The author took an interesting stance on a zombie outbreak, making it a unique story. I tried to like this novella, but there were a few elements I felt were problematic. The narrative contained a lot of slang and was written in present tense rather than past tense. Although the concept was interesting and the main woman well-written, I didn't like the main woman. Her take on dealing with the infected was immature and outright dangerous. She was genuinely miserable and unlikeable. I actually didn't care what happened to her. Everything that happened around her, she brought on herself. The concept of the "brute" didn't make any sense. He put a lot of thought and effort into doing the bad things he did, but his reason for doing them was improbable. The ending, although interesting, basically proved my assessment of the main woman. Maybe it was meant to be bitter irony. The author has potential to write an engaging story and obviously has a lot of imagination. I hope he continues to write and improve his talent. Writing is like a fine wine; it only improves with age.
I read a lot of free zombie books but I didn't like this one. The concept was fine, having a treatment to make your zombie relatives able to live at home with you until a cure is found. However it was the way the book was put together that I had issues with.
The sentence structure feels short and abrupt with no emotive description. It feels like a lot of sharp telling and not much descriptive show. It is very disjointed, jumping back and forward in time without giving the reader a clue what is past and what is present, which makes it a pretty confused narrative.
There is little in the way of emotional character development. I mean, we get briefly shown why Charlie does this work but it lacked depth so I wasn't really caring about her family, or feeling any real connection to her. She is doing something highly dangerous but has the attitude that those who disagree with her work or who question it are basically morons. I find her unpleasant, bitchy and not very sympathetic.
The beginning was okay, but since the middle it got worse. I didn't enjoy the writing style and there were some jumps in action that didn't make much sense, in a way it was written. The ending was creepy and bizzare, but not in a bad sense. Overall I believe it had potential to be much better.
