The Greek mythology part of the book was my favorite. I'm not really into the whole Egyptian mythology, however that part was interesting to say the least. I recommend reading this book especially if you are going to read Iliad by Homer.
Myths interest me quite a bit and I make it a point to read as many books as I can on them. This book, sadly, fell short of my expectations. Phillips is not very clear when talking of different myths and gods and heroes in my opinion. Also since I have a rudimentary knowledge of all these myths, they didn't really surprise me a lot. I was hoping for more tbh.
If you know nothing about myths and you are just starting with it, this book might be helpful. Otherwise don't spend a lot of time on it. Oh also! I realised that Phillips has written separate books on each myth so I'm probably going to read those and then reconsider my judgement. Lol
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was hard to stop reading! The author skillfully summarized many of the popular and not-so-popular myths. I also liked how he covered Greek, Egyptian, Norse mythology. I never knew that the Cinderella fairy tale was based on Egyptian myth. I also saw how many of the Greek myths involving Perseus inspired Rick Riordan to create his popular series. We definitely got a lot of our stories from ancient myths. Valhalla sounds like a wild place; first everybody kills each other and then they come back to life to feast together every day. Awesome!
Hey guys,so I finished Mythology by Martin R Phillips in just a few hours I believe. I loved reading about some of the various variations in regards to the scattered portrayal of Greek, Egyptian and Norse mythology. It was very easy to read, it wasn't dry. Wouldn't have been anyway since I like mythology.. But for someone who needs info for like a history class or something this would be a voluble resource that one could actu read without being bored to death. Bonus, it is also a real source. Yeah, sadly citing a Rick Riordan book in a report does not bode well. Therefore, Phillips book is perfect! School acceptable and kinda humorous. But don't quote me on that, not entirely a hundred percent sure about the school thing. Anyway, the main reason I wanted to read this was because I thought it would expose me to more Greek, Egyptian, and Norse myths, and it kinda did. But, it was kinda the same aspects I've heard before. I'll tell ya, Riordan truly does some hefty research before writing his books.. Nevertheless, Phillips book is great for someone who just wants a broad overview of those types of mythology without it being just words on a page. Phillips makes it seem fun, dazzling and real. He applies it to modern day elements. Always g9tta love that. I know he has other b9oks, I think one about Rome, but I'd have to look it up. Any questions?
I read the Egyptian section in advance of reading some fictional history novel. This is a great primer and quick read. The author makes it digestible and not too academic, even though his depth of knowledge is clear.
This isn't a book of you want in-depth stories for each myth. He gives a good synopsis of key myths though.
I really enjoyed this book, it was very detailed. Learning about the three mythologies was great. I loved how detailed the author was with each mythologies.
