Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

Spidey (S) takes on the Vulture (V) in a rematch from issue #2. S learns a valuable lesson; never assume that you can defeat someone the same way twice! You can tell that Lee/Ditko are really trying to build on the empathetic feelings the reader has for S - the 'town without pity' angle that makes S so relatable. A great fight far 'above' the madding crowd!

The Vulture is back and he came prepared to take on Spider-Man! This one was really enjoyable and it was good seeing Vulture back because he always makes Spider-Man really think on how he can stop him. Not to mention we got to see a little more of Peter the romantic.

The Vulture escapes from prison several months after Spider-Man figured out his flying was due to magnets. Spidey battles this for once again, but has butt handed to him. In the fracas, Spider-Man injures his arm. Aunt May takes Peter to the doctor, who pronounces that whole not broken, Peter will be out of commission for a few weeks.

Lots of teasing at school sends Peter to J. Jonah to sell a photograph of The Vulture. Just then The Vulture shows up to rob The Bugle. Peter escapes and changes. He favors his injured arm. The Vulture again wins. This time he flies Spider-Man up high. Just as he is about to drop him to his death, Spider-Man webs the wings together. The Vulture falls and is captured. Peter Parker sneaks back into The Bugle and flirts with J. Jonah"s secretary.

Once again we get a wonderful letters section, but we also learned that Marvel wants to 86 it too. Boo hoo.

AMAZING FANTASY 15, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1-10 (Spider-Man's First Arc)

Peter Parker is easily one of the greatest creations in the history of comic books. Even if you threw out every other plot element besides the character himself, you'd still have a character story that deals with so much poignant emotional and psychological conflict.

The dialogue is what really makes this. Stan Lee divides Peter Parker's dialogue into 3 distinct styles: Peter Parker's thoughts, Peter Parker's words, and Spider-Man's words. This structure says a lot about our protagonist; Peter Parker's words are presented in a very introverted and articulate manner. Spider-Man's words, conversely, are presented in a very extroverted and sarcastic manner. This presents the central conflict of the character, in that Spider-Man is a cathartic part of Peter's psychology; he is everything Peter is afraid to be, but can be behind the security blanket of a mask.

The only truth to the character is his thoughts, as he tightly controls the presentation of Peter Parker to hide suspicion he could be Spider-Man. This plays even further into the notion of Spider-Man being a cathartic release for him, in that his thoughts are designed as this fusion of Peter's intellect and Spider-Man's wit. Peter Parker's spoken words lack much of the wit which is present in his own thoughts. Spider-Man presents all of that wit, because he has more freedom to do so; behind the security blanket of a mask, there's less consequence.

And this plays into the deeper theme, of "Great Responsibility" coming with "Great Power." Because there is no physical consequence to himself. But his choice of how he uses this newfound freedom and newfound power has consequences for others... which, as iconic as they are, I won't dare spoil here. These consequences affect his romantic equal Betty Brant, his loyal to a fault Aunt May, the think-tank editor J. Jonah Jameson, or the city of New York as a whole and its perception of him; even if these consequences don't necessarily affect him directly, they still create a whole plate of intimate character conflicts that have nothing to do with spandex villains. The villains simply create a plot of his actions, where these ongoing conflicts resulting from his actions are his character evolution.

This issue features "The Return of the Vulture" for the second face off. This time spidey gets his first major injury with a damaged arm ("feels like its broken!") which impacts his maneuverability. Presumably as Parker aged his spider-abilities, including his healing factor, improves (in 2013's Amazing Spider-Man #700.3 Parker is burned from head to toe but soon recovers). I don't know what dates this more, that Spider-Man knocks out a "well it sure isn't the Lone Ranger" quip or that the plot centers around The Vulture stealing Jameson's payroll money* for peoples pay packets.

Firsts: this appears to be the first time that a set time is mentioned with regards how long the webs last; as Spidey webs up Jameson he says "that won't wear off for at least an hour" whereas in previous issue Spidey webs up Jameson's chair and is still there (and sticky) the following morning.

NB. Parker's home is mentioned as being in "Forest Hills"

*not quite sure why Jameson says that the theft of which would destroy the business, Jameson can't be scrimping on insurance could he?!

Ditko is one of the best artist to ever work on the title, and he certainly created the mold for the character and his Rogues gallery. I'm personally not a fan of the Vulture, but there is enough of Spider-Man's every day problems in this one to make it interesting. Developments in Peter's love life, too. Recommended for Silver Age Marvel fans, fans of Ditko and Lee, and Spider-Man fans.

The story in this one is fine with some fun moments, but my favourite part of the book was in the letters page. The guy who explained the sort of girlfriend Peter should have and the funny response they gave him, had me chuckling.

Hm. Maybe this is the Vulture issue I read in sixth grade. Peter's flirting with Betty at the end was cringe.

A rematch with The Vulture leads to an excellent battle of wits here, and this is another enjoyable Spider-Man adventure. I wasn't sure of how I would feel while exploring this comic from the very beginning, but I was already hooked by this point.
