To enter Urthforge is to be promised glory and purpose. To survive it is to learn that behind the empire's gilded gates waits a darkness hungry enough to devour the world.
Ember an Echoist from the coastal village of Oakhaven, can hear the emotions and memories imprinted on stone, metal, and bone. Every ruin screams; every relic mourns. After losing her father and aunt, she's left defenseless in a realm where the powerless are easily crushed. Refusing to wait for fate to destroy her, Ember volunteers for conscription-a desperate attempt to seize control of her life.
But once the wagon doors slam shut, she realizes she's the only recruit who entered willingly. Six conscripts from across the empire are dragged toward Urthforge, a volcanic academy rising from a storm-torn sea. There, they must endure lethal training, ruthless politics, and the Marking Ceremony, where each cadet binds their soul to a primeval guardian-wyverns, amphitheres, and aralez with immense elemental power. Failure means ruin.
Ember's greatest threat, however, is a weapon forged by the empire, disciplined, detached, and dangerous. During a violent clash, a forbidden heartbond ignites between them, fusing their souls and marking their skin with radiant sigils. The academy masters immediately isolate and test them, pushing their volatile connection toward collapse. Yet beneath the hostility, a slow, fierce devotion begins to grow.
As trials escalate, the recruits discover Urthforge is built on a lie. Tremors shake the volcanic foundation, echoes whisper warnings, and something ancient and malevolent stirs in the deep. The academy isn't training them for war-it's preparing them for something far worse.
To survive, the six conscripts must become a found family, master their unstable powers, and confront the awakening nightmare threatening to tear their world apart.
I devoured Urthforge by Erika Christoffersen in just three days on Kindle, and honestly, I would have finished it faster if life hadn't kept getting in the way. This is everything I want in a dark fantasy: a richly built world, high stakes, dangerous magic, found family, and a romance that is completely character-driven. Ember and Kross stole my heart. Their relationship isn't instant or effortless. It grows through fear, trust, sacrifice, and understanding, making every emotional moment hit that much harder. The forbidden heartbond between them had me hooked from the start. Ember is a heroine easy to root for, carrying grief and determination in equal measure, while Kross is the kind of guarded, dangerous character who slowly reveals layers you can't help but love. Their journey kept me turning pages late into the night. The setting of Urthforge Academy is dark, brutal, and fascinating. Between the deadly training, soul-bound guardians, political intrigue, and the sinister secrets hidden beneath the academy, there was never a dull moment. Every revelation made me need to know what happened next. If you love Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, or A Shadow in the Embers, Hungar games and divergent all in one. I highly recommend giving this book a chance. It delivers action, mystery, emotional depth, and a romance that feels earned. By the time I reached the final pages, I was desperate for more. I cannot wait to dive into The Trials of the Heartbound. If dark fantasy with compelling characters and unforgettable relationships is your thing, don't sleep on Urthforge. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An absolute page-turner and one of my favorite reads of the year.
