Allison Lopez is not your everyday Psychic Hotline operator. She's a real psychic with real abilities that seem to grow daily, thanks to her close association with an immortal friend. Now, as her abilities continue to grow, Allison receives a call on the Psychic Hotline from Marisa, who says someone named The Huntsman is after her, Allison uses her skills of remote viewing to see that her caller is surrounded by snow. That is, until the line goes dead and so does their psychic link.
On a hunch—and after getting suspended from work—Allison heads to the only ski lodge open in the summer, La Chasse Resort in Oregon to search for the mysterious caller. Once there, Allison gets a job as a server in the resort’s restaurant and uncovers more of the mystery. But to track down Marisa, Allison must use her supernatural talents and that of a triad of witches she’s connected to—but now someone is tracking her too. To complicate matters, Allison may have just found her dream guy.
Has a powerful evil taken over the resort? When another employee disappears, it will take the power of three to fight it. Or will Allison also fall prey to the legendary Huntsman?
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
The Witch and the Huntsman Mix one wicked sorceress who bathes in the blood of young women to stay young, a ski-lodge full of cannibals, and a triad of soul-mate witches (not all of whom are actually alive), with a twisty plot in a Stephen King-esq winter hotel, and you have J.R. Rain’s The Witch and the Huntsman. The third in the author’s Witch Series, the book is a fun Saturday morning read. Told in the first-person voice of the series’ protagonist, Allison Lopez, the story follows Allison from her job at a psychic hot-line to a creepy hotel in the mountains of Oregon. But Allison actually is a psychic—and a witch—and friend and food source to a vampire. Like the other two books in the series, this one follows a typical plot formula—but this does not feel formulaic or contrived. All things considered, I recommend the book and the series – it has not fulfilled my wish for another Sookie Stackhouse book (the characters are not as well-developed, and the author does not do his female characters as well as he could), but I did find the books a really entertaining read.
I loved the 2 previous books, couldn't wait until this one was released but, unfortunately, this book feels like it was written by completely different authors than the first two. It lacked every single element that made the others so good. Literally every element. There was insta true love, scenes were rushed, the spooky had a chance at being truly terrifying but were rushed and not written out, scenes that could have been so good were barely written. Even the main characters didn't seem to have their personalities from the last book. Truly a disappointment and the book was over at 89% just to add insult to injury! This felt like a rush job, or a novella instead of an addition to the series. This series is over for me as of this book, it was that bad. First book I will return for a refund.
This was a fun read, completely improbable, exciting action, and too short. This series doesn't flesh out the plot enough to really immerse the reader, but keeps you interested so you want to finish. I consider them long stories, not quite full enough to be a real novel. There is much potential There! That said if you're looking for a quick, fun read, this will fill a few hours.
This is a REALLY generous 4 star. These are like cozies - just fun, mindless reads so I don't expect much. But, the author goes beyond tropes to parts-of-plots you've seen at least a few times (perhaps few dozen times) before. (I've been wondering if she watches something like Once Upon a Time and thinks, "I could use this bit or that bit"). But her main character and background is a bit different even if you've seen the secondary characters and situations in many other venues.
This is a spin-off series from the Samantha Moon Vampire for Hire series. The tone is a little sadder than the parent series, but the writing style is similar and the characters and plots are all very interesting. There don't seem to be any happy endings in this series, but no tear-jerkers either, just a little bit of nail-biting. This 3rd book is about magic gone bad in a ski resort. I was bummed that the heroine didn't get to be with her love interest for very long. I hope the author eventually lets her have a real relationship.
This may have been my least favorite of the three so far, but I still enjoyed it. I felt a little like Allison feels a bit too helpless without Ivy and Millicent even though she isn't. The love story with her and Eric was cute, but you could feel what was going to happen in the end coming from very early on. I do enjoy that Millicent is becoming more "real." I think the series will get better again but this one was a little so-so coming from the two authors who've done such great work together with all these characters. I'll keep reading because I'm confident they'll keep getting better.
The audiobook for this one was terrible. Constant splicing and shifts in audio quality. It felt very very homemade.
and the voice used for Millicent was shifted and I loathed the sound. Every time she had to speak the scene could not be over fast enough. Her personality also shifted into just a whiny nag.
If I hadn’t of pre purchased the next book, this is where I would be quitting Allison’s story. She’s great in vampire for hire but these books are turning into duds.
What a great story! I have met Allison before in the Sam Moon books and feel comfortable with this character. Her unique abilities are also familiar and I do love her with and humor. This story could have gone many different ways, but I'm glad to see how Allison persevered. I look forward to the next installment.
