Winner of the 2015 Drunken Druid Award (Ireland) for high literary merit.
Nominee for the 2015 Bram Stoker Award (HWA) in the First Novel category.

In a suburb on Boston’s North Shore, a catatonic little girl is found behind a dumpster. She is a mystery. As Social Worker Debbie Gillan pieces together the puzzle of the child's identity, she discovers the child had disappeared two years earlier along with a twin sister. She also discovers HANNAHWHERE, an alternate world that is both a haven and a prison.... Life altering trauma becomes the key to unraveling the truth about the children, about Hannahwhere...and about Debbie herself. Truths that could either save them or destroy them all.

HANNAHWHERE is a revelation. This constantly surprising novel has some very dark moments, but John McIlveen's clean, clear prose carries you through them and back into the light of the good, decent people who fuel this story with their desperate efforts to do the right thing. Hannah herself is a joy. If she were up for adoption, I'd be the first in line.”
-- F. Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of COLD CITY

HANNAHWHERE by John McIlveen is everything a book should be--filled with unforgettable characters, fast-paced, and a page-turner. I loved it!”
-- Heather Graham, New York Times bestselling author of LET THE DEAD SLEEP

"From the very first line of HANNAHWHERE, you know you're in good hands. John McIlveen raises a compelling new voice with a story that is at once playful and frightening, thrilling and heartbreaking. Highly recommended."
-- Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of ROT & RUIN and FIRE & ASH

"John McIlveen's HANNAHWHERE is a thrilling, emotionally complex paranormal mystery. The little girls at the center of the story will touch your heart and unsettle you, all at the same time. A wonderful first novel from an exciting new voice in genre fiction."
-- Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of SNOWBLIND

"Love it, love it, LOVE IT!"
-- Rick Hautala, bestselling author of THE DEMON'S WIFE

"John McIlveen's HANNAHWHERE easily and often defies genre, weaving in mystery, darkness, humor and horror with a cast of living, breathing characters that it's far too easy to fall in love with. I am in awe of his talents."
-- James A. Moore, author of the SEVEN FORGES series.

HANNAHWHERE is a unique piece of fiction. Full of compelling characters and original concepts, it transcends any notions of genre. The reader’s need to encounter a beautifully realized story rendered in clear, precise prose is fulfilled here with stunning clarity. John McIlveen is a talent who has a brilliant future as a novelist.”

John McIlveen gets it. He gets that while wounds heal, they're scars forever, and sometimes, if the damage is deep enough, they always hurt. McIlveen's debut novel is a profoundly sensitive portrait of how traumatized children often need to exert control over some aspect of their own lives in order to cope with uncertainty and how bad life can get. But he understands that finding that measure of control doesn't necessarily fix anything in the long term. Coping is not the same as thriving. And coping mechanisms extended into adulthood can leave self-sufficient, seemingly well-adjusted adults feeling as scared and vulnerable as they have always been.

One can draw clear lines from Hannahwhere to Richard Matheson, Andrew Vachss, and Charles de Lint. But McIlveen has his own voice and style. It's not a crime novel, although there's crime at the heart of it. It is not a purely sentimental offering either, thought it has a ton of heart. While working in the neighborhood of "urban fantasy" he dispenses with magic and faerie and treats the subject matter with a sense of realism merely draped in fantasy. And he does all this wonderfully, without feeling like any of it is getting short shrift.

This is the real deal; a tremendously satisfying and well-realized first novel. John McIlveen gets it.

John McIlveen is a relatively new voice in horror, having appeared in a number of high profile anthologies over the last few years including Epitaphs, Borderlands 5, Eulogies II, and Of Devils and Deviants. October of 2014 saw publication of his first collection of short fiction, Inflictions from Macabre Ink, a division of Crossroad Press.

Hannahwhere is his first full-length novel and it was worth the wait. The twins, Hannah and Anna Amiel, were only seven-years-old when they witnessed the worst crime imaginable, right in their own home, in Elm Creek, Nebraska.

Two years later and fifteen-hundred miles away, Isaac Rawls, is making his rounds hauling trash in Riverside, Massachusetts, when he discovers a little girl, laying right by a dumpster. Lucky to be alive, it's days before she speaks her first words to Debbie Gillan, the caseworker assigned to look into her situation. It's not long before it's discovered the girl is Hannah.

Where has she been for the last two years? Why doesn't she look any older? What happened to her sister Anna? As Hannah's secrets are revealed, the reader is thrown into a mystical world where the impossible is proven to be reality.

Hannahwhere is a smooth blending of fantasy and horror filled with mystery and a number of surprises. John McIlveen proves to have a vivid imagination and tremendous story-telling skills. As if the tale of Hanna and her sister wasn't enough, there's also the history of the caseworker which is a gruesome tale in it's own right.

Also published by Macabre Ink, a division of Crossroad Press, Hannawhere is available now as an e-book from the usual online retailers.

I heartily recommend.

Hannahwhere was an outstanding, emotionally charged, fast paced book. I probably wouldn't have ever heard of this book if I hadn't met Mr. McIlveen in person at a New England horror book convention of sorts, but I'm very lucky that I did. This book was outstanding, and I'm from the city where the part of the book with Debbie takes place (Haverhill/Riverside). I can't recommend this book enough to people who like horror/suspense novels. Can't wait to see more from Mr. McIlveen!

