Zane Ashford’s stint in the NYPD comes to an abrupt halt when he is injured in the line of duty. After waking up partially blind in one eye, all he wants to do is crawl into a hole, but his friends and family won’t leave him alone. Reluctantly, he lets his best friend talk him into time away on a ranch in Montana. But the moment he gets there and meets Cyrus Abrams, Zane begins to contemplate murder.
Cyrus Abrams is vulgar, ornery, stuck in his ways, and not about to change for anyone, no matter how good Zane Ashford looks in those jeans. The more they lock horns, the more Cyrus begins to see Zane in a whole new light. But Cyrus has a past, one that left him in big trouble and more broken than he cares to admit—a past no one told Zane about. Cyrus fears that when Zane finds out, everything will come to a screeching halt.
Remmy Duchene is a Canadian-hockey-watching-baseball-playing kind of guy. He loves walking in the rain and bugging his friends about his latest story ideas. Remmy believes that true love comes in all shapes, sizes, and sexualities. He is always saying "I'd rather see two gay people in love get married than two straight people that hate each other."
The blurb for this book reads like a checklist of awesome:
- Ex-cop? Check. - Cowboy? Check. - Fish out of water? Check. - Comfort/Healing? Check. - Age gap? Check. - MCs that rub each other the wrong way until they discover rubbing each other the right way is far more fun? CHECK. DOUBLE CHECK. - EYE PATCH?! That's a great big fat 'check' too!
See what I'm talking about?! SO. MUCH. WIN!
So I went ahead and pre-ordered this book, even though I hadn't read anything by either of these authors before. *disappointed sigh* I should have known better.
The writing was bad, friends. I mean, baaaaaaaaad. The dialogue was bad, the inner dialogue was worse, and the exposition was dropped into the story with so little finesse, it caused me to physically cringe away from my Kindle. For instance, in a single breath, I was informed that Cy used to be married to a gangster who taught him how to lie, cheat and steal (and yet was still the love of his life and no other man will ever measure up). Said gangster was murdered in front of him and Cy was wrongly convicted of the crime, spending 5 years behind bars before Ren got him out.
See? I couldn't even explain all that in a single sentence!
I feel like that is the sort of information you dole out over the course of a book; you don't just plop it awkwardly onto the page and walk away. I understand wanting to make unique, complex, memorable characters, but Ty and ZaneCy and Zane went from characters to caricatures at the speed of light and I couldn't foresee them recovering from that.
Of course, this is just one of MANY examples of clunky writing, so I cut my losses and DNF'd at 15%. I'll probably be avoiding both of these authors in the future. :(
Wounded NYPD officer Zane “Ash” Ashford goes to Montana to heal, get some peace and quiet and concentrate on something other than his future in law enforcement on the ranch owned by the sexy, older Cyrus Abrams, friend of his best friend Ren. The two men are opposites in every way. Cy is an ornery, crass, loner, still mourning the death of his lover Danny who was killed five years ago. Cy spent some time in prison after being wrongly accused of the killing and even though Danny was a criminal, Cy knows nobody could ever replace him in his heart so one-nighters it is. Zane is planning to concentrate on his health and his drawing and photography. The two men quickly butt heads, and though they both have a physical attraction, Zane is not someone who does casual sex.
The story started off well. Zane is an immediately likeable character in a bad situation. His whole life is changed in one moment. Although he has great support from his sister, his best friend and his work partner, he needs to come to terms with losing most of the sight in one eye and possibly never being able to work on the streets again. Time away from the city seems like the perfect thing. We get points of view from both men but still, Cy was a bit harder for me to connect with. He comes off as a real jerk and has a way of talking that seems to always come out as obnoxious. They have a strong physical attraction and though Cy is so hung up on his dead lover, he is finally feeling something for someone else almost from the moment they meet. Zane lays down the law pretty early on that he is looking for a husband not a quickie, Cy lets it be known that he isn’t that kind of man, but soon that all goes out the window.
After they first hook up, they fall out again and there is a lot of back and forth. Cy starts thinking maybe he can do long term with Zane, but Zane is thinking maybe Cy is just saying it to get him back in bed. The relationship runs hot and cold for the entire story. The big problem is, these two never seem to discuss much beyond sex and how they need to talk more, for a good part of the story. The few times they actually do talk, I did see a spark of something between them, but even by the end of the book, I’m still not sure what they have in common besides the physical. I wanted to learn more about Cy and Danny so I could understand why the man had such a hold on Cy, but we don’t get much more than the surface facts of their history.
