Lance Keimig, one of the premier experts on night photography, has put together a comprehensive reference that will show you ways to capture images you never thought possible. This new edition of Night Photography presents the practical techniques of shooting at night alongside theory and history, illustrated with clear, concise examples, and charts and stunning images. From urban night photography to photographing the landscape by starlight or moonlight, from painting your subject with light to creating a subject with light, this book provides a complete guide to digital night photography and light painting.
Good review of night photo concepts but the final chapter gets a little long in the tooth with biographies of different light painters...felt like it was a slog to get through.the astro chapter was nice though.
In general, light painting art is highly dynamic, changeable and dependant upon a myriad of constantly changing factors. It’s so unpredictable and personalized that any attempts to put it into some kind of outline of the theory, in my opinion, are always doomed to failure. Picking up this book, I was skeptical – how can scientific and exact terms describe an art in which images can not be exactly reproduced even by the artist who originated them? I was wrong, and I gladly admit to my mistake – Lance Keimig does not teach readers the art of light painting, but gently and accurately points in the right direction, leaving to readers a wide corridor for their own experiments. Making my light paintings, I used to trust the creative inspiration more than the advices from the outside, however, reading the Keimig’s book, I found a lot helpful information for me. Most importantly, now I know – the future of art photography is inextricably linked with the concept of long exposure and light painting! Do you want a backstage pass to the future?!