Hannahwhere will drag you into a world of heart and soul, and yet, as a dark fantasy novel, the horror is there. The book pulls punches like a primed fighter, meshing fantasy well with the reality. Be prepare to fall in love with Hannah and wonder why we all don’t have a place like Hannahwhere to escape our troubles.

Just to be fully honest and fair, I published this book. As a publisher, though, with over 2300 titles out currently, there is no way to have personally read all of the books we've published. When i can, I catch up with our books in audio. I just finished listening to the audio edition of this book, and I am very, very happy that I did.

There are no punches pulled, and there are some dark things that happen... very dark... but the author clearly knows the subject matter, and handled the darkness in ways that, while not diminishing the darkness, also stop short of anything gratuitous. There are several story lines running at once, intertwining lives and traumas and loves...

This is the story of several young girls, several abusive men, caring women and art, secret places, and forgotten faces. It reminds me in spirit of Imajica by Clive Barker, or Weaveworld, but on a smaller scale - a more personal scale. This is a wonderful book, and I could not recommend it more highly.

Wow! Fabulous story. Great heart felt characters. Flowing prose, a pleasure to read. Paranormal horror in today's society, follows two young girls and their female caseworker into the darkest depths of man's inhumanity to man. With their demons nipping at theirs heels, these three robust and strong willed characters show what it means to stay strong. Fast paced and to the point. Highly recommended. This author is a force to be reckoned with!
Hannahwhere a place to escape and rebirth. On a personal note on the hardcover copy, I found well constructed work of art.

One of the hardest jobs one can have is working with damaged children. The job usually calls for one to be neutral and unattached and always impartial. Of course that is virtually impossible for most people. Debbie Gillian may be able to follow these rules for the most part but when she is introduced to Hannah, everything shifts. This is a story that is filled with horror, magic, discovery and finding where home is. The characters are beautifully written and developed. We aren't just searching for Hannah's story but for her sister as well and throughout we are learning just who Debbie is and how she got to this place in time. It is a wonderfully told story with just enough magic to make you believe that somehow, somewhere things do turn out alright in the end.

Hannah and Anna are 9 year old twins whose mother in an abusive relationship. Debbie is the DCF worker who becomes entwined in their lives.

That's the short version. What you really need to know is that with his first novel author John McIlveen takes his readers on an amazing ride that won't soon be forgotten. This reader got immersed in the lives of the characters and ached for their pain.

There are so many questions, so many possibilities raised. The power of the mind is at heart of this book. If you read only one book this year, make it HANNAHWHERE. I think it's that good.

Powerful, Wonderful, and a touch of spooky

An eerie and touching tale of loss and two souls finding each other. Vivid imagery and sharp characterization kept me immersed in the story of Hannah and Debbie and their journey. A fine read that had me reflecting on the perspective of how we view the improbable as well as the strength of spirit. Read it.

Incredible! It's the best word I can write. Anna and Hannah are twin sisters, raised in an extremely abusive home. Hannah is found, Anna is not. Along comes caseworker Debbie, who we soon learn as an extremely abusive past. How these three coped with the abuse is fascinating, and the rest of the book takes the reader on an amazing, thought-provoking journey into places our minds are not used to traveling. The story gave me exciting highs, and painful lows, and the emotional roller coaster is consuming. I had to put the book down several times as I found myself getting too involved and tense! Excellent read!

This book definitely wasn’t what I expected it to be, but it was rather interesting. More of a psychological read, or spiritual? Not sure if that’s the right word to use but…. anyway, I felt very connected to the characters. It was sad at some parts. But in the end it made me happy. I even teared up a bit. It would definitely make a great show. It was a very visual book.

HANNAHWHERE is a mystery, and it is a love story, and it is a complex horror story. There are some supernatural elements interwoven with very real physical and psychological terror that, in the hands of a less capable writer, could have become so entangled as to never reach a suitable conclusion. John McIlveen did not resort to any convenience of plot to overcome the entanglements but rather followed the convoluted path wherever it might lead while giving his reader a truly gut-wrenching ride. At times it was hard to turn the pages fast enough.

The way we look at the issue of child abuse, or for that matter any abuse, has changed, in my lifetime, from something never to be mentioned to being emblazoned on the front page of the newspaper, or blog, or TV news. I don't believe that this is due to an increase in this horrendous behavior, but rather due to an increase in the willingness to talk about it. Abuse is a fact of life with which we should all be uncomfortable, and, at the same time, something that must never be ignored.

Key to the telling of the tale is the sympathetic language used to describe horrors we would like to think are unimaginable. By sometimes talking around the barbaric acts, a clearer picture emerges, images we would rather never see. I never felt that this language was meant to diminish the savagery. In some ways, the careful choice of words made the violence that much more real.

For the most part, the presentation here is highly polished and readable. However, there are several streaks that mar the finish. Overall, they are mere blips that ultimately do nothing to diminish the story.

