The Princes in the Tower: A Medieval Mystery

by Tristan Clark

The recent discovery of the body of Richard III under a Leicestershire has turned the spotlight back on to one of his alleged crimes, and one of the history's enduring mysteries: the disappearance of the 'Princes in the Tower'. With the death of Richard's older brother, Edward IV, the crown passed to Edward's young son, Edward V. Since the young Edward was just 12 years old, his uncle Richard was nominated as the young king's Protector. However, within a few weeks, Edward was incarcerated in the Tower of London, along with his younger brother; they soon disappeared from public view, and their uncle Richard took the crown as Richard III.

The fate of the two young princes has puzzled historians ever since. Did Richard order their execution in order to seize the crown for himself? Was he really capable of murdering his two young nephews in cold blood? Or is there another explanation - perhaps one of Richard's rivals ordered the killings, in order to undermine their uncle.

This very short history provides an insight into one of the greatest mysteries of British history, examining an era that continues to fascinate historians up to the present day.

The Very Short History series gives the reader a clear, concise, and very short, account of the people and events that have shaped world history. Each book provides an entertaining and engaging narrative, allowing the reader to master the subject in the shortest time possible.
