RV Electrical Safety written by Mike Sokol, the author of the popular No~Shock~Zone blog about electrical safety. Mike has taken his 40+ years of experience with AC power, and written a book about electricity that nearly anyone can understand. Covers the basics of Voltage, Amperage, Wattage and Grounding, with additional chapters on RV Hot-Skin testing, GFCI operation, portable generator hookups and troubleshooting RV electrical systems.
This book has one purpose, to protect RVers from situations that could shock or kill them. The author feels those situations are quite common, citing his informal poll that 20% of RVers have been shocked by their RV's. To that purpose, I thought the basic information about electricity was pretty well presented, using the common water tank and hose analogies. I knew all that stuff as it applies to house wiring, but what I was looking for was how electricity in an RV and a campground is different, and I think he covers that pretty well.
One caveat: Almost everything in this book can be found for free on the author's web site: noshockzone.org. What you get in the book is an easily readable all-in-one-place presentation. What you don't get is the scores of comments and the author's responses on the web site which add a lot of information.
This book teaches the basics of electricity and how to use testers to verify that everything in your RV is working in the safest way. It gives very good basic information and can be extremely helpful to anybody that doesn’t have a formal education in the matter. Highly recommended.
Liked the analogies and diagrams. I need to reread and practice in order to develop my skill. Appreciated the straightforward emphasis on safety and the ‘why behind the what’
There is life saving knowledge in this book. Mike does a great job of explaining and making it simple to understand. This is a must read for all RV'ers
A must read for RVers. An educational heads up on do's, don'ts, and how-to's. Handy to know an electrical engineer who could help answer questions as I read.
An easy to read explanation of a complex issue. A continuing source of reference. For a novice like me the does not talk over my head and I have gained valuable information. I will keep this information readily at hand.
