The Earth is dying, the only hope of escape is to win the lottery and be taken to Karal to be an alien mate. But what if the lottery wasn't random? What if they want you for what you know, and to punish you for what you've done?
Deceit:Chosen by the Karal (Book One) can be read as a standalone book.
This is the fate awaiting Elissa. She didn't enter the lottery, but somehow she still won. As the puzzle unravels, she finds herself trapped, with no option but to go to the planet Karal. All she can hope, is that her chosen alien mate will see her for who she really is, and not for the person he thinks she is.
Marin has been chosen to be the first prize in the Earth lottery. With no females of their own, the Karalians have no choice but to take females from the dying Earth. Only this time they are avoiding taking them by force, unless absolutely necessary. But with resistance to their presence on Earth, his mission soon changes. Not only does he have the responsibility of creating the first of the next generation of Karalians, he also has to find a way to change the attitude of the Earth female he has been given.
But is there anyway to change the opinion of a woman who is responsible for the deaths of two of his species? Time is not on his side, because as soon as the female is with child, she will be sent to the breeding house, there to be shut away until she gives birth to their child.
When he starts to fall for Elissa, he questions whether they are better off together. However, the Hierarchy rule Karal, can he persuade them to break with traditions?
For adults only, contains scorching hot alien/human scenes
Harmony Raines loves to write romance filled with magic and love. Her men are usually not so alpha, but they know how to treat their fated mates, or alien lovers well.

Just my way of saying thank you for giving my books a try.
This was just an average alien/sci-fi romance. Nothing really unique or one of a kind. the characters and plot felt pretty generic and one dimensional. I doubt I will continue this series..
Not a bad book, I actually quite enjoyed this quick read. Though this book ends with many questions left unanswered I believe this is because the story will continue in each book, with each new hero and heroine. In the future earth is almost extinct so when a new species of aliens comes forth telling earth they will help many are ecstatic but others are not. Elissa is one of those who are not happy so when her name is selected to be a part of the breeding program Elissa is more suspicious than ever.
The Karal people need woman to keep their own race from being extinct, but what the people of Karal aren't telling earth is that the woman will be breeders who once are impregnated will be housed till the baby is born then passed to the next Karal. Marin has been selected to be the first Karal and also given the task of getting information from Elissa the woman who is responsible for deadly actions against the Karal.
Once they meet Marin is shocked at the feelings Elissa brings out in him, and the more time they spend together the more Marin begins to waver in his planets plans for the woman of earth and specifically for Elissa. When their feelings get to be more than they ever thought possible Marin and Elissa begin to want a future of their own but the rulers of Karal have plans of their own and they are the only ones who can ensure Marin and Elissa's future.
This was a nice book, quick but a nice premise for a story. We are given some nice background into Elissa's earth(in the future) as well as Marins's world, and people. This is good start to a new series and we are also given a glimpse into book two as well as who the next hero will be. I was given enough information at the end of this book that I really would like to check book two out to see what will happen next as well as see a stubborn alien fall when he meets his heroine.
Kindle Unlimited free read. Futuristic story of a dying earth. We humans have polluted, over-populated and exploited every resource the planet has until the Earth is basically beyond redemption. Humans are sick and desperate.
An advanced alien race consisting of all males have discovered earth and are needing fertile women to breed with. An agreement has been reached with Earth leaders for a lottery to be held for the choosing of earth mates.
The lottery is rigged and the aliens plans for the women aren't as disclosed as the human women would hope. The 'breeders' are to go to a concentration style camp after they have conceived, then handed off to a new alien man after they have given birth.
Of course there's more, a budding romance, and changing the minds of the alien establishment leaders.
Kind of predictable, but still enjoyable. Recommended.
This review is for the series as it currently exists (through 5). These are definitely addictive. There is something about an alien and a human female - that trips my trigger. I read very little mf nowadays - mostly in a few small genre's. These were nicely done and kept me moving on one after the other. They aren't deep - and the world building could be stronger - but I still can't keep away.
'Such a wonderful series Such a shame' is the title I gave my review of Book #3
What a wonderful story, not book #1 only, the entire premise behind the series storyline. And here comes a big 'BUT'... but not if you don't go through all three together. I encourage everyone to begin with #1 and read them back to back as I did. If you don't, then the disappointment of the obvious gaps will be even more evident. Each one is seriously incomplete with major literary opportunities missed. I don't understand this need to crank out 'books' so quickly at the cost of the story excellence. These stories have underlying meanings/lessons which are diminished by their lack of completeness and character development....and for what? I gave books 1-3 four stars but individually, because of the above, they would rate only 2 as 'stand alone'.
