This graphic novel will appeal to all the ages. The title The Castle In The Stars, actually refers to the German "Neuschwanstein" castle in Bavaria. And this is where the true space race of 1869 takes place.
The secret lies in the Aether, a substance that is well known, but hard to come by. Seraphin's mother, a fearless entrepreneur, prepares for a hot air balloon ascend of the highest measure in history, in 1868. Unfortunately, things don't go so well, and her logbook was found a year later without her.
Seraphin and his father try to go about their business without mother until a mysterious letter arrives by mail. It is directing them to come to the Castle of the Swans in Bavaria if they want to have the logbook. But at the train station on the day they are about to leave, some secretive men try to intervene their departure and make them go to Berlin. Seraphin's father is quick to act, and they get away narrowly escaping the danger. The question is, why was someone trying to divert them? What is the importance of the logbook?

This novel is beautifully imagined with actual characters of history. King Ludwig, Sissi and other side kiks bring this era back in a charming yet futuristic way. The illustrations are beautiful, the adventure is engaging and the novel ends on a cliffhanger! How can you not want to read more. I have no idea how it will continue, but I am staying tuned for book 2 :)

I really enjoyed this story. There is a substance called Aether which can power ships like a modern ship. They are taking balloons into space basically. It's set in 1869. So, not based on any science. This is for the middle grade set. It takes place at the Bavarian castle in Germany. I enjoy how they bring elements together from the time to make this new story.
Great art. It has a very romantic style to it. A boy named Seraphin is at the heart of the story. His mother disappeared searching for Aether and now he is pulled into the nations race to get this substance.

Nice art, good adventure, interesting setting. The characters are a bit generic so far, but that may change as we spend more time with them. This is definitely a "beginning" book with the main adventure barely underway at the end.

Читаючи перший том я постійно ловив флешбеки з безтурботного дитинства, коли я зачитувався Жюлем Верном і його "20000 льє під водою" чи "П'ятнадцятирічним капітаном". Всі ті дитячі фантазії та уявлення Аліс переніс на папір, вражаючи читача масштабами та кольорами. Секрет успіху Зоряного замку автор розкриває в інтерв'ю Тома Анстона, яке слідує після мальованої історії. Не бачу сенсу переповідати його, прочитайте і все зрозумієте, твір сповнений графічних та візуальних алюзій.
Неможливо зростати на творах Жюля Верна, Хаяо Міядзакі, Ерже та Жака Тарді і не потрапити під їхній вплив. Алекс Аліс взяв все те що захоплювало нас в дитинстві, альтернативну історію, романтизм та магічний гуманізм і створив таку знайому, але водночас свіжу ретрофутуристичну історію, що магічним чином повертає читачів у дитинство незважаючи на те скільки їм років 7 чи 77.

