For them it is not crime but an art inherited from their ancestors. It is also a story of tribal youth's struggle to give up this profession and enter the main stream.

Dhruv Bhatt
15 books69 followersDhruv Bhatt was born on 8 May 1947 in Ningala village of Bhavnagar State (now Bhavnagar district, Gujarat) to Prabodhray Bhatt and Harisuta Bhatt. He studied at various places, standard 1 to 4 at Jafrabad and Matriculation from Keshod. After studying commerce for two years, he left further studying[1] in 1972 and joined Gujarat Machine Manufacturers as Sales Supervisor. He voluntary retired and started writing career.[2]
His novel Akoopar has been adapted into a play directed by Aditi Desai.[3] Tattvamasi was adapted into the 2018 Gujarati film Reva.[4]

(Below is my take in both languages. And no, both are not translation of each other, so do read both)
આ પુસ્તક ને હુ કઈ શૈલી માં ગણું એ જ ખબર નથી પડી રહી. જરા પણ અણસાર નહોતો મને આની કહાની વિષે. ઘણી વાર એમ બને, કે હું પુસ્તક ને બસ લેખક નું નામ જોઈ ને લઇ લઉં વાંચવા, પાછળ ના કવર પર વાંચું જ નહિ, રખે ને સ્પોઇલર થઇ જાય. અને ખરેખર એવી મજા કરાવી ધ્રુવ દાદા એ આ પુસ્તક માં, કે વાત ના પૂછો. કોણ વિચારી શકે, કે ચોરો ના પણ શાસ્ત્રો, નિયમો, મર્યાદાઓ અને ખુમારી આ રીતે વર્ણવી શકાય. સાથે સાથે અદભુત રીતે સમાવી છે આ કહાણી માં, ધ્રુવ દાદા ના પ્રિય તત્વો - પ્રકૃતિ અને લોકકથાઓ નો વારસો. સરસ્વતી, સરસતી, સતી. હંમેશા ની જેમ ધ્રુવ દાદા એ મજબૂત સ્ત્રી પાત્ર બનાવ્યું છે કે જે તમને પહેલા જ પાનાં થી તમને ગમી જાય. તમને વાર્તા માં ઓતપ્રોત કરી મૂકે. એક ચિત્ર ખડું કરી દે તમારી નજર આગળ, કે તમે તેની આસપાસ જીવો છો એવો ભાસ ના થાય તો જ નવાઈ. બીજા પણ પાત્રો, નાના માં નાના પણ ખુબ જ અસરદાર. નાનકી, રઘુ, બટૂગે , અરે 'પરમાર' સાહેબ, જેનો ઉલ્લેખ શરૂઆત માં આવે, અને પછી એવી જગ્યા એ આવે કે તમને સુખદ આશ્ચર્ય ના થાય તો જ નવાઈ. વધારે નહિ લખું, કેમ કે આ પુસ્તક એટલું માણવા લાયક છે,તે વાંચી ને જ જણાશે .
Thief, robber, burglar ! What does one expect from a book about them? What a writer can weave around this theme? Heists, raids, planned loots.. But here, Dhruv Bhatt creates a whole different world of words around them. Something I have never read before. A story about them, a story that describes their own rules, their own feelings, emotions, rituals and lives - in actual, how they live through in the real world, that is around us. How our 'social' structures lead to their fall and rise, while their upliftment is hindered by the bricks laid by agencies that meant to work for them.
You are taken into a different Gujarat which you have never seen despite being born and brought up in those areas. As always, there is a strong lead woman character, as Dhruv dada always portrays, who is leading the events like anything. Saraswati, a daughter of a family, which has been in this business since time known. How she grows to be a master of her job while thinking like nobody in her tribe did till now. In between this, thrilling instances of robbery (which I don't think, is a suitable word) and heist are described in a manner it leaves you in awe.
An obvious ode to nature and wandering in the wild is omnipresent here like always the writer has put in most of his books. Words flow on pages and keeps you drenched in their simplicity and satisfaction of reading something worthwhile, and without being preachy it gives enlightenment in the inimitable way of Dhruv dada.

This novel is very different from Dhruv bhatt's other works. While reading the book we can see how deeply he has researched on tribe of thieves and their culture. Those who are expecting another nature-centric book by Dhruv Bhatt will be disappointed. But still if you want to read something new and refreshing than its a must read.

