This is a beautiful poignant look at the way of life on the prairie. Sure its dated, our machines are bigger, we have bigger farms, but its a deep look into the way of life when you are attached directly to the land and up to your neck in nature's whims. There are some pictures that are heartbreakingly beautiful. You see a way of life that still exists in the quieter corners of our country, quiet, dwindling corners.
A beautiful look into the simple lives of the Hammer family in northwestern Illinois. While the book is now a bit dated when viewed in a strictly temporal sense, it’s incredibly timeless at the same time. The simple values of hard work and loyalty shine through as a beacon today. The only nitpick I have with the book is that the printing doesn’t do justice to the fine photographs of Mr. Lieberman. I would love to see some of the silver gelatin prints of the photos featured. I’m sure they’d be nothing short of spectacular. Even with the printing as it is, the reader can sense the dedication of Mr. Lieberman to document the life and the land in Scales Mound. Woven together with the wonderful memories of the Hammer family, this is a delightful read that is both impossible to put down and something that the reader will want to take his or her time with. Highly recommended!
I loved this book but then I am very prejudiced as it is both the era and the area where I grew up. I think even if I didn't though it would still be a book I would gravitate to as it is a magical world. I wish everyone could have experienced that type of childhood.
