Like the first Europeans to arrive in the New World, the aliens carried viruses, one of which mutates after contact with a terrestrial virus. The resultant plague makes humans into zombies and turns the aliens into the horrifying Xenomortis.
Seventeen-year-old Miles lives with others in relative safety in an isolated Texas town. Beating back the odd zombie attack and avoiding the Xenomortis is the new normal. But now a new threat has arisen, and when it destroys his community, Miles and his group must face the mayhem of the outside world as they battle to save what's left of humanity –– and kill as many zombies as possible while they're at it.
Mortis is a 31,000 word novella, and serves as an introduction into the world of The Mortis Desolation. Subsequent books in the series will be full length novels at 50,000+ words.

“Mortis (The Mortis Desolation, Book One)” by Logan Rutherford was a most interesting read. While it has elements of a dystopian piece it also has many elements of a post-apocalyptic piece. Knowing there is a very fine line between distinguishing the two I had to do some thinking and reflecting on past reads and a bit of remembering back to high school English literature days…when the teacher would ask you to identify whether a story was “man vs. man” or “man vs. nature”? This read was more like man vs. man vs. zombie vs alien vs. man, and not so much man vs. nature. As the term dystopian is incredibly vague and subjective, I’ve decided to say this read is dystopian post-apocalyptic. I love a when a book makes you “think” and “wonder”. I also like a book that, knowing it’s a part of a series, I knew halfway through that I was going to invest in the next book in the series, “Retaliation (The Mortis Desolation Book Two)”. Original and unusual are two word that I think best describe the characters and the story-line. I found the idea of the zombies being a result of some alien virus opposed to being bit a very interesting premises. This is my first read by Logan, but I’m more than excited to say I’m so looking forward to reading more of his work.
Synopsis (from back cover): The aliens inadvertently turned Earth into hell.
I loved the story it was a good combination of zombie fiction and alien fiction. The author has created strong characters that anyone could identify with!
*Was given an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review*
This is one action packed read and the beginning sets the tone perfectly! Miles's life is changing, starting with losing someone he dearly cares about. After that, everything goes down hill for him. New and inexplicable things are showing up all the while a fearful gang is coming into town, stirring things up even more. I truly enjoyed this, I was hooked from the beginning, didn't want to put it down! I needed answers!
Everything happens so quickly, it isn't hard to get lost in the story! Throughout I was sitting on the edge of my seat and the spider ink creatures brought chills to my spine! I truly enjoyed that twist coming into the story more than Miles sure did. There's a couple of twists in here that I didn't see coming so I'm dying to learn more about them! Especially the cliffhanger at the end! Yes, there's a cliffhanger.....Throughout I was wondering when we were going to see any aliens, the ones that came to earth in the first place, and of course it happens right at the end, ugh! Why?!
Overall- if you love action packed, zombie reads then this one is for you! The action is nonstop and I was glued to my iPad because of it. The story was told well, even with some small editing problems, it was great! I'm dying for the sequel!
For a young writer the author shows more restraint in the use of foul language than many authors well past his age. The most recurring word is the "s" word or variations thereof. Still not necessary but again, considering the current predilection for much worse, I was somewhat impressed. The story itself was nicely done- you are thrown into action very quickly and, like the protagonist, barely given a chance to catch your breath. A few too many problems thrown in too quickly for my taste but it does not hurt the narrative. I would be on the fence on continuing the series were the language barrier, while better than others recently read, not too difficult to overcome. My resources are best spent elsewhere.
First time I have read a book by this author. Different than most zombie stories. I could not put it down so read it in one day. Good writing and story plot. Looking forward for the next one!
Mortis is a fun and surprising novella introduction to a scary zombie world with aliens and crazy monsters. Logan Rutherford did a great job writing realistic characters dealing with the insanity of a desolate world.
I found this on my Kindle when I was looking for something quick to read. It was fast-paced and entertaining, but I probably won't be continuing the series. It felt like so many other zombie/alien novels I've read before. There wasn't anything drawing to this specific one.
