The Slaver's Apprentice is a dark tale of murder, slavery, morality, and humanity. You can tell that Bryant is a professional historian who knows his facts. The captain and the boatswain in this novel are two of the most despicable characters that I've ever read. I had a visceral reaction to these pungently cruel characters. The main character, Malachai, is young and naive, but a glimpse of what humanity can be. He is not without his own moral failures, but as a student of the school of hard knocks, his personal growth is admirable. When he has the opportunity to better himself, he still chooses to help those around him. This book is not lighthearted. It is infuriating and sad. It leaves you hopeful, but more aware of the realities of the past that are often shied away from.
