashion world, she was also ahead of her time as an employer. She employed over 1000 people, mostly women; whom she paid above-average wages, gave paid leave, provided vacation time, she assisted with paying higher education costs, and she paid for childcare. She was so loved and admired by her employees that when unions tried to come in and organize in her factory they were unsuccessful. The employees had nothing to complain about.

Reed refused to have his demands open to interpretation or debate, "Send out your men by the car loads. Use whatever means you deem necessary to find her."
***END EXCERPT***
I fell in love with Senator Reed as his character grew impatient with the ineffective police efforts surrounding the Nell Donnelly case. You just knew he would do anything for Nelly's return when he enlisted the help of two of Kansas City's most notorious crime bosses to get the job done. There was just not enough budget or manpower to solve cases like Nelly's on the up and up. Her abduction coming just before the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping, and after several other high-profile crimes, Nelly was falling thru the cracks. Senator Reed wasn't gonna let that happen!
I'd about died when Paul, Nelly's significant other, read the ransom note. His character should have known better to dismiss it. Then the torn and ravaged dress arrived, could things get any worse? What should be expected from such a dishonest unfaithful man!
This story is better then fiction! Pour yourself a drink, light up a coffin stick, and curl up with this twisted historical tale, be ready you won't be able to set it down!
***EXCERPT***
"Twenty-nine hours ago, Mrs. Nell Donnelly of the Donnelly Garment Company was abducted from our peaceful streets." There were murmurs from the swarm of people. "Nelly Don is not just another face in the crowd. Yes, she could easily be your sister, your wife, or your mother. In fact she is all of those things to her family, and one thousand employed workers as well. The Donnellys have single-handedly turned Kansas City into the thriving manufacturing center that our country has come to know. And how are they repaid?" Reed switched his approach to something a bit more personal. "David is her three-month old son. Her husband Paul is at home, taking care of David, awaiting precious word. We know these men are from outside the area and that they are linked to Brook Hart's kidnapping and murder." The crowd gasped. "All of America should insist, nay demand, in one collective voice, that the barbarous kidnappers be tracked down and brought to justice so they shall never again escape God's divine will."

About the Author
Patrice Williams Marks penned her first book in third grade; The Day Snoopy Got Married. While it didn't make the NY Times Best Seller List, it was an instant classic with the Nacca Valley Elementary School staff. From that moment forward, Patrice knew she was a writer. With a zest for travel and an insatiable appetite for all things vintage and period, Patrice uses her investigative journalism background to create authentic characters to occupy the pages of her books. Patrice has a talent for shining a light on riveting, obscure true stories from times past and generating page turners.
When Patrice Williams Marks first came across the story of Nell Donnelly back in 2013, she found the story of her kidnapping so compelling that she knew it was up to her to tell the story. Patrice had no idea that putting pen to paper would result in such a historically important or entertaining novel coming to fruition.
***EXCERPT***
Nelly cleared her throat, feeling a bit uncomfortable. "I am working diligently to put all bad thoughts and memories behind me, and that means not repeating the story ever again."
** I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review**
This book is based on a true story, and I really enjoyed reading this, and loved being thrown back in time to the 1930's. The author has done a great job at writing about this period time and I really got engrossed into the story from the get go. It does start off slow but it sets the story up, we learn all about Nelly and how she basically went from nothing to having her own clothing company. It was a fascinating read how she achieved that during the great depression. As I said this is based on a true story I loved how Patrice has weaved a story around the event that happened, and whilst I have never heard of Nelly Don after reading it I just had to google her. I am not one for reading this kind of genre but I absolutely loved this one and even recommend it to my mum who has since got it and she loved it also. If you are looking for a book to grab your interest and hold you through the the twists and turn then this is definitely the book for you.
The Abduction of Nelly Don by Parrice Williams Marks What a story this turned out to be. You see how a woman had to work and get up in the world. Though most of this deal on kidnapping, You see what it like in 1930's. It more crime and Mystery of who is creating all the mayhem.
A Senator wanted to help a close friend and son. Though when he could not help them. He get another chance. Will he do everything to find Nelly Don? You learn and get twist and surprises around every corner.
As you read, you are wondering who is it is? You will want to know why? It get you to want read until you get to last page. Though for me It only held my interest. Though it a great. I say it an 4 to a 4.5 rating.
If you are a reader of crime and / or mystery. This may be a book for you.
