Rat Run, is a children’s fantasy, akin to an Aesop's fable. In essence, love conquers all.
Timere cowered in the darkness. The ground beneath the trees shook, as the monsters thundered past. Their blazing yellow eyes and angry roars sent a shiver of fear through Timere. Scurrying to safety, he huddled under a shrub. Clutching the long grass in his paws, he held on…afraid he would be blown away by the force of the wind created by the monsters huge bodies. Having drawn the short straw, it fell to Timere, to face the horror of the Rat Run. Would he survive? Would he succeed in uniting all rats? To fail meant certain death!
Y I Lee was born in Swindon Wiltshire, the eldest of three children. From a young age her greatest joy was to curl up with a good book. They became her escape from a troubled childhood. Over time she naturally progressed into writing. At the age of ten, she ambitiously attempted her first novel but quickly gave up. However, the seed was planted, and in the coming years in between a successful singing career she continued to put pen to paper, writing poetry and short stories. She's always had a great love for animals, especially horses. And thanks to a friend, she also grew to love Fancy rats, and spent a number of happy years breeding and showing them. Understandably, horses and rats often find their way into her books.
Y I Lee and her husband Keith live in the UK, in the beautiful county of Warwickshire.
Y I Lee's first fantasy novel 'The Shadowed Valley' was published on Oct 17th 2011. Followed in 2012 by 'A Rat and A Ransom.' A fantasy novel for children. Later in 2012 'Through a Glass' a fantasy for Y/A was published. Gathering Storm, published in 2014 is the sequel to Through a Glass. It started life as a Nano winner.
This was a wonderful fantasy story. The author obviously has studied and is familiar with natural animal behavior and has artfully woven that knowledge into the story, lending credibility to a intriguing growing up adventure. Y I Lee has written a story sure to mesmerize both young readers and adults. Who doesn't like to imagine what the secret life of forest dwellers might be like if we truly had the power to see inside? I highly recommend this well-told tale to anyone willing to open the pages. You will be instantly sucked into another world of fascinating characters and sometimes nail-biting scenes.
I received this book as a Good Reads giveaway. It was an ok story in the vein of Watership down. I think it was trying to say that with love and kindness you can overcome anything. I would say this book is more suited to older children because some parts are a bit violent for younger children.
