Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

ASM #5 is the first crossover of Dr. Doom (DrD). As such it is a highly sought after book in the early SM run. Given the many plots that DrD has been involved in over the years this book has been steadily going up; have seen several copies that were CGG 7.0 go for above guide. Don't miss a young inexperienced SM going up against this master of malevolence!

Don’t underestimate Doctor Doom!! I really enjoyed the action in this one. We finally got to see Doctor Doom take on Spider-Man and they used everything they had mentally and physically to take each other down. I hope we see more like this in future issues. Also Doom impressed me with the idea he came up with to try and find out who Spider-Man was.

Doctor Doom, arch nemesis of the Fantastic Four is on the scene to convince Spider-Man to join forces. The way he sees it, the Fantastic Four kick his butt, but barely. By having Spider-Man on his side, he figures the FF will not be successful. Spider-Man is dejected, disrespected, and neglected, so he should join forces. Yeah, no.

Doctor Doom does seem to have Spidey's number. It doesn't seem to matter what he does, Doctor Doom is one step in front of him.

At school, Peter's mates are ruthless. Flash Thompson has created a Spider-Man costume in order to get over on Peter. Doctor Doom is zeroing in. Because Peter and Flash are so close in proximity, Doctor Doom thinks Flash is the real Spider-Man.

Back home, Peter shuts off the power in order to get out of the house. Off he goes to fight Doctor Doom and save Flash. Once again Doctor Doom has Spidey's number. If not for the arrival of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man would have been toast. Much like the coyote and the roadrunner, Doctor Doom should try again to vanquish Spider-Man.

As wonderful as this story was, I am taken by the letters and bots at the end. It is obvious that this was an exciting time to be reading comics. X-Men and the Avengers were introduced as beginning in the notes. Wow!

AMAZING FANTASY 15, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1-10 (Spider-Man's First Arc)

Peter Parker is easily one of the greatest creations in the history of comic books. Even if you threw out every other plot element besides the character himself, you'd still have a character story that deals with so much poignant emotional and psychological conflict.

The dialogue is what really makes this. Stan Lee divides Peter Parker's dialogue into 3 distinct styles: Peter Parker's thoughts, Peter Parker's words, and Spider-Man's words. This structure says a lot about our protagonist; Peter Parker's words are presented in a very introverted and articulate manner. Spider-Man's words, conversely, are presented in a very extroverted and sarcastic manner. This presents the central conflict of the character, in that Spider-Man is a cathartic part of Peter's psychology; he is everything Peter is afraid to be, but can be behind the security blanket of a mask.

The only truth to the character is his thoughts, as he tightly controls the presentation of Peter Parker to hide suspicion he could be Spider-Man. This plays even further into the notion of Spider-Man being a cathartic release for him, in that his thoughts are designed as this fusion of Peter's intellect and Spider-Man's wit. Peter Parker's spoken words lack much of the wit which is present in his own thoughts. Spider-Man presents all of that wit, because he has more freedom to do so; behind the security blanket of a mask, there's less consequence.

And this plays into the deeper theme, of "Great Responsibility" coming with "Great Power." Because there is no physical consequence to himself. But his choice of how he uses this newfound freedom and newfound power has consequences for others... which, as iconic as they are, I won't dare spoil here. These consequences affect his romantic equal Betty Brant, his loyal to a fault Aunt May, the think-tank editor J. Jonah Jameson, or the city of New York as a whole and its perception of him; even if these consequences don't necessarily affect him directly, they still create a whole plate of intimate character conflicts that have nothing to do with spandex villains. The villains simply create a plot of his actions, where these ongoing conflicts resulting from his actions are his character evolution.

Spider-Man vs Doctor Doom. After a run of grounded villains (albeit with some special powers thrown in) it seems odd for Spidey, who is just finding his feet and getting used to his abilities, to be put against a top tier villain like Doom but I guess that back in the day the best selling “Marvel mag” would have been Fantastic Four so makes good business sense if it doesn’t much logically. Though I have to say the corny way Doom plans and talks here it is much harder to take him seriously compared to his character in the modern era.

Only in a Stan Lee comic can a trap door open up beneath someone with super fast reflexes yet still have time in suspended animation for both Doom and Spider-Man to have a conversation. Say what you will about these vintage issues but there’s something that makes me chuckle in every one.

Firsts: introduction of Betty Brant as a love interest.

NB. Jameson announces himself as publisher of both Now Magazine and Daily Bugle so I guess this was in response to any questions about why Jameson mentioned one then the other in previous issues.

Even though we get a crossover issue with the Fantastic Four, this story is much more darkly-comical than it should be. Flash Thompson gets captured by Dr. Doom because he's wearing a Spidey outfit, but Peter Parker almost leaves him to die. Vindictive, neighborhood Spider-Man.

[3] That Doom thought Flash is Spider-Man was hilarious. Besides that, this issue unfortunately didn't impress me. In comparison to the villains before, Doom is pretty boring honestly.

spidey is really unlucky, it seems like he's perceived as bad under his costume yet when people wear it, they're portrayed as cool.

always a good read!

Dr. Doom getting in on the Spidey action means that we also get some more panels full of the Fantastic Four. This isn't terrible, but it's a step down from the previous few issues.
