A deft exploration of the subjugation and exploitation of women in early civilizations, The Gorge recounts the adventures, trials, bravery, and sacrifice of four girls struggling to understand their place in a world that undervalues their skills, their dreams, and their abilities. Together, they will prove themselves the equals of any warriors, triumph over their enemies, and learn to defend themselves both morally and intellectually. With a little help from the Others, they might just change the world. The People have walked the land since time began, migrating as the seasons changed. They do not plant crops, like the Lowlanders, nor do they pillage and plunder like the vicious Raiders. Micaela is of the People, one of four orphaned girls within the clan. All four eagerly anticipate the annual winter migration, but first they must undergo a rite of passage. The Breeding is an ancient ceremony, vital to the continued existence of the tribe. It’s also the one area where young women have any semblance of worth. But The Breeding has unexpected consequences for the four girls, leaving them ostracized from their clan. To survive, the four need to draw upon resources and strength they never knew existed. By doing so, they may just change their society—presuming they don’t fall prey to Raiders, the harsh desert, or their own people first.
I enjoyed this book very much. I was looking for something different than my usual fare and this certainly was that. I enjoyed the characters and the subtle blending of the Jah into the story, without making it blatant. A bit of mystery. And that not everything turned out perfectly was a delightful experience. I guess the best compliment I can give is that I’m going to get the next book in the series!
There is a mystery that is not openly told, but you will start seeing the hints and think you know what is going on. However, you will not be totally sure and only at the end will you know what the reality is. I enjoyed this so much and can't wait to read the continuing story.
I enjoy prehistoric novels. This one was definitely different. Mainly women struggling to get rights in a man's world. Some of the names were hard to pronounce i think early man would have names with one or two syllables not one like (Cuidightheach) anyway I gave the book 3 1\2 Stars it is worth reading.
Liked this book a lot after it got going. Was slow to start, but ended as a real page turner. Once I figured out this was a science experiment I really got into the book and enjoyed it a great desl!!