This is a fictionalized account of a true story - the kidnapping of Nelly Donnelly. I was unfamiliar with her story and found it fascinating. While reading this novel, I found myself googling the actual event for additional information.
For me, this book began very slowly and there was almost too much information and dialogue in the first half of the book. It was almost overwhelming and tedious. However, by the halfway point, this book really grabbed my attention and kept me engrossed until the very last page. The author did an admirable job of pulling together a complex tale into a cohesive story. I also found Nelly's story of how she created her clothing company fascinating and I wonder why her story isn't taught to our youth. She is a classic example of overcoming terrible odds to become a success through perseverance and hard work.
This was my first read by Patrice Williams Marks, but it won't be my last. I also love reading a mystery or drama and knowing that it is based on a true story. It adds an extra edge of intrigue to the characters and the situations they find themselves in.
Set in the era of speakeasies, prohibition, and the Great Depression, Nelly Don is a woman of unusual character. The story begins as Nelly is finding her place as a successful entrepreneur, and then finding her world flipped upside down by greed and deceit...
I hope you don't have much planned for the next few days, because as soon as I promised I would stop reading and go to bed, I would end up grabbing my iPad for just one more chapter...
I received this book for free thru and Early Reviewers contest on Goodreads. This story which is based on true events (although it seems some names were changed) made the reader feel as though they were back in 1930's America; when prohibition, the depression, organized crime and want to be gangsters were the order of the day. When the few who remained rich became the targets of those who were not. It is a well researched and well written book using the language of the times. As someone with an American History degree, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a true feeling of what it was like to live during this era. Kudos to Patrice Williams Marks for a great read.
This was a throughly enjoyable read. The dialogue was great, thug speak from a bygone era. All the characters well developed. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little suspense. Nicely done.
The Abduction of Nelly Don by Patrice Williams Marks is a historical fiction novel based on the real kidnapping of Nell Donnelly during the 1930s Great Depression. Nell grew up poor, but had a knack for making her own clothing. When she was old enough, she left her family home, and met and married Paul Donnelly. After making some clothing for some neighborhood friends, Nell contemplated going into business for herself. With the support of her husband, she made a business plan and got her garment company off the ground. However, one afternoon, a gang of men kidnap Nell and demand ransom for her safe return, a seemingly common practice at the time. The novel chronicles the measures the police and government go to in order to get Nell home alive.
The Abduction of Nelly Don by Patrice Williams Marks did have great potential as a historical fiction novel. It was an interesting case at the time, the kidnapping of a famous clothing maker. However, although the story was fast-paced, I did find a few editing and factual errors that drew away from my full enjoyment of the novel. However, it was fascinating to learn about such an overlooked case, as everyone relates the Great Depression to prohibition and overwhelming poverty. I found it interesting also that law enforcement and politicians got other criminals involved to find out information about Nell’s kidnapping, and how to retrieve her alive from the gang who took her. Overall, I did enjoy this novel, and probably would recommend it to someone who enjoyed thrillers.
The Abduction of Nelly Don is half real and half fiction. Patrice Williams Marks has brilliantly put together a novel for readers to remember and enjoy the life of one independent woman. A young woman who learned at an early age how to bargain and where her talents lay. She soon set herself up for a huge business in making dresses and other clothes that many would enjoy. Not only was clothes making her talent but also Nelly Don had a good heart where her workers were concerned. Never have I read anything discussing how generous an employer was to not just one but all employees. With above average salaries, healthcare and even childcare provided, Nelly Don is indeed a woman that will continue to amaze readers worldwide.
Patrice Williams Marks has beautifully woven a the story of Nelly Don's life into a highly entertaining yet inspirational piece. It makes readers wish all employers were like this amazing woman inside The Abduction of Nelly Don. Readers will go on an adventure following young Nelly as she grows into the woman all know her by...from growing up in a large family to marrying her first husband to starting her own business as well as being abducted. They say experiences changes people. Maybe, Nelly's abduction changed her. Nelly never once spoke about her abduction and lived until a ripe age of 102. I loved how Patrice Williams Marks brought history and fiction together and created a sizzling fast-paced story. A story, readers won't ever want to stop reading and will forever love. Overall, I highly recommend this novel to readers everywhere.
I was fortunate to have won this ebook via Booklikes.
