According to her mother, she fell in love with books even before she could read and was always content when she had a book in her hands. It didn’t surprise anyone when she decided that she wanted to be a writer, but she was encouraged to pursue “a real job” first.
So she did—she became a lawyer. Two years of practicing law taught her a lot about the world—and reinforced her determination to become a writer. Because in fiction, she could promise a happy ending!
Thankfully, she had already met and married a wonderful man to inspire her fictional heroes. And when she was on maternity leave after the birth of their first son, he encouraged her to take a romance writing course at the local community college. It was while enrolled in this class that she completed her first (still unpublished) manuscript.
Three more manuscripts and another baby followed. And then, in June 2002, she finally got the call from Susan Litman—an editorial assistant and contest judge—offering to buy the manuscript she’d submitted to RWA’s Golden Heart® contest as “From This Moment.” This story was re-titled McIver’s Mission and released by Silhouette Intimate Moments in May 2003.
3 Stars ~ Joel is an ex-cop turned private investigator and he and his partner have been hired to find their client's sister. Arden was nine when her aunt took her away from her mother but her baby half-sister Rheanne was only two and Rheanne's father wouldn't allow his daughter to be taken away too. Instead they offered the baby out for adoption for a fee. Now 22 years later, Arden wants to know what became of her sister.
Riane has a full life, as the daughter of a diplomat and her mother a U.S. Senator, she's never lacked for anything. In the fall, she'll be joining her father's law firm, but in the meantime she's devoting all her spare time to her pet project, a camp for under-privileged and abused children. At the charity fund-raiser, Raine's eyes meets those of a stranger across the grounded ballroom. Intrigued, Raine approaches him, little does she know that he is about to change her world forever. Their attraction is instant, and even though Joel knows he needs to keep his hands off the Senator's daughter, he finds he can't push her away. Meeting Raine in person, Joel is more than certain that she's his client's sister.
I've never read a book written by Brenda Harlen and it's been awhile since I read a Silhouette Intimate Moments (now Romantic Suspense). This is a longer format than I've been used to reading, and unlike Harlequin Intrigues where the mystery plays the primary role, in Intimate Moments the romance is primary. They mystery around the identity of baby Rheanne was easily solved but Ms. Harlen had Raine's parents away on a cruise, which put the mystery on the back burner and allowed the romance to step up. Joel has trouble with the social class differences while Raine has trouble with trust after a bad experience in college. All of course works out.