Алекс Аліс — це французький сценарист і художник мальописів, який робить проєкти у Франції та іноді в США. Народився в 1974 році на півдні Франції й у дитинстві мав можливість подорожувати Європою. Так у нього на все життя виникла пристрасть до середньовічного та романтичного віків. Звісно, що це вплинуло на його творчість, починаючи з похмурого середньовічного езотеричного трилера «Третій Завіт», написаний у співавторстві з Ксав’єром Дорісоном, до первісного, міфічного світу «Зіґфріда», північну сагe про великого вбивцю драконів. Така доля, звісно, не оминула й банд десіне «Зоряний Замок», де він сприрається на творчість Жуля Верна, яку він просто обожнює ще з дитинства, та романтизм XIX століття, щоби створити приголомшливий акварельний світ пригод та чудес, і зачарувати, як дорослих, так і молодших читачів.
Розпочинається історія сценою, де молода дослідниця Клер Дюлак відправляється на повітряній кулі до стратосфери, щоб знайти нове джерело енергії, загадокового ефіру, який усі вважають вигадкою. Через поломку та неочікуванні обставини жінка зникає. А вдома залишилися її чоловік, геніальний інженер Арчибальд Дюлак, та їхній син на ім’я Серафін. Арчибальд вважає, що його дружина загинула і намагаєтсья змиритсия із цією втратою, але Серафін усім своїм нутром сподівається на її повернення. Через рік вони отримують дивний лист від невідомої особи, у якому зазначено, що Клер вела особистий щоденник усіх досліджень. Щоб дістати його, їх просять приїхати до баварського замку «Лебединий камінь», де вони дізнаються певні таємниці та познайомляться із мрійливим молодим королем, хлопцем-дослідником Гансом та його сетрою Софі. Від самого початку подій на них чатує усюди небезпека, дома, дорогою до замку та й у самому «Лебединому камені». Але чи зможе це зупинити, адже мрії осягнути космос можуть виявитися сильнішми за будь-які перешкоди.
Цей світ явно жив довгий час у голові Алекса Аліса, а дослідження різних періодів, які він проводив, відгукуються усюди: в історії, наукових теоріях XIX століття, одязі людей чи архітектурі. Тому світ відчувається повноцінним та реальним. Ось ця жага до дослідження сценариста і розвінчування міфів сконцентрувалися у головному герої мальопису Серафіні, який теж має люту цікавість до всього нового та невідомого. Один із прикладів, коли йому з батьком намагалися нашкодити грубі чоловіки, які розмовляли німецькою мовою, він без роздумів занурюється в праці про тодішню імперську Німеччину. Хоча батько наказав йому не гаяти час надарма та займатися математикою.
Після прочитання першого альбому вимальовуються три головні герої, Серафін, Ганс та Софі, які загалом потрапляють у досить звичні архетипи. Серафін — допитливий та мрійливий, Ганс — кмітливий та ризиковий, а Софі — чіпка та прагматична. Чим далі автор рухає історію, тим більше всі події обертаються навколо них, даючи нагоду одному із них керувати розповіддю. Коли потрібно розповісти про новий сюжетний елемент чи обговорити наукову теорію, головним стає Серафін. Якщо потрібен якийсь пристрій для подолання перешкоди чи випробувати щось нове й небезпечне, наперед висувається Ганс. А ось, коли потрібно з’єднати нитки історії чи охолодити запал хлопців, Софі тут, як тут. Ось ця зміна ролей виглядає дуже природньо й часто ти навіть не помічаєш цього.
Але вишенькою на торті для мене є тут, безумовно, чарівний та захоплюючий малюнок Алекса Аліса. Це, мабуть, головна причина, чому я придбав цей мальопис. Сторінка за сторінкою, його робота все більше захоплює дух. Адже художник відмінно розуміється, яку вагу має увага до середовища, яка насправді створює відповідну атмосферу та допомагає розповідати історію. Він дбає про увагу читача, щоб постійно було на думці, де ж відбуваються події. І це відображається не тільки в самому малюнку, але й інколи формі панелей. Його майстерність, як художника, можна побачити в деталях архітектури будинків, інтер’єру замку, інших будівель та конструкцій літальних апаратів. І кожен раз ти дивуєшся, що все це виконано аквареллю.
«Зоряний замок» — для мене подорож у невідоме, яка мотивує внутрішню цікавість до чогось нового, змушує мріяти про незвідані й чарівні світи та постійно торкається причин, чому людина віддає перевагу прагматичності чи амбітності у своїх вчинках. Також пригадався час, який я проводив у вигаданих фантастичних світах Жюля Верна. Ще відомо, що для створення цього банд дессіне Алекс Аліс надихався творчістю Хаяо Міядзакі та Ерже. Якщо з працями останнього я не знайомий, то паралелі з японським митцем можна намагатися відшуковувати, адже я подивився багато аніме, які він створив.
Думаю, що «Зоряний замок» — це мій мальопис, які перевершив усі сподівання, і у світі, і в малюнку, і в сюжеті. Чого вже так дріб’язково, у всьому. Цей той момент, коли я бажаю, щоб ви звернули увагу на це банд десіне, бо воно саправді вартує витрачених грошей. Я у завхаті! Але тепер тільки сумне очікування другого альбому…

Jules Verne meets Miyazaki, indeed. It's an incredibly apt description, one that I had in mind as I was reading it, before seeing the exact same thing on the blurb here at Goodreads. This is the first of three books, and it's a bit heavy on the exposition, a bit slow. But I found mix of aethernautics and espionage quite interesting enough to keep me reading, and the art is just gorgeous. King Ludwig (you know, the Mad, with the castles?) plays an important role, one that looks to be bigger in coming books, and I think Alice did a decent job with him, from what I've read. Empress Elisabeth also shows up, but I'm less certain about her characterization. A very nice steampunk comic.