I like it! I like the premise, the aliens and our heroine. And I like that is slightly different from the hundreds of others I have read. Her motivation. The way females are treated. The aliens’ motivations… all.. different that I have read.
And even though, once again, our virgin hero is the most amazing lover ever… that is explained, in detail, and makes sense in the story. So I will allow it. 😁
Virgin rating: Innocence of virgin hero: 2.5/5 Innocence in losing it: 1/5 Build up to losing it: 2/5 Hotness of losing it: 3.5/5 Busted touching himself: no POV of losing it: female
I am giving this a conservative 4 stars because it's not like it's Shakespeare or anything. And it's not as good as some other stuff out there. BUT I really liked it. I liked the MCs. I liked the world building. I liked the Sci-Fi Tech stuff. And I really liked the romance. So yeah. I liked it. I liked the whole series and devored them all in like 2 days.
I really loved this book. The only problem that I found with it was that there was no time lapse. Besides the brief mention of days passing before she was released from the hospital, there was never another night through out the book. She went from hating to loving her mate in the span of a single day. Not to mention there seemed to be many scenes that would be too long to do all of it in a day.
SCI-FI DELIGHT !!! Wowza! Harmony Raines has strutted her stuff and once again surprised us all with a foray into the wonderful world of science fiction and what a delightfully entertaining treat it is! I love it! Deceit is the first book in her brand spanking new series, Chosen by the Karal and it totally rocks, people! Each release is a stand alone novella with no cliffhanger but if I understand correctly, each book will revolve around the same premise but will feature a different couple and will also include several of the same characters in each book. This is just so exciting! I love science fiction! The premise of the series: In a future dystopian earth, the planet is overpopulated and on the verge of destruction. The air is polluted and there is a severe shortage of food, fuel, natural resources and breathable oxygen. Many of earth's animals are now extinct. Six months ago, an alien race called the Karal arrived via a wormhole offering to help mankind and save the day in exchange for an alliance and breedable women. Wait! What? Women? A lottery has been called and women that meet certain criteria have the option to enter their names in the drawing. And just what is the prize if you win the lottery, you ask? To move to the planet Karal where food and oxygen is abundant, become the very lucky mate to one of the handsome aliens, serve as his personal broodmare and become an alien baby machine. Huh? Wait, that's the prize? But of course, humans would not be human without groups of violent, organized resistance and they intend to make their presence known. The plot of this story: Beautiful scientist Elissa Sergeant is not excited at all about the new lottery and has no intention of entering so when her name is called as the winner, she is more than shocked. What the heck? How in the world did that happen??? She immediately suspects that the lottery has been rigged and her past has come back to haunt her. When she returned home, she had told no one of her secret shame and was desperately trying to put the entire betrayal in her past but obviously the aliens have other plans for her. The irony has certainly not escaped her that after being blamed for the bombing of a Karalian embassy and causing the deaths of ten humans, albeit innocently, she would now be used to propagate and procreate for the aliens. A lifelong sentence of breeding aliens but just how long would that life be? Maybe not long at all if they truly suspect she played a part in the bombing. And if anyone here finds out, she most likely would be thrown in jail and charged with speciesism. But still, the last thing in the world, or should I say universe, she wants is to be taken to Karal and mated with a Karalian who seem to be so cruel, cold and harsh. Out of all the males from Karal, Marin has been chosen to be the first to breed with an Earth female and become the first "husband" for an earth woman. They have no females on the Planet Karal and time is running out for their race. They desperately need a compatible species with whom to procreate to prevent their extinction. Earth females are sexually and genetically compatible so in return for earth women, the Karalians are trying to save the human race from its own destruction although he seriously questions if they're truly worth the effort since many of the humans seem to resent and despise them and are actively involved in organized efforts to kill members of his species. No one from earth suspects he had known for two weeks that his mate would be Elissa Sargeant, the woman responsible for one of the biggest resistance allies since they had arrived which had ultimately resulted in the deaths of not only ten humans but also two Karalians which they had kept secret. But if she's guilty of these accusations, why in the world did she enter the lottery? Or did she? Hmmm....I wonder? Now it was his job to breed with her and change her preconceived notions about Karalians. He isn't looking forward to the task at hand or at least he wasn't. Now seeing her in person, he is strangely attracted to her and now he is having feelings for her? What has she done to him? He wants her and as soon as possible! What the heck? How can this be? Things are seldom as they seem and secrets always exist but just who is deceiving whom??? Let the games begin or in this case, the lottery! The book is written as dual, alternating points of view, his and hers, and gives the reader an insightful peak into the mindset of both of primary characters. The story is exciting, original, inventive, unusual, well executed, fast-paced, romantic and arousing. The dialogue is well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, well developed and engaging. Raines combines these elements into a brilliantly entertaining science fiction story filled with danger, adventure and romance. No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful, innocent scientist-check! Handsome, sexy, color-changing alien-check! Danger, drama, lies, deceit, secrets, betrayal and some surprising plot twists-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, sweet romance and some steamy, dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait for the next book in this exciting new series! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!!!

