A solid edition to this series!! I've really missed these characters and this story so it was great to come back and read volume 16!
I adore our new character Lightening and am interest to see how he develops through out his series. Yukio's story is really different right now and is absolutely captivating me. Rin and Shiemi have developed so much as characters and I'm excited to see how much more they will grow in the next volumes.
Lots happening in this one--stuff with Bon, stuff with Yukio, stuff with Rin and Shiemi... Its not exactly action-packed, but the plot's definitely moving forward!
We're setting up for the next arc, but for now let's check in on the actual schooling of the cram school to become an exorcist. Which meister is everyone choosing? Lightning is supposed to be involved in the school now, how is that gonna work? How are our characters going to get stronger for oncoming threats? Who's going to end up dating who??? So many questions. I love watching Yukio develop, it's fascinating. Dude is becoming more of a rival character as he goes on and is taking some pretty drastic steps towards trying to get stronger so he can match up to Rin's full-blown blue flame powers.
The series continues its cooldown while setting up the stage for the next longer arc. We are, again, spending a little more time in the academy itself which makes for good playoff between the characters.
However, I do wish the series returns a bit more to its gothic-ish roots.
Yukio visits Shura in the hospital to discuss the current situation and to explain about Shima being a double agent. A tired, overworked Yukio doesn’t trust either Mephisto or Shima, but for the present there is nothing to be done about that. Shura tells him that Mephisto has given her tickets for everyone to an ultra bath in Southern Cross, and tells a reluctant Yukio he needs it as much or more than anyone else. So everyone heads out for some down time, including the acknowledged spy in their midst.
The girls share some time in the bath, while the boys goof around in their bath. When Shima shows up, they think he’s acting weird, until he reveals the reason for his behavior – namely, that Izumo, Shiemi, and Shura are right next door, and they are naked! His stated intentions of seeing them naked produces an unexpected declaration from Rin.
Back at home, Rin finds an abandoned kotatsu with a missing blanket, and dreams of being able to have people over for a hot pot party! Concerned about his brother, he questions Yukio, who blows him off, as always. At the Vatican, Mephisto is attending a meeting at True Cross Headquarters concerning recent develops. The name Igor Niehaus is brought up, the former instructor who was suspended after an attack on Rin and whose current whereabouts are unknown. Accused by Arthur Angel of being a traitor, Mephisto convinces them that he has their best interests at heart, and is working to keep the Gehenna gate closed. Lightning privately convinces Angel to have him assigned to the Japan Branch of True Cross, so he can look into matters.
To the Exwires dismay, Yukio informs them that they will be taking exorcist certification exam sooner than expected. They must each resubmit their desired meisters ahead of time. Rin discusses the Yukio situation with Shiemi, but she is as much in the dark concerning his behavior as Rin is. Meanwhile, Yukio has his own agenda, one that brings him little sleep, brought on by unexpected observations of himself. Lightning shows up at True Cross as an instructor, and takes Suguro on as his acolyte/servant. The other Exwires can’t believe the highly alpha Suguro acting like such a toady, but Suguro insists Lightning is his mentor and he wishes to learn from him. He hopes that if he does well, Lightning will take him on as an apprentice.
Shiemi is uncertain which meister she wishes to study for, so returns home to consult with her mother, only to have an unexpected discussion. On a routine mission, Shiemi and RIn find themselves trapped together, and things are …. well, said… that could have interesting consequences.
The action doesn’t stop in this volume of Blue Exorcist. Never a dull moment. It’s interesting to watch Shima’s return to the school and see how the Exwires relate to him, especially Suguro and Konekomaru. Being a double agent must be tricky. How can either side fully trust him, not knowing for sure where his true loyalties lie since he has to be convincing to all of them? We see more into what Yukio is up to, and his doubts about himself as well as the potentially harmful way he is dealing with it. Sooner or later, I think he needs to tell Rin what’s going on, and Mephisto too. Despite being odd, I suspect there is more good than bad in Mephisto. A love triangle is forming, but I think it’s based on erroneous information and is more a comedy of errors than anything else. Can’t wait to see what happens.