I must admit that I had never heard of Nellie Don prior to reading this book. It aroused my interest enough to want to research Nellie Don. What a woman! I rarely write a blurb as to what the story is about, for fear of spoiling for others. I do recommend this book. I enjoy watching crime or the history channels on tv and I believe this would make excellent viewing on tv one day.
I love reading stories set in historic times. This one was back during the time of prohibition and mobsters. I also love true stories and this was based on an actual event and kidnapping. Having written that, I now feel it lacked something. Perhaps the characters needed to be fleshed out more. I was happy with the ending, but it was predictable. I knew what was coming in Nell's life other than the kidnapping and that part was nice. Just okay...
I have always been a big fan of true crime stories and this book was one of the very, very best. Once I started reading I absolutely couldn't stop until it was over. Also. what an unexpected and completely mind blowing conclusion. WOW. This is a definite must read.
An intriguing and exciting adventure into the life of Nelly Don and her fashions. It is an interesting cameo into the life and times of politics and societal needs of the time. The post scripts into the lives of the main characters is an added bonus.
This is a really interesting story based on a real kidnapping case. Nelly Donnelly, founder of the Nelly Don Garment Company, was kidnapped in 1931 and held for ransom. The author, Patrice Williams Marks, uses her journalism background to craft an intriguing fictional account of the abduction. Her book, and the tidbits of what happened to some of the key figures after the case, certainly make me want to know more about the real Nell Donnelly. I recommend this book for people who are interested in true crime stories and organized crime and politics in the 1930s.
I read the book last year, and that first paragraph is the review I wrote for Beanstack through my library. I have to add, though, that I keep thinking about Nelly's determination and her clever, thoughtful approach to protecting herself while in the hands of the kidnappers. I have also read more about the development of her dressmaking company; hers really is a name that women should know, because she changed how we dressed in the 20th century.
The Abduction of Nelly Don is my first introduction to Patrice Williams Marks’s work. I thought it was a pretty historical. It is not a long read, but it is full of mystery, suspense, action and adventure. I never knew what would happen in the next scenes. I had the honor to listen to the audio version of The Abduction of Nelly Don. I enjoyed the narrator’s performance. Clay Lomakyu did a wonderful job bringing this story to life. I, also, enjoyed hearing some sound effects that was added to the audio. I am giving The Abduction of Nelly Don three and a half stars. I would love to read more by Patrice Williams Marks in the future. I believe other readers who enjoy historical fiction would enjoy this one. It is definitely worth a read. I received the audio version of this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
This story gives us a glimpse of Nelly’s life from a teenager, meeting her husband Paul Donnelly, and how she started her garment business. The pace of this book was fast with no frills; meaning no extraneous copy to read and then wondering why it was even included. The characterization of the three abductors was in-depth enough to get a sense of who they were. There were two surprises at the end that were not expected. Now, I want to learn more about her for she was way ahead of her time in supporting women in the workplace by giving them fair pay and hours, childcare and education subsidies.
I enjoyed learning about this aspect of KC history and seeing some many well known names make an appearance. However, I didn’t love the writing and in doing some basic research to learn more, it appears some key facts may not be correct. I get it isn’t nonfiction but the outcome of George Blair seems to be quite different than what actually happened. I’m not sure why those kind of details were changed but it bothered me.

I was instantly captivated from the first page of reading. I shelved my other activities for a good portion of my day just to keep reading and finish the book. It was fast-moving, with fascinating characters and good flowing dialogue. I loved reading about real (aka fact-based) people and events in Kansas City in the 1930s.
A fictionalized tale of an historic event in Kansas City history. Nelly Donnelly, creative genius and co-founder of the Nelly Don clothing label created jobs, mostly for women, with good pay and great benefits ( health care, child care, and advanced educational opportunities,) This true story of her kidnapping faithfully recreates the time period in Kansas City and the bravery of Nelly herself.
I found this read frustrating. A novel based on facts, perhaps.. but A Senator from one state addressing a farmer convention in another? An abduction from CA being noted in MO. I was not thrilled. I was also unimpressed with the writing style.. simplistic. I only finished because I started it...
Fantastic telling of Nelly Don’s kidnapping. Prior to this I’d never heard of Nelly Donnelly. I’m so glad I borrowed the audio version, narrated by Clay Nomakayu. His voice absolutely fits the story. So good!
Quick read, and I love all the references to KC, some of it doesn't make sense and doesn't follow a timeline I wish it had a touch more accuracy but still a fun one.