¿Nunca ha tenido miedo a la oscuridad? ¿Temido la soledad? ¿El dolor? ¿El rechazo?¿ El fracaso? ¿La muerte? Verá, la verdad que nos enseñan los mitos no es que los dragones existan..sino que pueden ser vencidos. Enséñeme a un hombre que logró vencer sus miedos...y le enseñaré a un matador de dragones.
Este es el primer volumen del "Castillo de las estrellas". Una BD que tenía ganas de leer desde hace bastante tiempo. Fue una obra que me llamó desde un principio por su dibujo con acuarelas y los colores pastel.
Según me entere más adelante en una entrevista a Alex Alice, el autor, comentó que se había inspirado en el siglo XIX, concretamente en el romanticismo alemán para crear esta BD. Esto se ve reflejado sobre todo en los paisajes y en sus personajes, así como en las novelas de Julio Verne. Sin embargo, si nos fijamos también podemos entrever algunas referencias a las obras de Miyazaki o Hergé.
Terminado el primer tomo puedo decir que la obra de este autor me ha encantado. A decir verdad, si uno solo mira la portada, puede llegar a pensar que se trata de una obra destinada a los niños pero esto no es cierto, ya que puede ser leída tanto por adultos como por niños, su lenguaje no es difícil ni la trama difícil, se trata de una novela de aventuras sencilla y emocionante.

A steampunk, graphic novel? YES!! Well described as a cross between Japanese manga and Jules Verne, this book has been translated from French to English. At the heart of the story is the mysterious element of aether, which is thought to be usable to power ships for interplanetary travel. Young Seraphin and his engineer father are reeling from the loss of their intrepid mother/wife, whose aether experiment went too high in the atmosphere. They are invited to Germany to retrieve her journal, and then asked to assist in making a spaceship work. However, there are subversive elements in play. I think smaller pages would have improved the story, which seemed helter-skelter, but I liked the illustrations and look forward to the sequel being translated.

C'était génial ! Déjà les dessins sont très très beaux, j'aime beaucoup les personnages ! Et puis il y a de l'action, on est pris dans l'aventure, c'est vraiment une très bonne BD ! Vraiment j'ai passé un super moment, on ne s'ennuie pas une seconde, et il n'y a pas de sensation de trop peu comme ça peut parfois le faire... Vivement que je puisse emprunter la suite, mais j'envisage déjà d'acheter ces deux tomes parce que c'était top !

Sumptuous steampunk visuals, cinematic angles, gorgeous world building, and perfect tropes! How could I not adore a family-friendly, historically-rich graphic novel where King Ludwig of Bavaria says, “Fairy tales always tell the truth!”
This graphic novel works on several levels. My children enjoyed it for the adventure, I loved the alternate history. There are lots of historical Easter eggs that are not explained, which I loved. I laughed quite a bit over the bit where Empress Elisabeth of Austria confronts a corrupt minister with the words, “On my ninth birthday you even gave me my spanking!” (I’m guessing most English speaking readers will not be familiar with the European custom of a ritual spanking on one’s birthday 😂)
I sometimes feel a bit let down by steampunk, but not this time, and I’m excited to read the next instalment.
Go request these at your local library, *especially* if you have graphic-novel hungry kids, but even just for yourself.