I felt like this installment was a mess and a half. First there was that pointless and not really funny bath scene in the beginning, and then there just didn't seem to be much of a point to the rest of the volume. Like, I get Kato's gearing up for something big and that the plot will move forward again, but after the last couple volumes I felt that this one was a bit of a let down. I found some scenes rushed and/or lacking, and other scenes to be completely unnecessary. Honestly, I just don't know if I'll continue the series after this one. I'm starting to quickly lose interest, which is a shame, because it was such a neat concept.
Some of this was just filler and regrouping after the previous arc, I feel - some good and some meh. Definitely the hot springs was just fanservice and unnecessary, and even the last mission with Rin and Shiemi was largely pointless besides them talking about which twin Shiemi might love Lightning is an interesting character, and I'm glad we're seeing more of him! The way he short-forms his summonings and death arias is really interesting, I hope Bon can learn from him!
Also let's talk about Yukio because uhhhhhhhHHHHHH.
There was so much happening in this volume, how can I possibly cover it all.
I will say though, that I absolutley loved all the brotherly love and concern between Rin and Yukio. Those two are the main reason that I am here. I just love them so much. Rin, of course, has noticed that his brother has been acting strange lately and he asks him if he's eating properly and if anything is wrong he should tell him. But sadly, Yukio is so thick headed and stubborn that he refuses to rely on anyone, not even his older twin brother. It seems he views needing help as a weakness. He wants to get stronger and find out what is happening with his eyes so desperately, my precious boy has driven himself to extreme measures. Putting his life on the literal line. He's spiraling down quickly and it's easy to see how this will further culminate in the decision he takes later on from the spoilers I have seen.
Meanwhile, the Illuminati threat continues to grow stronger and more prominent. Each of the world's government branches of the True Cross are on high alert as an increase in demonic activity keeps increasing. There are not many exorcists so they are becoming overwhelmed with such high levels of activity. As a result, the Exorcist Certification Exam has been moved up to happen in around a month since the True Cross desperately needs more exorcists. Furthermore, they worry that this increase in demonic activity will cause more people to be able to see demons, practically creating a real hell on Earth. The Illuminati as stated has become the biggest threat the world and the True Cross has seen yet.
All the while, Lightning has arrived at the cram school to help in teaching and to try and weed out any traitors that may be lurking around. He shows incredible abilities as an exorcist as such Bon begs to become his apprentice and actor a test, Lightninh accepts. However, I do find Lightning a but suspicious and don't completely trust him. For some reason he kept asking that if Bon wanted that badly to become his apprentice than all he had to do was give him Rin's sword. Of course, Bon would never hand it over, but still even if it is some level of interest or to study it, I don't know, I find it odd and sus.
Afterwards, there are strong scenes between Rin and Shiemi. It's obvious that Rin really likes Shiemi, however, despite how much she worries about both Rin and Yukio, it seems she only views them as friends she really cares about. To be honest, that chapter with them, while yes they are really cute and close and care about each other because their friends and everything they have gone through; that chapter brought down the quality of the volume for me. Not by much, but it still did. Just do not find the ship of Rin and Shiemi appealing at all. I can definitely see why people like it, but I prefer them as friends and honestly, would rather if none of the Okumara twins got together with Shiemi. These boys really do not need any more conflict and worries between each other, especially over some girl. Though, don't get me wrong, I like Shiemi. She's such a sweet and caring person, but definitely hoping no ship between Rin and Yukio happen with her.
Finally, the volume ends with Mephisto sending the Okumura twins to look for Shura who has disappeared.
All in all, look forward to the next volume and hope for more brotherly love between my favorite precious boys, but I know it will only get worse before it gets better *cries*