For all the waffling and dragging their feet, and Cy’s vows never to love another man again, the relationship moves surprisingly fast. There is some drama at the end as the two men find out secrets the other has been hiding, but their reactions each came off as somewhat childish and overly dramatic. It was nice to see that Cy did step up and take a risk for Zane at the end. I applaud the authors for the diversity of the characters in this interracial romance. African-American, Native American, mixed race, are all represented as either main or supporting characters. This is definitely a May-December romance, but we never are told just how old Cy was. He is constantly referred to as an old man, he has gray hair and sometimes has a hard time keeping up with Zane (whose age appears to be late 20s early 30s), but knowing that many M/M writers portray 45 as “old” I could only guess he is somewhere between late 40’s to 60.
One last thing I wanted to mention was the sex. Not the sex that is in the book which works well, but the sex that isn’t. Twice, where I expected a sex scene that would really add to feeling the connection between Cy and Zane, there was an abrupt fade to black. The first time is after they had sex. There is a big misunderstanding, then they talk and decide to give a relationship a real try. There is a heated kiss and the final lines of the chapter Cy thinks, “Time to show his lover he meant business and it wasn’t just lip service. And it would be the bed, not the dang couch in the guesthouse.” The next chapter opens up with Zane on a phone call. Just a few chapters later the men go on their first date, they can’t even get through dinner, they want each other so bad. Cy has planned to romance Zane, make love under the stars in the truck bed, there’s a little dancing under the stars, a striptease, some foreplay and then, cut to Zane on the phone. We find out later that this was a pivotal scene as Cyrus says “the night we made love under the stars… everything changed for the better, Ash. You made me believe in love again.” Unfortunately we missed out on that scene and another opportunity to really see the two connect.
The story ends with more than a HFN but not quite HEA. I got the impression that this is the first of a series since there was plenty of hints dropped and future story left open for the main and secondary characters, including the murder case Zane’s partner Michael has been working on, which coincides with the time of Danny’s murder and Ren’s recognizing that he might not be as straight as he thought thanks to Cy’s sexy ranch hand Brian.
Wounded Hearts is by two new-to-me authors. I liked the blurb and the cover so I thought I would try it out. It started out ok; A little cheesy in places, perhaps, but in line for a solid 3 stars.
However, the back and forth wishy-washy feelings got to me. Zane couldn’t make up his mind if he was staying or leaving and they both assumed, presumed, and let their tempers flare at the littlest of things. And then instead of talking, they had sex. Ninety percent of their relationship was based on sex. Not to mention the short, short time frame that their feelings sprung from. By the third time Zane packed his bags, I was done.
Combined with nitpicky things like Zelda supposedly being 5 and in school but they pack a stroller for her? She also sometimes talked like she was three plus they treated her like a toddler at times; Cyrus carried big, beefy, Zane around like he was a little girl; and they kept calling Cyrus old, though from my figuring he couldn’t have been more than 50 (probably more like 40) and they said he was only 10 years older than Zane. It got annoying.
I did like the premise, and as I said, I did enjoy the first part well enough. It just got to be too much in the end. If you like hot tempers, lots of cowboy talk, lots of sex, and a cute kid who visits, you might like this book.
Entertaining collaboration by Remmy Duchene and BL Morticia. Want more of this new series. I loved Cyrus, just a delightful character. He and Zane are just crazy good together. A lovable supporting cast Renford, Cecily and Brian. Zelda and Woofer brought the sweetness! Just a beautiful young man and an older gorgeous cowboy that get so wound up together they keep pushing aside the important conversations. Watch out for the mud wrestling!!
The blurb was better than the book itself and I feel that's a constant problem with Remmy Duchene's books. I got it because it ticked all my boxes as far as what I liked to read. But the content was really insufferable. The dialogue was the worst part of it. I was going to suffer through and try and finish it, but there was just too much bad and hardly any good.
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ e💋e basta purtroppo.
DNF @ 20% I actually hesitated before buying this book because I usually don't like books by this author but decided to give it a chance based on the blurb. I should have gone with my instincts, 20% is all I could read. I didn't feel a connection between the characters, the dialogues were awful. I just couldn't get into it
A story about a cop and a cowboy with angst, sweet-hot sex and an interesting premise sounded perfect for me. But, it turned out to be not so much.
Zane is a man whose whole world got turned up-side down in an instant. Everything he thought he was is thrown into question when he’s injured on the job and he flees to the country for some much-needed downtime.
Cyrus knows all about having your world torn apart. It’s turned him cynical and all he sees in other men is a one night stand.
I really wanted to love these characters. Men who are bent from the harshness of life but not broken and I wanted to watch them find their way to each other so they could heal.