Elissa hates the Karal; the handsome, dark brooding aliens who are supposedly here to save the human race. But she doesn't believe it. There are things she knows about them. Which is one of the reasons she doesnt enter the 'lottery' to be chosen to mate with a Karalian male. She has no interest in them as a species despite the fact her life with them might be improved by food, clean air (which actually contains oxygen and not pollution) and fuel. So, it comes as a bit of a shock, to say the least, when the lottery is drawn and it's her face that appears on the giant screen, like some bad-romance version of 'The Hunger Games'. Surprise is not the word that comes to mind! But then it clicks; this is vengeance, a chance to torture her for information about the resistance - after all, she is responsible for two Karalian deaths and one of the biggest resistance rallies in history. The Karalians show colours during sex. The males demonstrate their emotions and arousal through flashes of colour on their skin. Whilst Elissa has to have the skin on her hands repaired by them so can sense his emotions through her fingertips, which gives it an interesting dynamic. The home world build and politics are sound, but there's something here that is lacking, which I can't quite put my finger on. For starters, it's novelette length by estimate, so it's too short to really get to grips with, and the females are a little too black and white, just as the relationship moves on very swiftly even for a short. However I know Raines' work is better as it progresses so I'd be tempted to see how the series and her writing develops.
A dying, overpopulated Earth needs saving. The female-less planet of Karal needs...well...females. An exchange of sorts is made. Earth will received its much-needed help in exchange for females willing to relocate to Karal and submit to mating and producing offspring for the Karalians. Sounds like a perfect solution to both planet's problems and a great read for me especially since SFR, and this trope in particular, is a favorite of mine. This was not the light, sometimes humorous, read I have come to expect from this plotline. This story was aptly named as "deceit" was definitely the underlying theme. The "lucky" lottery winner thinks she is going to relocate to a planet with good food and clean air and water, live in nice place with a male who will treat her well and provide him the children he and his planet needs. The truth? Acquire an Earth woman through the (fixed) Lottery, get her pregnant, immediately send her to the breeding house(prison) and upon birth of the child, whisk him away for a Karalian to raise. And the kicker?...Hand the female off to the next Karalian to impregnate in order to diversify the gene pool! I was SO angry at Marin (the male lead character) when I found out the reality of the agreement...at least on the Karalian's side...that I almost threw my Kindle. Argh! I kept reading though, hoping Marin would redeem himself in my eyes. I mean, this is supposed to be a romance. Surely he wouldn't do something so atrocious! Did he redeem himself? Well, "Deceit" is one of those it's-a-cliffhanger-but-not books with a happy-for-now ending. But, I will say I was so caught up in the story that I have already purchased the next in the series AND have started reading it.
Wow! I'm surprised how much I liked this. I'm not always a fan of books this short. While I'd love if it had been longer- the world building was so good- the book was well paced, the character development was great, and the plot was interesting. While this is a complete book, I can't wait to see more of this couple in the future books in this series. The story is about a human woman Elissa whose name is drawn in a lottery for human females to mate with an alien man with the promise of clean air, food and water. Earth iis only a decade or so from no longer being able to support life due to being over populated and destroying the environment. The alien race, the Karalians, do not have females and must search out other humanoid species to mate and reproduce. While this book is tagged as erotica it is noteworthy to mention that while the sex scenes are fairly explicit they do not dominate the book. I loved the sexual tension and passion between the couple. As for the "heat level" I would categorize it as a 7 (1 being Christian romance, 5 being fade to black and 10 being pure erotica). This book has a wonderful balance between the plot/story and the love scenes. In many "erotic romances" I feel like the love scenes are the focus and not the story and characters. Some authors seem to write like they have a quota of explicit sex scenes regardless if it fits with the characters and story. This author definitely writes a complex story full of passion. I only wish it were longer so I could have spent more time in that world! The series is "free" to read through Kindle unlimited.
The aliens were run by a male dominated society. Makes sense as there are only males. But you would think that a more intelligent species would have found a more civilized way of getting women that just taking females from other planets and raping them. I'm not exaggerating. The female lead actually asks out right. So you just raped them and then put them here?
From the beginning I had a problem with the fact that once the male lead had used the female it was planned that she would birth that child and then be passed to another. One can reason that none of this was his plan but ordered by someone else. But doesn't it say something about his character that he would go along with it? Even if she is a stranger at the time that is unquestionably barbaric. That he would even consider it. To anyone. Despite what crime he thinks they committed. It's just wrong.
