What would you do if you found out that your entire marriage was based on a lie, and your seemingly perfect husband was actually a money hungry psychopath with a dark and twisted past? One phone call from her husband's mistress was all it took to unravel Annabelle Montague's life, sending her on a dangerous journey of fear, paranoia, and unshakable nightmares. In order to protect herself from Evan's violent threats, including an attempt to extort her money, Annabelle is forced to leave her charming Virginia estate. She travels to the Outer Banks of North Carolina; the last place her ex-husband would think to look for her. Although she has not spoken to him years, she turns to Cole Cross for help. Cole owns an oceanfront beach house and several rental properties on the Outer Banks, and he is generous enough to provide Annabelle with a cottage to serve as her temporary refuge. Once Annabelle reunites with Cole, her old high school flame who possesses the looks of a Greek God, nothing can extinguish the fiery passion that they harbor for one another; not even the malevolent stalker that waits in the shadows. As two detectives work tirelessly to put Evan Montague in prison, Annabelle fears that her ex-husband may find her before the police are able to apprehend him. The last time they spoke, Evan vowed to kill her if she didn't pay up, and there wasn't a chance in hell of Annabelle giving in to his demands.

Shadows of Deception

Annabelle thought her life was great with her husband Evan. So it was unexpected when she received a call from Claire an ex work buddy claiming that she had an affair with Evan. Annabelle told even to move out and she was done. After an ugly year of divorce stuff, she thought she was through with even until she woke up with him standing over her with a knife wanting all of her money. When she called the cops instead she fled to outer banks to see her childhood love Cole. Could she move on and be happy with Cole? Or would Evan make sure she would never be able to? Great read

How would it feel when you find out that the man you were married to is not who you thought he was? That he had a side you didn't know? That's what Annabelle was about to discover. The Shadow of Deception is a suspense thriller with a touch of romance. The characters, main and supporting are interesting and developed. Ms. Carter has a flair for suspense, evident in this book and The Black Shadow. It's a page turner, and there's always something happening to keep me glued to the book.

A worthy purchase.

An interesting read that takes readers into the life of Annabelle and her husband, Evan, who is not quite the man Annabelle always dreamed of sweeping her off her feet. Instead Evan is a money hungry a manipulator who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. This book is an intriguing read and one that reminds me of so many people I know who are in abusive relationships and trying to find a way out. The author did a great job with this psychological thriller.

Exhilarating

Things are not always what they seem or what we believe them to be. There is a price to be paid when the things for which we hope prove to be lies. Deceit is a dangerous game ... and sometimes something as heartbreaking as an affair is just the tip of a monstrous iceberg yet to be revealed. Carter presents readers with a puzzle that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

Kept me Entertained

This was a fun beach read! I enjoyed the plot and my favorite character is Cole. I related to him and his easy-going ways. There were some issues that kept it from being a 5-star, but I'm glad I read it and would make the same choice again.

Recommended read!

Another book I read because of great ratings. The nicest thing about it was that there were no glaring editing errors.
