Ten years ago three friends set out to play a simple game of Ghost in the Graveyard. The three children knew that they should not be in the graveyard this late at night, especially on Halloween. The twins Lisa, Louise Grady and Ari West were always up to something. When one of the twins mysteriously disappears that night, her sister and her best friend never recovered from that tragic event. Ari West, must find out what really happened that night in the graveyard, ten years ago. Ari's family believes something is trying to possess her. Her mother goes to see a priest, to see what can be done. Will Ari learn what really happened that night or will her friends spirit be lost forever! I really enjoyed this novella and would highly recommend it. It is the type of story to read on a cold October night.

Wow-I really enjoyed this book. Being a 'short' novel it is a fast read. I could have done it in one setting, but it took me two. It was easy to read with lots of twists in the book. I couldn't wait to get to the end. Hope to read more from this author. Highly recommend to others.

I received the book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

This is a novella, short and sweet.
Though this makes a perfect Halloween story, its excellent anytime of the year as a good ole ghost story. Short as this story was I was totally drawn in. The author did a great job of building characters and the story in such a small amount of pages. It has a surprising ending that I didn't see coming which was great.
Basic synopsis is this....Ten years ago, three girls play a game in a cemetery on Halloween night called, "Ghosts in the Graveyard." One of the girls disappears, and for 10 years the other two live with the hurt and are haunted by never knowing what happened to the girl. The girls go back to the town they left. Separately and with different intents. What happens surprised me totally.
I give this 4 stars. Would love to have read this in a full book format.
This is a first read. I won this book on Goodreads in exchange for my honest opinion.

I wasn't sure what to think of this book when I received it. However, I ended up reading it cover to cover in one day. And I really enjoyed it! For me, it was a surprise ending to a strange book.

I have read lots of other similar stories, but this one kept me interested from the first page to the last.

I had really high hopes for this book. I really liked the concept of this story, but I think that it could have been written much better. It was pretty difficult for me to read this novel, as there was a large amounts of errors (the author addressed the wrong character a few times during the novel). I understand it is an arc, so it isn't the finished/polished edition of the novel, but, I think that the editors should have picked up on that.

The book overall was very short, and I got confused at the ending of the novel. It sort of sorted itself out in the end, but, it was still quite frustrating. The story definitely did move at too quickly of a pace (even for a short novel). The novel is in the horror genre, but, I didn't really get the scary vibe while reading.

Overall, I can understand why some people loved this book, because it definitely had potential. I'm so grateful for having the opportunity to read this novel, I just think that it should be tweaked a little bit :/

As horror tales go, this was quite good. I didn't think at first I would care for it, but something kept me reading from the start to the gruesome finish! I can only conclude I was enjoying it. The research seems to have been well done, and there is a bit of a surprise at the end. I cannot say more, lest it spoil the story for those who have yet to read it!

A short time ago, I received an autographed copy of this book from the author, Robert Ropars, as part of the Goodreads “first reads” giveaway program. The giveaway synopsis and target demographic were somewhat vague, so I have no discrepancies with admitting that my entering the giveaway was more so out of curiosity than sincere interest.

This book, in of itself, seems to be constructed in such a way that it sets its readers up with certain expectations, only to defy them later on. From the moment that I received the book and gave it my usual once-over, I had developed a few, less than flattering, preconceptions. The chapter titles and writing style were somewhat inconsistent. The font was larger than usual and the spaces between lines were generous, as is common with children’s books. Some of the sentence structure even seemed to be chaotic and awkward in ways that would make a literary enthusiast (or someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder) cringe or throw their hands up in exasperation. Simply looking at the book and its structure, and being the natural-born cynic that I am, my expectations were exceedingly low before I even finished reading the first page, let alone the first chapter. What a mistake. Once I opened myself up to the story, it ended up being a rather engaging and enjoyable read, which I completed in one sitting.

Somewhere along the way, amidst my cynical note-taking, Ropars slapped me across the face. (Figuratively, of course. Although, I imagine that my cynical note-taking probably warranted a literal smack.) The writing became increasingly visually descriptive and engaging, and even the language seamlessly crossed the line of what the M.P.A.A. (Motion Picture Association of America) would have considered “acceptable” for a PG 13 movie (as a comparison). Before I had realized it, the subtle inconsistencies in style and structure had withered away, as if they were only incorporated for the sole purpose of subtly deceiving me early on.

