Series for primary-aged readers, Olympics with robots and conspiracies.

My first in this series, I received copies as winner of a competition and thought I'd read them before sharing with my 7-year-old.

Set out in space, Jake has been awarded tickets to the Robot Games, the Olympics for mechanoids and their creators, with his friends. His cyborg friend seems to become obsessed with a confectionary product (the really awfully named 'Gob Pops'), and malfunctions repeatedly. And then something very worrying occurs as the Games close, and Jake and his crew find they are in a position to try and do something about it...

This reminded me of Beast Quest and other such series, with fairly anodyne characters, a formulaic plot lots of exposition, lots of boy-friendly features to appeal to the market.

I'm pretty sure it will have great appeal to the target audience. A hero who cares about his friends, who figures out there is something untoward going on. A slightly eccentric cyborg, a space setting.

It's a good example of a series for primary readers who have gained independence in reading but seek the familiar and comfortable, an important stage.

Recommended for ages 7-10.

Jake and his friends Skye, Rory and Milly are excited about going to the Robot Games. It’s the best reward for winning the Rocket Battles space car race. Their cyborg friend Henry joined them and he was acting even stranger than usual popping Gob Pop in his mouth. He’d just had an upgrade and when he ate too much Gob Pop his cheeks puffed out like balloons then he shut down. Henry was spoiling their day but Jake needed to help his friend. They had to take him to the medical centre but he was too heavy to lift. The cleaner helped with his flying robotic cleaning machine.

Things started to get weird and the kids decided to find out what was going on after being shut out of the medical centre. The doctor and nurse at the medical centre acted weird too. What were they doing to Henry? Was it his upgrade? How could they rescue their friend and save the people being locked in the arena? Would the Robots take over?

Action packed from the first sentence, Candice has written another page-turning thriller for young readers.