This book is based on a true story; however, I found it frustrating in some areas because it embellished the story a bit too much for my liking.
The e-book version of the story definitely needed a better proof reader -there were quite a few typos. The tense changes within a paragraph (and sometimes within one sentence) is off-putting but the reader just has to ignore them and not let them become a nuisance.
I recommend this book with the proviso that the reader keep in mind that it is fiction even though it is based on a true story.
An excellent if a tiny bit short read, this story had a little bit of everything. There is romance, action, intrigue, and a lot of interesting characters in this story. We even get a slow building romance toward the end of the novel between Nelly and Senator Reed that leaves the story hopeful. Paul makes an interesting and conflicted character who is self-centered and mean with a very contradictory personality. In one scene he goes from lamenting his missing wife and his love for her to a woman he is cheating on his wife with, then having sex with the woman, and then lamenting his wife again.
A note, there is some graphic depictions of sexual activities in this novel. They aren't overly offensive or descriptive, but it definitely helps for people to understand that it is in there.
The important thing about this story is that it is fiction with flavorings of the real event spread throughout. It is interesting and entertaining, but it's not meant to be a documentary. It's meant to use these people to tell the story of Nelly Don and her life, but not for the nitpicky types who want perfect details. if you go into this book looking for a fictional and entertaining story with a lot of interesting scenes and different story-telling elements, then this is an excellent read!
So for those of you who have read my blog and my reviews know that without a doubt I am a HUGE book lover! I mean I have over 200 books.. #noshame ;) So you can just imagine how excited I was to get to review ‘The Abduction of Nelly Don’. Plus it’s based on a true story, who doesn’t love those? I will admit I have never heard of the story of Nelly Don prior to this book but it defiantly intrigued my curiosity! (so naturally I googled it lol). I have got to say I love reading any book that are dated back in the 1900’s-1950’s so this was a huge treat for me! Plus to be able to overcome all the obstacles she had to face is amazing, and how she got to owning her own clothing line was empowering. I refuse to go into to details because why spoil it? But I do truly recommend this book to everyone out there! It is a little slow at first but I promise it is a hook, line and sinker! Hope you enjoy!
**I was given this eBook for free by the author for my absolute 100% opinion. I was in no way coerced into saying what I said or how I feel. My opinions are my own, and I will not recommend a product to viewers if I do not like it.**

Rating: 3 stars
Review: I'm a bit torn about this book. I did not know anything about Nelly Don prior to winning this book, but I'm a sucker for thrillers. I also was intrigued about the fact that it was based on a true story. First, I think that there should be something stating that this is a fictionalized account, based on a true story. I was very confused in the beginning because I did not understand that about the book. Second, the writing is decent, but needs some work. The story is very choppy (especially at the beginning). As a result, I found it difficult to get in to the book until after I had read a few chapters. Third, I believe the editor could have done a better job. The writer has a tendency to change tenses from one sentence to the next; a habit that I found distracting. On the whole, however, I found the story to be interesting and the writing to be decent. Once Nelly is abducted, the pace of the story picks up and the I found it more interesting.
True crime isn't really my typical genre, but this showed up in my recommendations for my e-reader and it was reasonably priced so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did, as I enjoyed this.
Even though this is a fictionalized story, it is based on real events surrounding the actual abduction of Nelly Donnelly, and I found it not only an engrossing story about the kidnapping and how it turned out, but also really enjoyed how the various people involved were portrayed by the author.
This story also offers a view on an interesting point in history, with the Great Depression as a backdrop for what happens to Nelly, and a bit of the political posturing that some people used as a way to make either financial or political hay with that great tragedy for so many Americans.
Overall, this was a very fast, easy read, but it had plenty of drama, excitement, humanity [at its best and its worst] all supported - for me anyway - by the amazing, strong, smart, determined person of Nelly Donnelly, who I loved. This was a good read.
Nelly Don is an ambitious and creative woman with her own opinions and determination—that sounds like a lot of women in the 21st century, but this story takes place in the 1930s and its based on a true story.
Nelly is a successful business woman in an era where men ran the world, but she doesn’t care, her intelligence and business savvy allow her to build an empire and although her personal life isn’t ideal, it’s working for her. When she’s kidnapped, it turns everything upside down for those that know and love her and the hunt to find her becomes as intense as that of the Lindbergh baby …
Occasionally I come across a book that is impossible to put down and The Abduction of Nelly Don was one! I finished it in less than two days!
