Surprisingly there aren’t many books like this around. Down the Front is a raw and sprawling ride through thirty years of attending gigs by a proper obsessive. Plenty to enjoy plenty to empathise with and rightly so- plenty to dispute (I was so pleased that Coldplay hadn’t barged their way in anywhere and then right at the end they popped up). The book was written over ten years ago and would definitely benefit from an update and probably a complete redraft under a good guiding editor’s eye, making stronger themes of some of the personal and real life threads running through it. All experiences being personally perspective I was amused that the Lou Reed Metal Machine Music gig was listed among the lost causes: for me it was one of the great gig experiences of my life!