I struggled with it from the beginning though. There just seemed to be no smooth flow at all. The dialogue feels stunted and clunky throughout the whole book for me and it threw me right off. It was like trying to read while driving down a gravel road. You feel bumped around and distracted from the story the authors were trying to tell.
The plot-line itself is interesting. I wanted to know more about Cyrus and his past relationship and I would have loved to see more interaction between Zane and his sister and niece. They both came across as good men who found themselves being controlled by events that they had very little control over.
The side characters were a mixed bag. I never did quite get a bead on Renford. He was a good friend to both men and I would have liked to have gotten to know him better. Zane’s sister Cecily came across as a little arrogant but also as someone who loves her brother a lot.
Brian came across as almost a caricature than a real character. I think he was supposed to be there for comic elements but I honestly just found him irritating and winced whenever he entered the scene.
I mostly just had a hard time dealing with the back-and-forth between the characters. Neither one could make up their mind about where they wanted things to go and maybe they needed to have more conversations and less sex to work things out. I know this is a romance novel, but really, talking can be sexy too!
In the end I’m give this story a 3 heart rating because I think the story itself is enough to keep most people satisfied and while it didn’t live up to it’s potential for me, it’s a good “rainy afternoon, curled up on the couch” read that will appeal to many.

I'm nearly a third of the way into Wounded Hearts: Sometimes when I'm not liking a book, I go and read all the reviews to see if it gets better. Apparently, it doesn't.
Truly dreadful writing. Good first draft, but needed someone to push them for consistency, saving things for later, depth. Surprising, because the editors at Dreamspinner Press usually provide that.
It reads like a nanowrimo novel, in that the first chapter (for each character) had enough there for a whole other novel. It's written like "what happens next" instead of "how is this character developing" or even "what's the point?"
ThreeandHalfStars Zane (Slick) is a NYPD cop who was hurt on the job. Cyrus (Country) is an ornery old cuss who lives in Montana hidden away from everyone after living a not so innocent life in his younger years. Zane is convinced by his best friend Renford to go to Montana and stay at Cy’s ranch, who also is a friend of Renfords. Cy doesn’t want anyone on his ranch but because it was Ren asking he agrees. Zane and Cy do not get off to a good start. They are always ticking each other off and saying stuff to upset the other. This book had potential to be really great. The scenes with Zane and his niece Zelda were amazing and so sweet. Brian was a great secondary character and I hope he actually gets his own book and hooks up with Renford. But there was just something about Zane and Cy that didn’t click for me. They each wanted something different but they were sexually attacked to each other. Cy gives in and decides to give things a go but it just seemed too rushed and too forced. It was like one minute they were snapping at each other and the next professing undying love. I didn’t hate the book, it was ok, I just think a lot of the back and forth could have been cut out and more focus on building a relationship would have been better. Plus we never heard what happened with Zane helping Corey with his music, maybe there will be a book two? If so, I would read it because like I said, I loved Brian and hope he gets his happy ever after.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
This book had all the right pieces: a hot police officer who was injured in the line of duty, a stuck in his ways older rancher, a dog so cute that you are ready to go get yourself a puppy, a little girl who wraps your heart around her little finger, supportive friends and family who just want the best for each other, and two men who have to learn to heal – one physically, the other emotionally. There was so much potential with this book; unfortunately, the blurb on the back cover was more intriguing than the story itself.
I hate to criticize any author’s work because I know they pour their heart and soul into a book. To be fair, this was a fairly decent read, it just didn’t work for me. I want a book that reaches out and grabs me within the first few chapters. Initially, I thought this was going to be one of those books. The story opened on a high note with Zane, a police officer who was gravely injured in the line of duty, learning that he may not ever be a police officer again due to his loss of sight in one eye. His best friend since childhood, Renford, urges Zane to go to his friend’s place in Montana to recover. Then we meet Cyrus…
I loved this book, I'd first seen this on and authors event and I'm glad I didn't take notice of reviews cause its fantastic. I loved the characters of Zane and Cyrus and the others in this. The two characters reminded me of two bull ants fighting but don't give into their feelings. I'm hopping there's a sequel for Renfords story. Zane wakes up in hospital with half his sight then he remembered he was a cop who been shot by a bad guy. His friend Ren suggested he recuperate at his friend place in Montana to heal. Cyrus had his farm with his ex who was deceased but still a ghost to him. jailed for his murder and then freed his a bit jaded and vowed not to love again... yah famous last words..lol Cyrus's brash words puts them at odds when they meet but theirs a distinctive sizzle between them.. Love it.
