Not Even a Fly by Phoenix Alexander ★★★★☆
“I just leave my body for a bit. I saw you do it, too, last night.” As best I could, I reverted my expression to neutrality.”

This was proper good vicious fun. Two potential serial killers meet while camping and find they have the same coping skills. Skills that eventually fail one of them.

The Red Veil by Daniel Roop ★★★☆☆
“Whatever had reshaped him into some eldritch science project, whatever else he was by then, he was still meat.”

I understood the Supernatural vibe they were going for, but time jumps are hard on a short story. Linear would have worked better.

Useless Heart/Stopped Cold by Artemis Chen ★★★☆☆
“You look into heart donation, but it makes you queasy, taking on another person’s heart, their longings, memories, nightmares.”

Very artsy story about the emotional damage of divorce on a child.

I read all three fictional stories that averaged 3.33 stars. The non fiction diner article was fun too.

I liked this issue!

The Red Veil by Daniel Roop: 4/5

About a veteran who crashes at a fellow vet's home who initiates him into his extraordinary family tradition. This was a good story! Well written and composed, there was just a je-ne-sais-quoi that stopped it from being a five star read

Useless Heart / Stopped Cold by A. Artemis Chen 5/5

Flash Fiction about a heart stopped cold in childhood. Resonated with me.

Not Even a Fly by Phoenix Alexander

My personal highlight of the issue, about a man who has his own methods of dealing with murderous thoughts. Alexander was interviewed in the Author Spotlight and said he thought this story was King-esque but scared of "flattering himself too much" which is not a worry I think he should have! It was King-esque and it was glorious. I am excited to read more by this writer.

Sweet Certainty by Deborah L. Davitt 4/5

A lycanthropic poem. I liked how easy it was to get immersed into the poem, even as a ESL speaker who sometimes struggles with poetry.