HANNAHWHERE is one of those books that it is difficult to say you enjoyed reading, yet it is not unique in this characteristic. There have been any number of books that I am glad that I read but feel that to say I enjoyed them would reflect badly on me. Sometimes it is enough to read and understand what the author is saying to make a novel a worthwhile read. HANNAHWHERE is a worthwhile read.

With skillful precision and emotional intensity John McIlveen builds a story in “HANNAHWHERE” that centers around a traumatized child named Hannah who’s found behind a dumpster. Unresponsive, starving and filthy, at the hospital Social Worker Debbie Gillian is called in to investigate a mystery that begins with the child’s identity, age, and family history only to discover a dark past, a twin sister, abuse and murder.

As Debbie grows close to the child and puts the pieces of her past together, she encounters not only an alternate world called “Hannahwhere” where time holds no meaning, Hannah’s twin sister Anna but also begins to have realistic nightmares about her own dark past.

In a paranormal story centered around abused and battered children as they try to cope with the horrors that have traumatized their lives, John McIlveen weaves a beautifully poignant and highly imaginative story that seems almost too real as two shattered lives find truth, love and healing. Intensity and suspense quickly build not only as they teleport to the mystical land but as Debbie begins to delve into Hannah’s past searching for Anna’s body. Mixing horror, mystery and murder with a large dose of the supernatural, the plot all too quickly progresses to a magical climax with a surprising twist at the end.

Included among the compelling characters bringing this story to life is Debbie Gillan a social worker haunted by nightmares of her childhood and a failed marriage. At work she’s smart, decisive, capable and caring masking the soul of a loner marred by pain, insecurity and a strong sense of worthlessness. Hannah Amiel-Janssen unlike her twin Anna who tended to be obedient and submissive is the beautiful, lost and captivating nine-year-old who hides a fiery, brave and stubborn will.

I thoroughly enjoyed “HANNAHWHERE”, a mesmerizing story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last.

John McIlveen offers a refreshing and unique world, Hannahwhere, to be explored by characters that will live in your heart forever. From the first page, you know that you’re in for an epic and long ride through the impossible. This book was unlike anything I’ve ever read before (and I do read a lot). I don’t know where to start because McIlveen pulls together so many beautiful aspects that make this story come to life.

The characters are riveting and intrigue you from the start. McIlveen masterfully unfolds their background stories through their own perspectives, allowing you to see everything - the whole, wide world - through the characters' eyes. His phenomenal world-building skills will place you in the center of this breathtaking universe. Hannahwhere is brilliant because it combines mystery, suspense, horror, beauty, love, and realism. The book also deals with several issues, including abuse. It’s dark and expertly crafted to where it strikes your emotional core deeply.

I was hooked from the first chapter and didn’t want to put it down. I needed to know what would happen next - and you will too! This is an incredible read! Faced paced, gripping plot, tons of mystery, and all written in a way that will suck you into Hannahwhere and pull you out of this world!

Hannahwhere is the debut novel by John M. McIlveen and it's a great way to start. The book blends different genres together, but at it's heart it's one of heck of a horror novel. There is plenty of mystery in here to, keeping you guessing on just how it'll all end and when it does, it's a great one. Highly recommended.

Wow what a book

The best book I have read in a long long time. Wow, the imagination John Mcllveen has is unbelievable. The descriptions of the characters is like you are right there with them experiencing the same things they are. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to escape for a while in never - never land.

Wow! Captivating from page one! At times I found myself speeding through the book, not able to stop my morbid curiosity. At other times, I found myself slowing down, not wanting the book to end. I was sure I knew what the ending would bring - but NO, NO, NO, I definitely did not anticipate what happened! Read this book - you will be thrilled you did!

When I started reading "Hannahwhere", I wasn't sure what to expect having heard that it covered a variety of genres. That summary is spot on, but this book is also gripping, intense, and affecting. I stayed up far too late reading it because I needed to know what was going to happen next. At one point, I had a strong feeling of what was going to happen and had to physically cover the next page so I wouldn't spoil it for myself because I wanted to wait to find out.

Excellent read that I strongly recommend. Also, I'm never going to sing Scarborough Faire the same way again.

This was an interesting book, but full of violence and sexual abuse that was at times very hard to take. Yet the magic of Hannah and Anna and their magical place to escape from the horriffic violence in their lives, makes this for a very strange journey. Parts of the book were enthralling, parts horrible, just not holding together although the trip was interesting and held me until the end.

Run of the mill Paranormal fantasy.

A decent but also predictable story about a girl who's discovered severeal years and hundred of miles from where she disapeared.

It's well written and mostly entertaining, there are however a problem with the violent and sexual abuse of children and the overly simple and easy way the victims overcome their trauma's.

Unique

Hannahwhere is a hard-to-define novel. Horror story, tale of finding one’s own strength and worth, with a hint of fantastical at the end. The male author does a good job portraying female protagonists.

The most original book I’ve read in a long time and a wonderful way to describe that place many of us go to when we just can’t seem to deal with what’s happening in real life. Beautifully written. I’m not sure I’d call it horror-more like thriller science fiction? McIlveen is a brilliantly innovative writer!
