Anders van Apeldoorn has only ever been in love with one Leighton Caldwell III, the African-American mayor of the city where they met, fell in love while in university, and got married when it became legal in 2005. With Anders’s support, Leighton is the first openly gay married mayor the city has ever had, and he is also the most popular. But those sacrifices have come at a cost for Anders, who was content to be an elementary school teacher married to a successful prosecutor. And three years into Leighton’s term, Anders wants to go back to their former life.
When Anders meets Ron Goldberg, the father of a favored former student, Anders learns something that he’s never known about him. And when some very unsettling news about Leighton comes to light, Anders finds comfort and solace in Ron’s arms. Soon Anders is faced with a tough go back to his husband or live the life he’s always dreamed of, but with a different man.
When D. W. Marchwell is not teaching future generations the wonders of science, he can usually be found hiking, writing, riding horses, trying new recipes, or searching for and lovingly restoring discarded antique furniture. A goofy and incurable romantic, D.W. admits that his stories are inspired by actual events and has a soft spot for those where boy not only meets boy but also turns out to be boy's soul mate. After almost fifteen years of working his way across Canada, D.W has finally found the perfect place to live at the foot of the Canadian Rockies. He still can't believe how lucky he is, and, as his grandmother taught him, counts his blessings every day.
Whoever wants to read this book, perhaps shouldn't read my opinion of it. First of, there is cheating. Not generally a huge problem for me, so I read this in record time. The writing therefore must have been very good and compelling.
Anders and Leighton, just as the blurb said, are together for 25 years and so far Anders is quite happy with his life, still very much in love with his husband, although he doesn't care much for his political ambitions. For several years now he feels like he always comes second after the important job of the 'first openly gay mayor' (the author mentioned this several times, for me it got quite repetitive). Anyway, at some point in the developing story, Anders learns that Leighton was cheating, not only once or twice, nope for an entire year now, with the same guy. When confronted, he admitted the whole thing, still declaring his love for Anders. Yeah, that didn't work well.
In the meantime Anders met the parent already mentioned in the blurb.
So far so - not so - good. What happened then left me rather flabbergasted. First Ron, the parent, and Anders wanted to develop a friendship. Rather suddenly Ron declared his love (?!), even with their backstory it felt more like insta-love for me. Then Ron insists on a platonic friendship until Anders might be able to decide with whom he wants to stay. Still, so far so good. Anders and Leighton decided to give their marriage another try and then, well then there happened what I really didn't get. Although Anders admits he is still in love with the cheating husband and he 'might love Ron soon' - well he starts having an affair with him. ????
I couldn't follow Anders reasoning, his actions and at that time honestly none of the others as well. Near the end there were a couple of time jumps that didn't help as well and the epilogue didn't make any sense at all.
I was left thoroughly disappointed at the end.
2 stars because the writing got me to finish this concoction.

Oh,God,let this book be good...'cause it has all the right ingredients - mature men, politics, love triangle...
What the heck - I'm sold...And so is one copy of the book.
...after reading it...
3.5 stars...
Well...uhm...I'm confused. I'm not confused by the book itself, but by my reaction to it. I devoured it - I was literaly glued to my tablet and I finished it in one sitting. And by all means,I should not have - I didn't particularly like neither of the main characters, there's cheating involved,Ron was just too perfect (and I hate those,I truly do)...
BUT,there must be some reason why I couldn't put down this book. Was it the writing,or the insanely hot sex scenes,or was it the very essence of this story, which is to keep reader guessing who Will Anders choose in the end? I don't know,I really don't...it was probably the last one the most. But nevertheless,I enjoyed,I did. And not to give any spoilers, but when I reached the end,I just smiled and thought "Good one, author, good one" which is to say the author keeps you guessing until the very end.
So,can I recommend this book? I don't know...many readers will be repelled by cheating,as I am too,but I suppose here I wasn't bothered by it because I didn't care for neither of MCs,I just cared for the story itself,I wanted to see in which direction will author take it.
Something was really wrong with the main storyline in this book. I simply don't get meaning of a "cheating" here, if you are happily married. The reasoning of love is way to mixed up here. Both Leighton and Anders cheated, still loved one another, but ended having a divorce. What kind of a romance is that? Sure I rather saw Anders and Ron together, but still their romance between "cheating" was wrong.
That is a wishful or maybe a fairy tail story plot. In reality nobody would go back to his husband if he would be unfaithful for whole year long. Even so it was interesting story plot.