As a lifelong Oregonian it was fun to read about my home state. I was confused by the mention of Mt Hood and Mt Jefferson. Was the hotel Timberline, if so it's on Mt Hood. I am not sure this was an error or creative license. Mt Jefferson was mentioned a couple times. Both beautiful mountains.
Allison's witch triad comes together more fully than the previous books. Bringing the power of three more personally than before. Also explaining their unique bond and gifts each of them brings to their tight little group.
I know this is supposed to be a fantasy series where anything can happen, and usually does. Bit being a witch, myself, I guess I just expect the stories to be a little more true to life. Just a little more. ;)
I have read 20 plus books of JR Rain, really like them a lot! This one, not so much at least the first 2/3 of the book. I was ready to give it a 1 star. Then the story line I expected kicked in.
This is turning out to a great series I have just read three books back to back the storylines are gripping and the characters are all people you care about , just watch what you eat I highly recommend this series a well deserved 5 stars
The messes she gets herself into are always interesting and fun to read. This one brings in some ancient history and folklore for excitement, and it works!
Bravo! A good fast read! now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
This third installment of the Witch series was a fun, easy read, but even though it was a quick book, it was filled with excitement and thrills. The authors did a wonderful job of filling this little book with all you would want in a story- romance, mystery, murder, thrills, horror, witchcraft, some humor and a little girl time (though I think the guys would like this one too), all with a touch of a fairy tale feel throughout. Even though I haven’t read the second book, I didn’t feel lost in this one, so you could pick this one up as a standalone and be just fine with the action and characters.
This book brings Allison to a mountain ski lodge that’s run by a creepy woman and her stepson, along with an equally creepy dining room manager. Women are disappearing and Allison wants to find out why. Along with her fellow witches, Ivy and Millicent, the three of them are ready to face a dark evil set on destroying their witch trio. The action starts from page one and goes until the final page. This is one of my favorites from these two authors for sure.
I’ve been reading the series back-to-back and am surprised that this third book wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as the first two. There is just too much missing. This is a highly emotional story for Allison and yet as a reader I felt none of it. So how am I to be on board with the seriousness of what she’s feeling? That end just fell flat.
Too much was left unexplained when it came to the reveal of what they were facing and what exactly happened. Very rushed, and it feels like a cop out for us to be missing out on their explanation to the police without any evidence, especially since one of the dead is an officer. That’s huge!
Allison picks up a human as a familiar when the guy begs her to take him on. It doesn’t make sense that a response of “OK” would be enough to create the relationship.
The situations are definitely interesting but there is just too much lacking—more than I mentioned here—for even fiction to be believable.
I love when a character from one series makes a crossover into their own. I first met Allison Lopez in the series Vampire for Hire by JR Rain. She is a friend of Samantha Moon and I loved her from the start! She is witty, fun, a psychic and a witch whose powers are getting stronger every day! In The Witch and the Huntsman, Allison receives a strange phone call and that is where the story takes off! Full of action, love, friendship, deceit and trust, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end, which for me came all to quickly! If you are a fan of Samantha Moon you will love this series as well. Sam even stops in every once in a while which to me is a bonus! I definitely recommend this book and series to all who love paranormal stories!
Sucked in to going to Oregon from a call on the psychic hotline, the three witches meet to rid the world of nasty enemy that had been following them for ages. This 3rd book in the series can stand alone as Allison, Ivy, and Millicent firm up their partnership. Story is framed in the Mt Hood forest with tales of Bros. Grimm adding to the fantasy and is well-written with well-developed characterization. Adult reader only due to violence and sexual fantasy.
This book goes a little deeper into the triad of witches. It has some scary people who eat "long pig". Eeww! Allison goes in search of a client who has disappeared, and finds herself in trouble, love, and weirdly employed. But her sister witches, Millicent and Ivy come to her aid. The characters evolve much more in this book, so I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I read this book in one sitting.
Allison, witch, friend, sister and lover. Being a witch is a big help seeing she works for the psychic hotline. Helping people with their "ghostly, demonic" problems keeps her busy. But she has help, as in Millicent, the ghostly sister and Ivy, the actress/witch. They make up the triad and use their powers to kick demonic butt. Great story, great characters. Laugh out loud funny. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Started with the first eight Vampire for hire box set plus one novella and haven't been able to stop there. Each book leaves me wanting more... every series is worth adding to your library. It's easy to become invested in the characters as they evolve into their own mysteriously intriguing lives.
Whoa, where do i even start. I think this story will stay with me for a while. Allison was bad ass. I truly want to go on and on about this story but i don't want to rob anyone else of the experience.
I gave this book a 5 because it keeps you on the edge of your seat and you want to keep reading , I never put it down , it was excellent and I can't wait till the 4th one comes out
