Megan Swearingen’s life changes forever with the death of her father. Leaving college, she returns home to find her younger sister mute with shock, her mother too depressed to function, and their beloved Thoroughbred horse ranch on the verge of going under. She’s barely arrived when she’s forced to accept help from Brett Dawson—the man who once broke her heart—when a marauding mountain lion threatens one of the prized horses they depend on for survival.
Brett would rather be anywhere but the Swearingen ranch. Caught between his feelings for Megan and the powder keg of the ongoing feud between their families, he feels his only choice is to help Megan, regardless of the consequences. If it weren’t for Brett’s father, Megan’s dad might still be alive, and she wouldn’t be here now sacrificing her future to save her family’s ranch.
As the long-simmering attraction between Megan and Brett resurfaces, it is threatened almost before it begins by dark family secrets swirling around them—secrets that turn to danger and could very well destroy not only their new beginning, but the lives of everyone they both love.
When I open a book I make a commitment to finish it. I t was so difficult with this one. This author has unrealistic expectations of the reader. Not worth writing a review, do not waste your time like I did.
1.5 Stars The book bored me and I’ve got several books in this series on my Kindle. I admit I skimmed a bit. Per my status updated at 30% I don't know how I feel about this book. First it is very slow, yes still a bit interesting but still slow. Second (and most important) is the only 2 people not being held responsible for the "affair" are the 2 that HAD the affair. Not to mention his mother is still married to the man? Why is no one calling Megan's mother out on her behavior, not just the affair but her entire demeanor?
Brett’s father is a pig by the way and Brett really should have knocked his ass out at the rodeo. Megan’s mother is too self absorbed to even look outside the door “You will forgive me, I am your mother” is just over the top. Brett’s mother is a fragile piece of glass with no backbone and no self respect to stay with a drunk that is verbally abusive and a serial cheater...he flaunted a woman right in front of her.
Did they get the horses back that the father took?
OK, back to Megan and Brett. Brett’s fiancé died so he came back to the ranch to work, leaving his job as an attorney. Megan came home from college when her father died to run their family ranch. Lauren is Megan’s 10 year old sister and is not talking after finding her father dead but suddenly starts screaming when she see’s Brett’s POS father. Megan’s “I need to be in control and independent” just came off as immature ~ stomp my foot on the ground childish type. But she killed a mountain lion that was suddenly no big deal and swept away without another mention.
The book was “ok” which is my rating, ok. Nothing amazing, just ok. I have several of the books from this series on my Kindle and I will read the next one, cross my fingers it's better then OK.
Dawson vs. Swearingen Neighbors in a small community and yet neither family can forget the past. Is there a chance for them to move forward, to let the past stay there & for all of them to heal from the mistakes, for them to learn how to forgive & become stronger individuals?
Characters were easy to relate to, although the story took some time to get their past history. Easy to understand the anger between Brett & Meghan's families. Some of the story was repetitive when Brett or Meghan were thinking about reasons their friendship wouldn't work or their thoughts about feelings for each other. Several secrets throughout the story to keep the reader guessing, although I had figured some of them out before they were revealed.
This was a very good beginning to a new series. Set on horse ranches with lots and lots of family drama! The main characters, Brett & Megan, are young but both have gone through a lot and they struggle to connect and stay connected in the midst of even more. Very sweet romance and a few steamy sex scenes. Love the little sister and all of the animals too. Very good read!
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
This book is wonderful and full of emotions that have been around for years.
Brett and Megan's family have been friends and neighbors for years. They have both left their ranches for lives outside. They eventually end up back due to family issues. The ups and downs and all the secrets are very emotional. Even after they get together, their relationship is a rollercoaster ride. Love this emotion packed book.
And I would read another of her books, and recommend you do as well. A tough read. Lots going on here. Unforgiveness and/or anger will eat a person alive. Best to work through it and let go, not for the other person, or even to condone, but to set yourself free. Good book. Cute couple. Adorable little girl.
I love romance stories, but I love even more the romances than result following conflict. This book is filled with conflict and drama, but it's also filled with love, and it's love that triumphs over all. A wonderful book filled with well-defined characters that you can't help but love or hate.
The plot and story were great. It didn't grab me like some authors, but I held on because I really needed to see how it played out. The author brought out some tough relationships and handling of them.
This book had a very good plot and I couldn't put it down. The plot was ever changing and kept me guessing. Her book reminds me of Fern Michaels. Highly recommend
This starts out with a gloomy outlook, trying to save ranch after father's suicide. Things change rapidly. This begins as a clean story, with haunting facts. Then someone decided it needed to be spiced up. It ruined the read.
Long Road Home by Mary Jane Morgan Crystal Springs Homecoming Series Book One Megan Swearingen had to give up her life at college to come home to Crystal Springs, Tennessee. Her dad's sudden death has put the weight of saving the ranch on her shoulders. Her mother is lost in her own world and her little sister has stopped talking. As if that isn't enough—add a mountain lion, a pile of debt, and a few other things.
Brett Dawson's family and their neighbors are at odds but when a mountain lion is on the loose, he feels the need to help protect them. Even if he's unwelcome there. The more he gets to know Megan, the less he cares if he welcome or not.
These two families have some mighty big issues separating them but when the trouble heightens, the wall between Megan and Brett starts to crumble. Can there be any hope for friendship or more between the two of them? Or will the hatred and issues from their parents keep them apart? Such a good story. Full of twists and turns and more than a few surprises. **Sexual content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