Ідеальна мальована історія для тих, хто марив Жюль Верном і пригодами. Клер Дюлак відправляється на пошуки нерозвіданої енергії, яка уможливить політ на Марс, але не повертається. На її пошуки рушає Арчибальд Дюлак зі своїм сином Серафином, який і є таким собі зібраним образом мрійливого юнака з нашого дитинства. Однак тут є ще не така мрійлива юнка Софі, але теж сповнена юнацького максималізму й авантюризму. Події можна умовно поділити на дві частини: підготовка до Лебединого замку й пригоди в ньому. Усе це є лише початком, основою для подальших пригод, тому якщо ви хочете зануритись з головою у цей стімпанковий антураж -- доведеться ще почекати.
Робота є типовим прикладом банд десіне: деталізований акварельний малюнок, густро роздроблені панелями сторінки, не менш густі діалоги, а також дуже цілісне подання історії. Усе це добре тримається єдиного цілого, але якщо вам мало лише ностальгійного фльору, то швидко можете знудитесь. Утім, Алекс Аліс добре уміє підкидинути сюжетні повороти, розбавляючи розмови про наукові дослідження, пригоди й пошуки артефактів.
Усі хвалять малюнок, а мені місцями він видавався не дуже добре розробленим: помітно як грубо промальовані обличчя (які, звісно ж, Алекс Аліс не перемальовував), часто лінії від олівця грубо виходять за межі акварелі (чи то акварель не так акуратно була нашарована), а подекуди взагалі є проблеми з композицією і фізикою кадру. Якщо дивитись із більш дальньої точки, коли все пливе й переливається, то малюнок може видатись навіть геніальним. Якщо хочете побачити як справді можна володіти влучно аквареллю в реалістичному стилі, то пролистайте роботи Жібра.
Кому рекомендую? Звісно юним читачам і читачкам, які марять пригодами, польотами в космос і зниклими артефактами. Також тим, хто з певних причин це пропустив у дитинстві. Поціновувачам європейської школи теж можна звернути увагу й навіть спробувати зібрати усі томи, які видані чудово. Правда, трохи золота фарба злазить з палітурки, але нехай це буде елементом антуражу й атмосфери.
Робота є типовим прикладом банд десіне: деталізований акварельний малюнок, густро роздроблені панелями сторінки, не менш густі діалоги, а також дуже цілісне подання історії. Усе це добре тримається єдиного цілого, але якщо вам мало лише ностальгійного фльору, то швидко можете знудитесь. Утім, Алекс Аліс добре уміє підкидинути сюжетні повороти, розбавляючи розмови про наукові дослідження, пригоди й пошуки артефактів.
Усі хвалять малюнок, а мені місцями він видавався не дуже добре розробленим: помітно як грубо промальовані обличчя (які, звісно ж, Алекс Аліс не перемальовував), часто лінії від олівця грубо виходять за межі акварелі (чи то акварель не так акуратно була нашарована), а подекуди взагалі є проблеми з композицією і фізикою кадру. Якщо дивитись із більш дальньої точки, коли все пливе й переливається, то малюнок може видатись навіть геніальним. Якщо хочете побачити як справді можна володіти влучно аквареллю в реалістичному стилі, то пролистайте роботи Жібра.
Кому рекомендую? Звісно юним читачам і читачкам, які марять пригодами, польотами в космос і зниклими артефактами. Також тим, хто з певних причин це пропустив у дитинстві. Поціновувачам європейської школи теж можна звернути увагу й навіть спробувати зібрати усі томи, які видані чудово. Un cómic recomendable sobre todo para chic@s de 10-15 años que no hayan tenido demasiado contacto previo con el steampunk.
Guion: Lleno de tópicos del steampunk y la ciencia ficción de aventuras, muy al estilo de Julio Verne; pero funciona: aunque no sea innovador, resulta agradable e interesante. Cierto intento de reducir el sexismo sin traicionar la época. Las escenas de acción tienen dinamismo. SPOILER: Las escenas con el rey Ludwig y la trama del espía son más flojas.
Diálogos: Lo esperable en un cómic de aventuras. Funcionales sin ser del todo cliché.
Dibujo: En color y bastante buenos. Hay cierto detalle en las construcciones, buena composición de viñetas, paisajes impactantes y coloreado vívido. Claras influencias del manga, el anime de Ghibli y el cómic francés. Algunas caras y construcciones podrían estar más trabajadas. Las mujeres me resultan demasiado similares entre sí.

Wow, this was fantastic.
I saw this beautiful Graphic Novel last year for the first time and fell immediately in love with the stunning artwork.. Now a few month later I finally own this beauty and am still in love. The story is unique and fun , it`s a bit funny that its set in german areas.. I like the characters and the idea of emperor Ludwid II having a Steampunk like flying machine to find the aether..