I didn't get a love vibe off of anything in this book. I couldn't like the male lead after I read all the ways he calmly accepted breeding and then giving up the female. The end doesn't feel even temporarily secure either. No love and no happy ending. Disappointing.
This book is sort of like the Grabbed Series by Lolita Lopez mixed up with Brides of the Kindred by Evangeline Anderson, but a touch less with the heavy smut. I had a yen for mindless galactic nookie and had this on my Kindle. All in all I feel ambivalent about the novel while I have curbed my alien fix.
The Karal are an alien race of futuristic, tree hugging hippies, with no females. In a "Mars wants women" scheme with Earth the Karal have agreed to share technology with the humans and try to save them both from imminent demise. The first to go in the Karal bride lottery is Elissa who has a dark history of prejudice and sedition with the alien saviors. The big question is if two people who don't want, trust, or like one another save two races.
The answer is two species who are all about the mindless galactic nookie.
If you don't mind a light read this isn't the worst thing you could chose to read.
2.5 This story had a promising start with some turmoil and intrigue but, quickly lost its umph. Elissa fell in love with the wrong guy and got wrapped up into a situation not of her doing. This part of her life is just touched upon and you don't really get a full picture of what happened but, you know the guy used her then she moved on. However the repercussions of her part haunt her. Elissa is mistakenly entered into a lottery through her flighty selfish sister's machinations.
Marin is the lucky recipient of the lottery winnings. He barely gets to know Elissa but, budding love ensues so his skin tells him but, he does not really express much of anything. He was a bit of a flat character and the writing did nothing to endear him to me.
I am hoping the next in the series adds some meat to the story.

I bought this book just because I was curious about a new author of science fiction romance, not really expecting it to have much depth. However, I found myself charmed and entertained by this story of a dying Earth and a planet that had lived a certain way as far as procreating each generation for a long time. The story of the alien man and human woman coming together and learning that they were not so different was well written and my only complaint is that I wish the book had been a longer and more in depth story. I find I want to learn more about their story and have already bought the second book in this series.
Sci-Fi tale with the dying planet Earth, and an alien species needing women to replenish their generation. A lottery will be held every month so a female can go to their planet to mate and procreate their species. Elissa goes first and Marin, one of the Karal, negotiates to have her stay with him, not in the breeding house. He can't be cold and indifferent once he meets her. Interesting story, hot sex, and deep characters make this worthwhile. This can be a stand alone, but I think would be more fun for the reader if you know the characters as the series develops. Well written, realistic and telling, this is a fun series. Highly recommend. ENJOY !!
I usually do not read alien books. But since I enjoy this author I gave it a chance. I'm glad I did. The first half of the book is designed to set up the series so we don't get to spend much time with the main characters as a couple. Or even much time when they arrive to the new planet (book ends at 89%). I would have liked to have seen more once they arrived. I am hoping we'll see more in subsequent books.
This is the first book out about how aliens come to an ever populated earth to find 'breeders'. Woman who match their DNA to help them have sons. The alien planet many years ago had killed off the female's so to keep Livni g they went into space to find compatible females to mate with. Now it's deaths turn. But will the female population go willingly just to be placed in confinement after getting pregnant? Can't wait to read more by Harmony Raines.
Rating 2.5 While this had good world building, I found the romance piece lacking. The quick jump from enemy to totally in love and committed isn't credible. I felt that the Karals' actions were reprehensible and am not sure that the hero actually ever admits or accepts this. I don't see the concessions made as being believable or lasting. I borrowed the bundle on Kindle Unlimited but returned it after the disappointment of this story.
The author knows how to weave the mystery and suspense to the plot of the story because once you start reading; you will not be able to put it down. Hopefully, Elissa, will be able to pave the way for the other human females that come to, Marin's planet and at last she found love. Highly recommended and so ready to read book two.
I had high hopes for this story. Very interesting premise. The beginning of the book immediately grabbed my attention. However, it soon fizzled out. There was not enough development of the characters interactions. They hated each other. Boom. They were together. Boom. They didn't trust each other. Boom. They trusted each other. You get the picture.
This was okay, but also super short and simplistic. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it would have been fleshed out character wise and if the issues raised weren't glossed over at the end. I've just read better sci-first romance that did a better job of getting me interested enough to purchase the series and this didn't do that for me.
2.5 stars: not great, not bad. But hey, it was free :)
I think it could have benefitted greatly from a few more pages. The "love" was rushed too much and instead became only lust. It had some interesting ideas, but these fell flat because they needed more time to flesh them out.
