Wait / Hear: Recapturing the Lost Art of Hearing God’s Voice

Rate this book
Who has time to wait on God anymore?
Certainly not the believer who was too busy working for Him to actually hear from Him.

Wait / Hear is an honest confession of an activity addict—a guy who measured his spirituality by the speed of his schedule and the scope of his ministry. But when a season of devastating losses collided with a drought of faith, activity turned out to be just busyness wearing a church badge. The noise in his life had become so deafening he couldn’t hear the one Voice that mattered.

In the wreckage of burnout, Robby rediscovered the one thing we all desperately ears to hear what God is saying. But he found it in the last place he wanted to look—in the quiet, in the stillness, in the kind of silence most people avoid at all costs.

This book is an invitation to discover the same practices that turned a season of burnout into a lifetime of breakthrough, proving that God still speaks to those who are still enough to listen.

Full disclaimer: Robby is a good personal friend and I'm sure that shapes my view of his book.
But I was sure that I wasn't going to like it. He had mentioned that it was "a book on prayer and the revival at Longhollow."

I'm not a fan of talking about 'revival.'

It's so easily sensationalized. We love to brand the energy and leverage the moment to our own ends. Knowing that Robby is a part of what I cheekily call the 'Baptist Industrial MegaChurch Complex,' I assumed that this book would be another one of those things. If it was a book on prayer, I assumed it would be full of gimmicks and "just-do-it-this-way" statements. I figured it would be void of real depth and an appreciation for Christian history and mysticism. And that bothered me, because Robby had been such a support of my own work and a great friend throughout.

Luckily, this book was none of the things that I feared it would be.

The book was about intimacy with God. Gallaty was humble in his telling of what he encountered and where he was at as a pastor. It wasn't sensationalized or packaged in megachurch wrapping paper. The book was about an honest yearning to know God more and hear His voice clearly. The chapters were filled with practical prayer practices without being gimmicky. Robby spoke about Christian history (and even the mystics!) without giving too many disclaimers or critiques.

And yes, Robby does belong to a world of protestant megachurch. That is no fault of his own and simply the context that he works in. For many of us that also find ourselves there and can see it for what it is, this book is a wonderful call to figure out what it might look like to steward those spaces well. Many have left those spaces, but many others are trying to figure out how to stay and walk well.

It was a wonderfully grounding book that is very practical and accessible for the every day Christian believer. It's not heady or academic, but nor is it shallow at all. It is full of challenge and practical encouragement. There are books that serve as deep dives on the profound nature of Christian mysticism and the history of spiritual formation. They are beautiful. But if you are looking for a resource that can help you take a significant step towards more daily intimacy with Christ, this is my new favorite recommendation.

Gallaty provides an excellent outline to drawing closer to God. Through personal experience and wisdom from many who've gone before us, Gallaty provides a roadmap to letting go of the stuff that inhibits one's intimacy with God. On making room we are then able to feast more on God himself.

As the title implies, silence and solitude became an essential habit in Gallaty's life. He made a commitment to sitting on his porch after putting the kids to bed each night to enjoy silence with God. As he acknowledges there were many nights when nothing happened but slowly Holy Spirit began to gently work their way in his heart identifying places that needed healing.

This listening became a daily rhythm along with Bible reading and prayer which served to aid the growth of his relationship with God. Gallaty, to his credit, acknowledges his drivenness and pride in running a large church, but ever so slowly Holy Spirit was working its way in his heart to make these less important. Humility became another ingredient as did remembering God's faithfulness to him over the years.

Suddenly as their pastor began to grow increasingly intimate with the Lord, Long Hollow church where Gallaty served began to experience revival. People coming from far and wide to get baptised.

This is both an inspirational book but one that is very practical. I'd be surprised if a reader wasn't impacted in some way after reading it.

I feel blessed to have received an early ebook copy from the publisher via Net Galley, however, this had no bearing on my review.

The next step in your life towards Christ

This book is practical and pretty much all I needed. It will help with discernment and getting away from the constant distractions , both outwards and inwardly.
It’s going back to basics of silence and time away from it all.
The world isn’t how it was decades ago. Now, with technology (which is supposed to make us work less and easier) it’s more of a distraction. We have more appointments, more notes to make, more calendar entries to respond to.
This book will lead you to everything you’ve been looking for in Christ, through the practice of silence:
1. Discernment
2. Peace
3. Release of unforgiving
4. Decluttering of the mind
5. Mental and emotional renewal
6. Revival
7. Deep understanding
8. Drawing closer to scripture
9. Understanding scripture
10.Living from scripture
11. Hearing Gods voice and making it a habit.

This book is a one stop shop, as all Christian needs can be met through it. You can find solutions to your questions and gain useful information and guidance, just from learning how to WAIT and HEAR.

This book is fantastic and needs to be read by all followers of Jesus. This is full of practical spiritual advice and followed up by stories of the impact it had on Pastor Robby and the congregation at Long Hollow Church.

I live in the county where Long Hollow resides and have seen first hand that impact these spiritual truths have had on Robby, the leadership, the church, and ultimately the community.

Read this book. Consume the material. Sit. Wait. Hear.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing an ARC for an unbiased review.

Pastor Robby Gallaty delivers a thoughtful look at taking time out of our busy lives to really sit with God and hear what he has to say. There's a lot here that really resonated with me, and I'm still unpacking it. It's a relatively short book, at only 260 some pages, but it's packed with tons of useful information and observations on how we as Christians can really hear God's voice. Definitely worth the read.