"Subtle deception". Those two words summarize everything about this story, how it’s written, and even the way that the book physically looks. At a passing glance, everything appears to be reliably simple and straightforward. But, there are subtle inconsistencies and chaotic quirks, difficult to pinpoint, that create such a low-grade feeling of unease and suspicion that one can’t be entirely sure if they are justified at first. Instead, the formal acknowledgement and truth of these suspicions is only entirely revealed in hindsight.

Although a perceptive mind may dissect "Ghosts in the Graveyard" and piece together its trail of clues, discovering its truths long before its due time in the story (and I challenge you to do so), I will not indulge in revealing specifics. I only caution you that nothing is quite as it first appears, so you should never judge a book by its cover.

If this assessment leaves you with questions, I ensure you that the only way to answer them in entirety is by picking up a copy of "Ghosts in the Graveyard" and seeing just what I mean for yourself. Everything will become clear to you in time.

*Notes:

1.) In sincerity, I would have given this book a score of 3.5, but it isn't a viable option and I have a tendency to round up.

2.) If you are severely bothered by grammatical or syntax errors, this isn't the book for you. They are a prominent "theme" of sorts, which are adequately used to simulate the chaos and anxiety that characters experience.

3.) If you make a habit out of reading screenplays, you've probably noticed that this sort of seems like a hybrid of a screenplay and a novel. This fact sort of explains the last point mentioned, along with some other aspects that you might find taxing, if you don't read screenplays. Once again, if this doesn't seem like your cup of tea, avoid the book.

4.) The book focuses on wrapping up mysteries from a more human perspective, so if you are expecting full-blown exorcisms, heads spinning around 360 degrees, and other stereotypical paranormal extremes, look somewhere else.

I won a paperback copy of “Ghosts in the Graveyard” by Robert Ropars, on Goodreads.com and am posting an honest review. I gave it a rating of 1 star.

The author’s front cover photo was excellent. Any hopes I had of discovering a new talented writer quickly faded when I began reading the book. I found the writing amateurish, with too much awkward sentence structure. One glaring example (pages 7-8): “Now exposed, she saw the cleanly etched words for the first time since she had stood with family and friends around the empty plot ten years ago.” Really? Was she exposed—bare naked—or was the top of the flat gravestone exposed, after she had brushed away some debris?

As a proofreader for a weekly smalltown newspaper, I can’t help but critique everything I read, spotting errors and wondering how they ever made it into print. After reading the first few pages, I inserted my bookmark and retrieved the red-ink pen I use when proofreading. I restarted the book, marking every error I found. The numerous mistakes killed any chance I had of enjoying the book. When I was finished, I totaled up the number of errors that a competent proofreader should have caught. I’d marked 127 errors, with about 100 of those being simple punctuation errors. (Failure to use a required comma accounted for most of those 100.)

Most of the other errors were a result of sloppy writing and incompetent editing/proofreading. I’ll list a few examples below.

On the Contents page, chapters 2,4,6, and 8 state “Halloween 2003.” Yet, those same four chapter titles throughout the book all state “Halloween 2004.” The current events in the book take place 10 years after the disappearance of a young girl. On page 8, her gravestone is dated 1990-2004, so obviously the 2003 date on the Contents page is wrong. How could this glaring error be overlooked?

Chapter titles 3-11 in the book are done in ALL CAPITALS. Yet, for chapters 1-2, only the first letter of each word is capitalized. Again, a result of inattention to detail. It's something the proofreader should have spotted.

On page 65, second paragraph, Ari’s name appears when it obviously should be Lisa’s.

On page 146, the References/Resources page, item 1 refers to a translation of a German transcript. I couldn’t find a passage marked with the 1 anywhere in the book.

I noticed that 6 of the 9 previous ratings were 5 stars. Unbelievable! Have these people ever read anything above the comic book level? Are there any books they’d rate lower than 5 stars? If so, I hope I’m never exposed to them.

I’ve read several thousand books, and have never before seen anything remotely like this statement found on the book’s Preface page: “This book is licensed for your personal enjoyment only. This book may not be re-sold or given away to other people. If you would like to share this book with another person, please purchase an additional copy for each person you share it with.”

So, when I die, this book must be placed in my coffin, if I’ve forgotten to toss it in the recycle bin? That’s a horrible thought, way more scary than the book itself. Just imagine, being trapped for all eternity in a casket with this book as your only reading material! Hopefully, the mortician will forget to install a light source.