While I wish that I had discovered this series sooner than I have I am so glad that I have read this book now.
The amazing art is bright and colorful while complimenting an old story with a new twist that has an amazing look as well as some beautiful characters.
I never thought I would find the "Knights of Aether " so completely satisfying in this first book. An amazing read.

Estamos en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, en una época con continuos avances científicos y tecnológicos. Bajo este entorno se sitúa esta historia de aventuras a lo Verne y a lo Miyazaki, una ucronía-retrofuturista-steampunk.
El protagonista es Séraphin, un joven con padre científico y madre aventurera, pionera de la astronáutica. Tras la tragedia acontecida a su madre mientras iba en busca del éter, padre e hijo se verán envueltos en una carrera por hacerse con la primera aeronave impulsada con éter.
Muy buena primera parte, de dos, con Alex Alice al guión y al dibujo, un dibujo espectacular en acuarela.

Un très bel album tout en aquarelle !
Une intrigue digne de Jules Vernes, un destin tragique, du suspense, une belle amitié, un roi (maudit?) une belle princesse et surtout une quête ... de l'impossible ?? C'est ce que l'on va chercher à apprendre.
Le scénario est à la hauteur des dessins. Un petit plaisir qui plaira aux jeunes comme aux grands.

I saw this graphic novel at our library and it immediately grabbed my attention. This was a very well done graphic novel and is appropriate for middle grade and older readers.
The artwork is done in a watercolor style and is absolutely amazing; incredibly detailed and easy to follow.
This is a steampunk story full of adventure and intrigue. The story is exciting, magical, and has great characters throughout.
Overall I enjoyed this book a lot and plan on continuing with the series. My 11 year old son also really enjoyed this book. I am exciting to see what book 2, The Moon King, is like when it releases in September.

El otoño pasado decidí que era hora de empezar a leer cómics con un temática retrofuturista y entonces fui al FNAC de la plaza Callao en Madrid para pedir consejos sobre una primera compra. Le Château des étoiles 1869: La Conquête de l'espace- Vol. 1 era el único volumen en la tienda que entraba en los parámetros del steampunk y lo compré sin pensar dos veces.
Enseguida me cautivó la estética de las maravillosas ilustraciones de Alex Alice y Anthony Simon; casi cada página invita la admiración por su layout. La historia es una clásica aventura, muy en la línea de una novela victoriana, y recuerda mucho a la literatura de Julio Verne.
Hay seis volúmenes de esta colección y no pienso perder ni uno de ellos.
Enseguida me cautivó la estética de las maravillosas ilustraciones de Alex Alice y Anthony Simon; casi cada página invita la admiración por su layout. La historia es una clásica aventura, muy en la línea de una novela victoriana, y recuerda mucho a la literatura de Julio Verne.
Hay seis volúmenes de esta colección y no pienso perder ni uno de ellos.

Exceptional craftsmanship. Artwork so detailed and inviting that I probably hurt my eyes reading too close to the page. The plot never dragged, but also never felt like it was rushing to an inevitable conclusion. Reminded me perhaps of Dinotopia, in terms of scope and detail, but with more adventure and thrills. Characters were all rather one-dimensional in the manner of your favorite childhood Disney movie - nothing to complain about there. Cliffhanger ending because in France they don't bother packing the entire adventure into one collection. Oh well! I'm excited to re-read this book when book two comes out.

C'est beau, ça fait rêver, les personnages sont évidement des enfants, le dessin a l'aquarelle donne une incroyable légereté à l'ensemble, on y croise Louis II de Bavière et Sissi, c'est d'une beauté à couper le souffle, on y quête l'éther, et c'est tout simplement beau.
Est-ce que j'ai dit que c'était splendidement dessiné et mis en couleur ?
Et que c'était exactement ce que doit être la bande dessinée ?

Seraphin’s mother was lost after such a quest. Now Seraphin and his father are invited to build a gigantic balloon vessel to continue her search. Told in beautiful watercolor images with fine details and nods to Japanese manga, this large graphic novel invites readers into a new world. With a dynamic mix of historical detail, science and steampunk, this graphic novel is exceptional.