I know it's a "me" problem, but I really don't like fanservice. It always feels un-necessary. The scene with them all naked in a hot tub or sauna or whatever was really dumb...in my opinion. Nothing really happened other than Shima being a pervert per usual. And don't even get me started on Shura...I really didn't want to see that...
Yukio continues to wonder about his eye and why it protects him, and why it's similar to Rin's blue flame. That Lucifer guy implied that there's some big secret regarding his birth...I wonder what that's supposed to mean. Yukio and Rin are twins, but is it possible for Yukio to have a different father? It seems unlikely, but what else did Lucifer mean?
That being said, I'm growing more frustrated with Yukio. Rin and Shiemi know something's up, but Yukio refuses to say anything. So stubborn.
"Lightning" seems like an interesting character. He reminds me a bit of Kisuke from Bleach. He says he's not good at teaching, but I feel like he'd be a great teacher without realizing it...
Oh and Rin and Shiemi's little moment together was really cute. I'm honestly rooting for them. Rin is so obvious and straightforward about his feelings for her, but it seems like she's more shy and a little oblivious about it. I mean, it's possible that she really only sees Rin as a friend, but perhaps...
Honestly, I'm just eagerly waiting for them to get together. I don't think it'll happen soon, though...

this volume was another filler one which continued to show characters recovering from the previous arc but also set up for the next major story arc as well as some plot twists. we had more with lightning who . this volume showed the main group back in classes training up for their exorcist exams and a new teacher arriving to help with their training.
the new teacher seems mysterious and is able to do a few things easier and faster then was previously mentioned. it will be interesting to see how he plays into the story as well as what else he is capable of. also the ending of this volume sets up for an interesting look at one of the main characters who readers have not been given a whole lot of information on but has been around for a fair bit.
also the side character arc with yukio is getting more and more interesting since this volume showed him trying to work out his new powers as well as if he should go meet a villain in order to get a better control over them. it will be interesting to see how this plays out as well as how this will affect yukio's character moving forward in the series.
overall another really good volume in this series with a promising new arc and some promising looking new character arcs, definitely curious to see how a few of the elements play out. 5/5

This volume begins a new arc but before that begins it gives us one heck of a fan service chapter. The core team heads off to a bath/spa to recover from what the Illuminata did to them and to try to accept Shima back after all they’ve learned about him. So we have tons of naked bodies, carefully places word balloons and steam especially when some demons appear. It was fun seeing Rin’s tail (take that as you will).
The rest of the arc is a bit more slow to unfold. There is a good amount of catching everyone up with their schooling and them facing having to pick their emphasis much faster than they thought to cope with the exorcist shortage. Bon finds himself trying to impress one of the knights, Light, to the point of reinventing himself a bit.
In the meantime, Yuki is trying to explore the secret of his eyes and potential Satanic legacy, going it alone as he wants no one to know. One of the most touching parts however, would be Shiemi’s storyline, facing her mother’s expectation of her and the sweet awkwardness between her and Rin.
With the ground work now set, the next volume promises to be more action packed as they have to find out what happened when one of their own disappears
This one is a character and humor volume, leaving the heavier conflicts with the illuminati of the previous two volumes behind.
Yokui continues to act strangely, having discovered the flame in his eye that he associates with his brother and unable to account for it. He attempts to trigger the effect again, going to some extreme lengths to do so.
The entire team goes to a public bath house. Supposedly funny. By the far the weakest chapter in my opinion.
The last few chapters deal with Light coming from the Vatican to join the Japanese sector run by Mephisto Pheles. No one really trusts "Lord Pheles," so Light slips in as a result. He proves capable of doing some pretty cool stuff. Suguro demonstrates how advanced he is, and then, when he shows he can be humbled he manages to get Light to take him as his apprentice.
I give it 3.7 ⭐, Bon been improve a lot in some of the panels, he become lightning apprentice n learned from him even though lightning is bad at teaching him also he got new haircut even his hair is all in black not like before yellow & black♥️. At bath house, Rin & shima peek on the girls side but bon used his chants to beat demon monkey who control them(Rin & shima) but when the wall got smashed, the boys see the girls naked at the pool, shura kill them in the end. Yukio's power revealed when yukio try kill himself by using his summoning demons & falling from tall building. Mephisto give a job to yukio with rin to find shura at aomori. Next volume pls ~ 🙂

So Shima is back but still seems to be playing both sides.
Suguro doesn't know if he wants to be an exorcist anymore but is now assistant/manager to the right-hand of the Paladin.....is Lightning acting like an idiot to throw everyone off or does he really have so little manners and common sense?
Shiemi! Her mom doesn't want her to he an exorcist and she wants to be one..... And then Rin confessed to her and her little naive brain let it go right over her head! I hope she thinks about it now!
And wth is going on with Yukio?!?!

Rin, Shima, Bon, Koneko; Aaah the gang seems to be reconnecting with one another now that they are getting somewhat passed Shima's double agent reveal. It's nice to see them coming back together. But Bon changed his hair! I don't like it.
Lightning; This guy... he is super weird but it's what makes him likeable.
THE BAD
Yukio: Someone is on a downward spiral...
