Long relegated to supporting roles on the dinner plate, veggies are finally headlining the show. In Veggie Food they star in nearly 200 delectable recipes, covering every cooking style and occasion--from starters to main dishes, from picnic food to casseroles to baked goods.
Great- my mom found it at Big Lots and got it for me. Best feature: beautiful photos of each dish. I've made about 10 dishes from it and they were all excellent.
This might be a great cookbook for a chef or an experienced home cook who wants some inventive ideas for vegetable dishes. It just wasn't my thing. It's not great for vegan food (a lot of recipes have cheese or butter or something) and even though I am not quite a vegan, I do prefer to cook that way. It's also not great for people who don't know a whole lot about cooking or who don't have a huge amount of time to spend. There are lots of great full-color pictures, but the book also omits some big stuff, like overall estimated cooking times for each dish (which I always double anyway, as it takes me forever to prepare vegetables). There's not much about the philosophy of the book, nor is there much in the way of additional things like measuring charts, ingredient explanations, etc. Some ingredients can be found at supermarkets or maybe Whole Foods or someplace like that, but other ingredients seem exotic even for someone living near various specialty stores. So, nice pics and interesting recipes, but not so useful for amateurs, vegans, or those with a limited amount of time. I think it would be a helpful book for chefs, especially.