If you should encounter this book, enjoy the front cover. Under no circumstances, open the book and be exposed to the contents. I suspect Mr. Ropars’s other books are no better than this wretched effort.

My one-word summary of this book: ABYSMAL!

I won this book in a Goodreads.com giveaway.

Growing up in suburban Cook County, Illinois, during the late 60s and 70s, we always played outside, except for when the weather was bad. Then I was inside reading a book, or watching a Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan movie.

But when we were outside, we would play games like Red Rover, Red Rover; Kick the Can, and many more, including Ghost in the Graveyard. Now, you're probably wondering how do you play Ghost in the Graveyard. It's simple: one person is the cop, everyone else is a ghost. The cop closes his eyes and counts to 100. If he finds a ghost and tags them, they become a human and help the cop, unless they get tag by a ghost. The idea of the game is where there is more on one side than the other and the other side cannot win. Or is it?

Robert Ropars spins a unique story in "Ghosts in the Graveyard." "Ghosts" is about three girls, two of them are twins, who sneak into a graveyard late at night to play the game. Tragedy strikes one of them, and the other two pay for it dearly later on in life.

Ropars does his research for this book, because he denotes this in his references/resources. The story is well written and well developed, as well as his characters. The setting is believable and imaginable. His sense of determination is well spoken in the story and I can highly recommend this book.

However, the only thing that is keeping me from giving this book five stars, is the fact that the text of the book is left justified, instead of full justified. For me, this is an issue as all the other books that I have read, is full justification.

I have never seen this done before and I really don't recommend it for any upcoming authors.

This autographed copy came to me courtesy of Goodreads

In honesty, I'm struggling with this review.
This book looks like just the sort of read I enjoy....& to some extent I did like it - just not enough!
Three young girls playing & one disappears from a graveyard, then, years later, there's the subsequent "haunting" of one of them - seems like a good basis for a story but for me it didn't quite come together. I found the writing style very stilted, with some of the sentences being too simplistic.

The chapter "Possession" featuring the Priest, I found particularly unconvincing. It seemed it was written with the sole intention of giving the author the opportunity to mention how he'd resourced his information (& with regard to the references where the hell was the first one? I've looked & looked & found no trace!)

I'm often found to be complaining about stories being "padded" out but this is a short novel & maybe it could benefit from some! But I did read it all & I must have been engrossed enough as I read it pretty much flat out in a couple of hours.

Final verdict - I didn't love it & I didn't hate, I can't really say more than that.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and was pretty excited to get it. It's a nice short read, which is exactly what I needed

I will say there are some cosmetic issues with the book: repetitive phrasing, too instead of two, etc. They were a little distracting in a few places and, for me at least, broke the suspense of the story some of the time.

But overall this is a really interesting story - it was just spooky enough without going over the top and it managed to not be too obvious about the mystery part of the plot. I'd like to see the story fleshed out to a novel length. I think there's a lot of intriguing story lines, unanswered questions, and enough suspense that it could still work well at the length and depth of a novel.

This was a nice book to read on a quiet afternoon when I wanted a bit of a fright but also a clear conclusion to the story.

I received this book via goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book but.... I felt the story was too short.. the character of the priest was not in depth enough and I just felt that all in all the characters could have been more involved and the story although really enjoyable could have been explored in more depth.
Very abrupt ending i felt a little too short for me personally although i would recommend it as very good book to read on a flight or on holiday if you want a quick easy read and you like a ghost story.

I really enjoyed this book. Information was given to you at just the right time to make you keep reading to find out “what happens next.” It was creepy, but still had puzzle elements to keep you busy trying to figure out what was actually happening. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys horror, the supernatural, murder mysteries, or thrillers. I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaway.

I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. Quite interesting and a far more entertaining plot than that of The Conjuring or Paranormal Activity and such. The Exorcist was a much better fit for the use of back-story for this book. I found the plot moved along quickly but efficiently for its size. The catch towards the end was slightly confusing but understood after a few quick back reads. I enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I received this as part of a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. I really enjoyed this book, it reminded me of a game I used to play when I was a kid! Good twist at the end, but I did feel it was a bit too short. Yes there were a few grammatical errors, but I didn't let that get in the way of enjoying the story. All in all, a good read.