This is the first Guajarati author whom I am reading more than twice, the first book I have read of Bhatt is Akoopar which is based on Gir forest (life of maldharis) the second which I have read was on villagers living near ocean i.e. Samudrantike.
Now this book Timirpanthi is a travelogue written in a novel format, it’s a well researched book on nomadic tribes who live near villages but not in the village they migrate from place to place. They live in a region called settlement which was made by British government. This community was famous for their stealing work, they think theft is an art rather than a crime, according to them even rich people are also looting peoples but in a different way. Their forefathers were also doing the same thing, but at that time there were no currency so they use to steal crops from the villagers farm. At last to divert this new generation’s from robbery to main stream business by the protagonist by educating them is best portrayed by the author.
In short Timirpanthi is a page turner novel, mesmerizing from the very first page, I bet after completing this book, this will be your favourite novel other books of Dhruv Bhatt’s. The character buildup is excellent, and the way whole community is being represented by the author is really awesome. But I have seen one similarity about this author that the protagonist of his novel is always female character, I don’t know but he is trying to say that females are also important when it comes to earning or gut feeling is compared with male.

तिमिरपंथी - एक चोरी करणाऱ्या (चोरी करणे ही पण एक कला मानणाऱ्या ) जमाती मधल्या हुशार, कलाकार स्त्री ची कहाणी. ध्रुव भट्ट यांचे वाचलेलं पाहिलं पुस्तक पण अतिशय सुंदर गुंतवून ठेवणारं लिखाण. अनुवाद ही अतिशय सरळ सोप्या भाषेत.

Story of those people and world about whom larger part of society has no idea. If we are looking for the another part of story, different perspective than let's start are walking and their skills, art and knowledge. Also the pride and honor of uniform has been compromised but seems more realistic.

Dhruvbhai is my favourite author. I place Timirpanthi in the same shelf as his Samudrantike and Akoopar. Each of these bring out something about a place, or a person or a region that would stay with you for ever. He excels in drawing out the character of the principal actor of his novel. It is Sati- Sarawati here. You will recognise Sati if you ever met her in a train or a settlement.
Dhruvbhai is a master of atmospherics. Whether he is describing a Danga-settlement or the cool sands of desert.
Here he uses the Lingua of the nomadic race as easily as otherwise he would be using the city tongue.
Gujarati literature is richer by Dhruvbhai.

બગડે રખડતા અને ચોરી કરીને જ ચલાવતા, એજ એમનું કામ અને એજ એમનું ધર્મ. ધ્રુવ ભટ્ટ ની આ રચના એવા લોકો ની કહાની છે, જે એક જગ્યાએ સ્થાયી રહતા નહીં, ઊંટ, ઘેટા, બકરીયો લઈને જ્યાં મન ફાવે એ જગ્યાએ રોકાઇને સમય ગુજારે. મહારાણા પ્રતાપ સાથે યુદ્ધ માં ભાગ પણ લીધું, આ એ જ રખડતી જાતી. એમને દરેક ફળ માં થી દારૂ બનાવવાનું હુનર, રાત્રીના ત્રીજા પહારમાં ચોરી કરવા નીકળે અને જે હાથ લાગે એનાથીજ ગુજાર કરે.
એક એવા સમાજ ની કહાની જે ભારત માં રહીને અહીના સભ્ય સમાજ થી અલગ પોતાની ઓળખ રાખે છે ....

It is a story about the art, the art here is "Chori" meaning robbing or stealing or theft.
This art, though diminishing, has its roots in ancient stories too. Rember a Sanskrit play "Mruchhakatikam"! or a movie based on it titled "Utsav". In this story a thief leaves his mark or signature in the way he cut opens a wall.
Dhruv Bhatt has a narrative that enables a reader to visualise what's happening in the world of words. That is what has happened to me while reading this one and many others of his stories.
The words and thus the characters come to life because they are from real life. Dhruv Bhatt has interacted with them at some point in his life and that conversation, context and incidences have remained in his consciousness and appears to us in the form of a book.
I recommend, for those who can read Gujarat to read it in Gujarati.

It was nice to know more about a tribe that survives on stealing profession. For them it's an art and not a crime. Came across many new terms that are particularly used for the different types of thieves depending on their responsibility in a gang and their strength.
With changing times, their struggle to come out of their traditional work of robbery and join the main stream ends the story at the new beginning.
